I came here for an MRI referred by a German doctor in the area. That was ten hours ago, and they have left a line in my vein that is very irritated and painful after hours of having it there for no reason. When I mentioned that this amount of pain is not normal, they told me that they cannot look at it/possibly replace it because it would be a waste of materials. I would non be surprised if I was here for more than 12 hours, and I anticipate leaving the hospital way sicker than I was when I arrived (and I arrived with a concussion...) I would give this place 0 stars if I could. read more

I came to the Charite Campus Mitte after an unsatisfactory diagnosis of my extremely painful lumbar region in another hospital. Prof.Dr Peter Vajkoczy,medical director of neurosurgery, studied my previous MRT and then ordered a battery of tests - a new MRT, a CT and a device recording nerve responses to electrical impulses. Dr Vajkoczy's suspicion was confirmed. My pain was being caused by a pinched nerve in S1, a different segment than previously diagnosed. Prior to my minimally invasive operation I was given intensive care by a most capable staff. The operation itself was so successful that the excruciating pain had vanished as soon as I regained consciousness. Such an awful hospital experience. Waited 8 hours only to be told the doctor would not be ready for a while longer. Which I was there because I was literally choking on a piece of food. Awful place all around. Go literally anywhere else. read more

My experience with the Charité Mitte has been really awesome. I have doctors there that are the most caring people you will ever meet. I have a chronic condition so I know the place probably better than most people. If you don't speak very good german, they will get the doctor that speaks your language (better luck with english or turkish). In rare cases, someone will translate for you. There were some rather expensive procedures that my (public) insurance would not cover and my doctor helped me fight to get them to pay for it. FIGHT. I've also had doctors give me hugs and share tears with me. They're humans here! (At least the ones I see anyway) Some doctors I also see privately there and it's not so expensive. I would say a downside is that the hospital is so huge that the departments appear not to talk to each other. Also, some of the registration processes can be confusing. For this I would give the place 4.5 /5 stars if I could. Another downside is the construction (as of Spring 2015). The tall bed tower and much of the campus is under much needed construction. This leads to a crowded alternative bed house and the chance of being *able* to pay for a single room (not expensive at 60 or so Euros) is slim. Double or Triple rooms are the norm with some people being in rooms with what looks like 4 people. As for hospital food: breakfast and lunch are only ok. For dinner, you're better off having a friend bring you food. Apparently this varies by ward. I can only speak for the orthopedic and women's health ward. As for the emergency room - I've only been there a few times and I've never had to wait more than 20 minutes to see someone. Maybe I am lucky - I hear of other people waiting for hours. read more

It's very difficult indeed to write about a hospital which you've had more than one type of experience with. I think Charité Mitte has an excellent reputation but tends to sort of ride on the coattails of that... that said, I have been seen at A&E a few times and the wait times have, both times, been about 4 hours. I have an Neurologist (Oberärztin) in the Ambulatory area there who is absolutely the most caring, thoughtful, personable person. She's extremely busy but she takes the time that makes the difference. To me, she is exactly the type of doctor Charité needs more of. read more

Beware non German and non eu citizens. Check your options and talk to your insurance prior to paying charite for anything. Best to ask someone else as the people from charite administration are useless and I could say malicious to a certain extent. Medical staff is excellent and treatment was performed lege artis. The elderly German nurses are rude and not helpful at all. Witnessed one of the nurses treat an elderly patient horribly because he soiled his bed. Poor guy could not move. She was not far from his age so I would have expected more compassion. The immigrant nurses are a completely different story, polite and helpful. My 2 stars go only because of the medical staff. Wow this place is horrible if you have an emergency. Came here with a horrible and terrifying eye infection. I'm a non-EU/German resident and citizen so obviously I'm paying out of pocket. They initially treated me like royalty because I was paying an incredible amount to be treated and gave me a room before like 70 people. Then after 3 hours of waiting in this room and talking to a nurse sometimes I eventually go out and everyone is gone but like 2 doctors and a nurse. They had forgotten I was in there!!!????? They came up with some excuse about how my problem wasn't serious but then said bacteria was consuming my eye and had to put drops in every hour. So that didn't make sense. The augen center also didn't dilate my eyes, check my vision or anything. They just examined me under the light and prescribed me drops. The doctor was probably 4 years older than me. When I went home and saw the doctor at the Stanford Eye Center she said it wasn't eye eating.. just a simple infection and questioned their medical practices. I could have enjoyed much more of Berlin if not kept in the jail which was this hospital which gave me nothing but a weird diagnosis and a prescription. Beware non-citizens. Extreme emergencies only. Charité has indeed an excellent reputation in Berlin and visiting it was an opportunity to evaluate it. I visited Charité about an emergency related with my girlfriend. We waited for more than 1.5 hours, which based on other European cities we have visited is the average waiting time. It can be considered clean as a facility and people tend to help you when you ask for directions and additional information. Disliked the fact that we had difficulties with the low usage of English language of the lady at the phone call we had before going to Charité. read more

