Admission is also free but donations are accepted. I didn't realize until I visited that the museum is located on land that was once the home to Cherokee Indians who were forced to leave in 1830 by the Indian Removal Act. Many ended up in Cherokee NC as they escaped by the Trail of Tears. I like that the museum is trying to reserve history. The museum wasn't large although I think I missed the permanent collection and just saw the current exhibition which was great. I enjoyed seeing the work differently looking at it from different angles. I wish I was given more guidance if more work was on the second floor. But I can check it out next time. The work presented does focus on the big issues like climate change; social justice; women's rights; and immigration. So if these types of issues are important to you, I think you will enjoy the art created by these artists.

We were greeted at the entrance and they explained about standing 3 feet back from the art on the wall. I was given a sheet of paper explaining what exhibits were on each level. The works of art were displayed nicely with cards listening Artist, title and mediums used. Also on the walls were interesting facts about the featured artist and their works. The Andrew Wyeth pictures were a beautiful representation of his work spanning several decades of his life. There was also a wonderful exhibit of American artist Bob Ray's work. I was not familiar with his work but it was lovely and intriguing. There are elevators and stairs and ramps making transitions to each floor very easy for all. We went to the top floor and a wonderful gentleman who works there, John , told us quite a bit about the mixed media bird sculptures that were made by Grainger McKoy and and featured at the museum. Gravity defying and extremely detailed we were in awe. John was enthusiastic and knowledgeable and we had a wonderful time. There was a delightful group of young children on a school trip, that were at the museum and were incredibly well behaved. They were listening to their guide and I was smiling as they were told to discuss with their partners different aspects of the works..... their sweet voices sounded like music as I was behind a wall. The gift shop was small but lovely and I bought some cards and beautiful paper masks. There is no admission fee, so we took an envelope to send in well deserved donation.

We went through the exhibit and got to see some really incredible displays. We marveled at the displays, wondering how long they took to complete, how many people worked on the display etc. It's just so amazing to see that all the displays were made out of Lego pieces. There were some interactive displays which was nice for the kids since they were unable to touch most of the displays in the exhibit. There's a section where the kids can be master builders and time themselves on how quickly they can complete a miniature display, they ranged from easy, medium and difficult. At the end of the experience there was an entire city made of Legos, with loose lego pieces for the kids to be creative and make their own lego creations. It was a great finish to the experience. This exhibit is every lego master builders dream. It brought me back to my childhood!

We visited at around 10:30 and were super disappointed. It was only two rooms open and it was super cramped. One of the machines were broken and the employees were feeding the animals (the ones you could see). If you have a younger child this may be a little bit better. The microscope machine was also broken. I guess you get what you pay for since it's only $5. Also, one of the rooms was closed for summer camp and wasn't open until 12. This wasn't advertised anywhere.

It isn't a huge museum but there was a wide variety of art to be inspired by. Contemporary, impressionism, sculpture and so much more. There is also a wonderful area just for young people to make their own art, relax, read and play!! More museums need spaces like this! I was especially impressed with the gallery showing art made by the local high schools and middle schools.
