Please read before considering using this medical provider. I am a law student living in Charlottesville for school. While I am upset about what happened to me, I just want to let others know so they're aware of the risks of seeing these "doctors." I was going to Charlottesville Dermatology for about five months to take the medication Isotretinoin (formerly known as Accutane). The PA (not a dermatologist) that prescribed it to me had a pretty meh personality (Amy Randolph? Rudolph?) and did not answer the questions I had in any sociable way, but I did not really care because I just wanted to get through the medication. I started seeing someone named Ines, and she was better. I always thought their billing/reception staff was pretty rude/incompetent, but again, I viewed this as a temporary relationship, so I didn't change providers. At this point, I probably would have given them 3 stars. For those of you that don't know, Accutane is highly regulated, so female patients must take a pregnancy test monthly per federal law. The doctor's office must then fill the prescription within seven days of that test, or another test is required. That's right, they forgot to fill my prescription, so I had to go back for another pregnancy test and was unable to take my medication for a week. No one apologized. Then I found out through a friend that my medication is unequivocally supposed to be taken with a fat-heavy meal, such as salmon or nuts, to ensure absorption. I immediately verified this online, and according to the Mayo Clinic, it's true. I took an extremely intense and life-altering medication (you have to use two forms of birth control on it and cannot drink more than one drink) only to find out that for five months it likely wasn't properly being absorbed. This could explain why my acne only started to clear up after I started going to UVA's Dermatology group. The kicker is that you can only take so much Accutane in your system, so I now have to go off it. I have no way of knowing how much medication was being absorbed, and I never will. This is medical malpractice, and while I will not pursue legal action, I can only hope that no one else has to. read more

I will say the other day when walking in and waiting almost 45 minutes, I was not happy with the time of day I was given. In the past we have used Dr. Soukoulis (wonderful for my son's acne) and I've seen Katherine Loose numerous times at Nua, but I have to say Dr. Magee was not my cup of tea, and I'm most dissatisfied with her lack of bedside manner. She was in and out of the room in a matter of minutes, and when I pushed back and asked questions, she was visibly annoyed by me (this is even from another reviewer), she threw out some crazy $$$ number and never even mentioned maybe another option!! The copay was a waste of money. There are other Dermatologist in town so don't think this is your only option, the lobby was a zoo. read more

I just had a check up body scan and have all sorts of bumps etc. that I felt overdue and having looked out. I found the office to be quite professional and friendly and efficient. Everything from check in to insurance processing to the time it took for the doctor to get to me, it was great. I felt perfectly comfortable with Dr. McGee who gave me confidence that she knew what she was looking at. I pointed out a couple areas of possible concern, and she explained to me what they were and that they were not dangerous. I will go out back for my annual check ups given this appointment was quick and efficient and I felt comfortable with Dr. McGee's findings. read more

Unprofessional billing and office management services - had a billing dispute, tried calling to resolve it in a standard manner, and received a very personal letter in response asking me essentially not to come back. Regarding my time meeting with Katherine Loose PA, I was on average disappointed with my treatment as a patient. Being a newbie to the skincare treatment space myself (early 30s), I didn't feel like she had much patience helping me pick the best option, fielding questions as if I should have just googled it at home. After this meeting, I had to return due to a painful adverse reaction to a skincare product they had me try, that actually shouldn't be used with certain other products she'd prescribed me I found out later (a bit of an whoops on the office's part, but an honest mistake). I was able to speak with her for about 3 minutes in the waiting area, where she assured me, time and moisturizer would heal all - it took about a month to heal. During my last visit, I was told she wouldn't review the ingredient list of a few skincare products (which I believe many other dermatologists will help with), but her colleague could "if she was around." I found my last session with her so unhelpful, I actually sat in the parking lot after my session to find another derm in the area who would express greater concern for me as their patient. I shouldn't have gone back, but was motivated by the fact that the $80 you pay on your first visit can be applied to future treatments. It's all sunk cost to me at this point. After a few weeks of walking around in pain from an isolated sore on my foot, I made an appointment here. My brother had plantar warts earlier in the year, and these looked very comparable. Dr. Anna Magee came in, took a brief look at my foot, and told me that there was no evidence that these were plantar warts. I expressed to her that they hurt when pressure was applied from the side, there were visible black dots in the centers of the sores, and that it felt as if I was walking on rocks - all signs of plantar warts. She told me that they were corns, on the bottom of my feet, and to scrub them with a pumice stone and get new shoes and a pedicure. She even said the words, "I don't know what the black dots could be." I've since learned that black dots are common in plantar warts as evidence of blood vessels within the wart, keeping the virus alive. I followed her directions, and next thing I know I've spread the warts to my other foot and my hands. I'm now on my third dermatologist appointment, at a different clinic in my hometown, working on having them all frozen off. I'm getting married next month, and I could have had the two isolated warts taken care of months ago had Dr. Magee known what she was talking about. Now, I'm looking at limping down the aisle and skipping out on our hiking excursion during our honeymoon due to severe pain from progressed plantar warts. If she can't even diagnose a wart, I wouldn't trust her with anything more serious. Moreover, beyond her incompetence, I am most dissatisfied with her lack of bedside manner. She was in and out of the room in a matter of minutes, and when I pushed back and asked questions, she was visibly annoyed by me. read more

Dr. Elder and her staff are excellent. I have been using them for 5 years and had very good results. I just had my annual skin exam. Dr. Elder took her time and identified a few problems to watch. She also burnt off two cosmetic growths at my request. read more

