As an architect, I was most excited to visit one of Le Corbusier's most famous works. The chapel itself is an interplay of exuberant, sculptural form with shadow and light. It stands on top of a mountain confidently overlooking the valley below. 5 out of 5 stars for the chapel. However, this review is for my experience at Notre Dame du Haut.
The staff at Notre Dame du Haut represents the WORST of the stereotypes of French hospitality. They were EXTREMELY RUDE, CONDESCENDING, and OBNOXIOUS. During my two week visit to France, this was the most TERRIBLE and UNPROFESSIONAL customer service I experienced, hands down, by far. We arrived approximately 40 minutes before the chapel was to close for the day to visitors, and the clerk behind the front desk didn't want to sell us a ticket because they were "closing soon". It's not a huge building or site - you can easily see everything in under half an hour (we got through in about 25 minutes, and we didn't particularly hurry). After some cajoling, she relented and sold us the tickets. However, at that point we were shadowed CONTINUOUSLY by another staff member during our visit, who constantly reminded us how long until closing, made snide comments at us (yeah, we understand French so you weren't so sneaky!), and also seemed to enjoy intentionally getting in the way of our photographs. It was an extremely uncomfortable experience having this woman follow us around the ENTIRE building and site, and INTENTIONALLY trying to make our experience as unpleasant as we could. All in all, it was a HORRIBLE visitor's experience and left a very bad taste in my mouth. As beautiful of a chapel as it is, if we knew that we would be treated like this we would have skipped it.