Good afternoon, I would like to leave a review for dr. Kerschbaum. I have been directed to him when I came to charite. The case was not an emergency one apparently, and Mr. Kerschbaum did not have the courtesy to talk calmly to me andexplain how things are, instead he started to higher his voice at me stating that this was the wrong place to come and that he will only perform the surgery when I have a serious infection with pus and everything. Besides this, he said that my general doctor was wrong with his diagnosys ( which I consider completely unethic), but kept on sending me back to him. To sum things up- rude and unprofessional, not the level one would expect from Charite and from the amount of money one pays every month for the health insurance in Germany. read more

Aside from arguably being Europe's biggest university hospital, the large area in which the Charité is situated, and the adjacent biology institutes of the Humboldt and Freie universities, are studded with dozens of gorgeous, mostly red-brick buildings from the 18th and 19 century, resembling some USA Ivy League universities. Any person even mildly interested in seeing beautiful architecture must visit this hidden gem at the heart of Berlin. The Luisenstraße vertically separates the historic Charité Campus (west of Luisenstraße) and the biology institutes (east of Luisenstraße). The buildings on the Charité campus are bigger, brighter and more impressive. The buildings of the biology institutes are smaller and darker. Enormous trees and lavish grass lawns dot the spaces between the biology institutes, giving the area a forest feeling. In the summer hundreds of students perpetually frequent the grass lawns. The entire area, bordered on the east by Friedrichstraße, to the north by Hannoversche Straße, and to the south by Schumannstraße, invites for a relaxing walk. The Charité Tower, the main, modern (and the only ugly) building of the hospital is located at the north of Luisenstraße. It is always open to the public and it offers toilets, vending machines and other conviniences. The westernmost street of the historic Charité Campus is Virchowweg. At the north of the street is the Museum of the History of Medicine, elsewhere reviewed in Qype. Near the museum you get a nice view of the river and the Hauptbahnhof (central train station). 100 metres south of the museum is the only modern building on campus. The unmistakable pink building was built around the year 2000 and hosts two biological research institutes: the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology and the DRFZ, the German Research Center for Rheumatology. This building might feel a bit out of place on the historic campus, but its modern architecture is definitely interesting. read more

THE ABSOLUTE WORST HOSPITAL I'VE EVER BEEN IN MY WHOLE LIFE. As a tourist, I went to the emergency area, hoping to get my injured leg checked as I was about to run the Berlin marathon in a few days. I had to wait 3 hours to get seen by a doctor who only looked and not even touched my legs. I said I wanted to get an MRI so I'll know what exactly my injury is (stress fracture or tendinitis or shin splints) but he said it takes 3 months in Germany to make a booking. Basically all I got was a google answer of doing the RICE method. All the staff were unsympathetic, cold and just generally had this "I don't care" attitude. Unless you're literally dying in front of their eyes, they are not going to entertain you with urgency. Expect to spend the whole day here if ever you're visiting. I cannot believe this is supposed to be one of the best hospitals in Berlin. When I was about to leave, I got to talk with one of the locals and she said that that waiting time is normal and in fact even considered fast. Likewise, my Uber driver told me there aren't enough doctors in Germany in general so maybe that's the reason why patients have to wait so long. read more

We went to the hospital because our child had ear problems, and we were there for about one and a half hour. When we wanted to pay for the parking ticket, the machine only took cash and not Visa card. We didn't have any cash because we just arrived to Berlin same day from Denmark. The parking guards didn't want to help us and wouldn't open the gate for us. They said we need to get cash somewhere and were not helpful at all. We were stuck at the hospital with a tired child. Very bad service for turist. We will never come here again. read more

I have had only 3 experiences in this hospital. 2 were in the accompaniment of a German friend. And the latest alone. The latter by far is as of now the most horrible experience I have ever had anywhere. This hippie long haired intake nurse, was literally the most unprofessional, insensitive, disrespectful and down right aggressive person I have ever come in contact with at a hospital. 2 days ago-I do not give this so called "Hospital" a star as there is not a zero as an option. Personnel's, nurses and doctor are the rudest people in Europe. They watched too many documentaries of WWII. This " Charite dump consortion" could take lessons of German cars salesmen to improve their image and public relations between patients and "professionals. My nurse took blood from my arm without a rubber glove, using a large needle, hardly seen any more in modern hospitals and to top it off the nurse started yelling because I moved my arm and blood was all over the table in contact with unprotected surfaces. Should have enquires of victims in NETFLIX. Shame on directors, shame administrative personnel, shame on nurses and shame on doctors. read more