Doctors are great but the office staff and receptionist is an absolute nightmare. They tried to charge me a $75 fee for a no show on a tele-doc visit. Those visits take 5 minutes and we were out of town. They would not wave the fee!! The receptionist is a COVId nazi and won't even speak to you if you don't have a mask on. Save your time and money and go to Albemarle. read more

Dr. Ines Soukoulis was great! I realize they have a packed clinic, so I appreciate her thoroughness and speed. I was in and out within 30 minutes and did not have to wait at all. Clearly,​ her training shows she is brilliant - but she also has a wonderful bedside manner and made me feel completely comfortable, a nice balance for a health care provider. read more

These people won't even give you a ballpark price until after you've seen the doctor and it could be anywhere from 60 to way over $200. When I said I didn't think it was reasonable to bill someone when they didn't even know what the price was going to be the receptionist basically said fine and hung up on me. Go somewhere else. read more

To be clear this is not a place practicing medicine. Charlottesville Dermatology is a mill which runs as many people through the doors each days in order to sell as many in house injections, abrasions, freezes, and scrapings as they can. The cherry on top is if they can send you out the door with some over the counter concoction to spread on your skin. I went to them at my family doctor's recommendation that I see a dermatologist to have a more thorough skin check. I was not seeking acne treatment of Botox, so I was probably a drag on their business model. I took time off work to meet their appointment availability. After arriving ten minutes early to process paperwork, I waited for a short time in the waiting room. When I was taken to a examination room with an assistant who discussed my reason for the appointment, I was left alone waiting for thirty five minutes in the dreaded hospital gown. The floor of the examination room had quite a few spots on the floor which appeared to be dried body fluid. Gross. I got impatient and was a bit grossed out so I put my clothes on and left. On my way out the door the check out station attendant picked up on my disappointment, and offered to reschedule an appointment. I took a pass. I received and responded to four generic follow up satisfaction surveys. In all four I recounted this experience, and to date have received NO RESPONSE at all from the clinic; not an email, text, phone call or post card. I guess they are so busy they can burn up a customer and move on to the next. I am sure that there are caring and skilled physicians at this practice, but their business model of being a patient mill obscures whatever healing arts they may have to offer. read more

Great staff and service. As you walk into building 600, go straight and there are glass elevators on your right, hit 2nd floor and then turn left out of the elevator then left again and the office will be the double doors on your left. How many times can I say left? :) This was my first visit there, my appointment was at 3:30 and I was taken back around 3:45. Best news of all is the mole is benign!!!!! read more

Katherine Loose is the best of the best! I used to dread going to dermatology appointments as a freckled, light skinned women. However, since I have found Katherine, I am comfortable making not only routine appointments, but find myself seeing her for anything that comes up. She is approachable, knowledgeable, and always makes me feel like a priority. I have had both microneedling and IPL, which made me look like a new person; my acne scars are gone, as well as my dark spots and fine wrinkles. I would recommend Katherine to anyone in a heartbeat!!!!! She is a gem! read more

The actual doctors may be good, but horrible experience with receptionists. Was put on hold for a long time and promptly forgotten about and sent to voicemail. Called back and got a response but receptionist was not friendly and decided to have a side conversation making fun of someone while I was still on the phone and could over hear. Will not be making an appointment here. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Elder and Catherine, their esthetician. Dr. Elder I found to be honest when I consulted for hyperpigmentation she didn't immediately try to sell me an expensive treatment. She found a change in skin products would do the trick and I switched from drugstore stuff to SkinMedica and it helped a lot. A couple of years later I decided to do a peel with Catherine and I had a pleasant experience. She was very friendly and my skin looked good after the 3 peel package. I also began using their brand skin products which are very reasonably priced and work well. Their entire staff is very friendly. Keep up the good service! read more

CARELESS. I will preface this situation by first saying, I understand with any dermatological treatment, there is an associated risk of something going awry. That said, this situation evolved out of an act of both negligence and ignorance and could, and should, have been easily avoided with better training. I came in to Charlottesville Dermatology for laser hair removal, and now my face looks like someone has put 100 cigarettes out on it. A month prior to my appointment, Katherine, the laser technician, advised me to begin using Retin-A (a topical treatment). One month after using Retin-A, I had my appointment and my skin was severely burned. I have had this treatment done several times and have never had a reaction like this and believe it occurred with the combination of the laser treatment and use of Retin-A. When I called CD to tell them about the burns, Katherine asked if I had been using Retin-A daily and when I said yes, she responded that she didn't know I was using so often, per her instructions a month earlier, and that I should have stopped using it a few days prior to treatment. This was incredibly careless. Although Katherine assured me that laser treatments are successfully performed on clients who use Retin-A, after speaking with other skin care professionals, also laser technicians, their opinion was that laser treatments and Retin-A do not mix and that they would NEVER perform a treatment on someone using Retin-A, because the ointment thins skin. Additionally, the treatment was performed at 30 joules, again, other professionals in the industry assured me this was much too high. C'ville Derm has promised to reimburse me, confirming that the reaction I had truly was a result of carelessness. While I am happy for the reimbursement, it hardly compensates for the discomfort, stress, inconvenience, and overhanging worry of having permanently damaged skin the appointment has caused. I HIGHLY discourage anyone from having laser treatments done here, as this situation could CERTAINLY have been avoided if the technician had thought through the fact that I was currently using Retin-A on my face, and had simply advised me not to use it a few days prior to the appointment, or if she had recognized and that laser treatment was not a good idea. read more

I saw Dr. Magee for very cracked, swollen, bleeding thumbs. I presented the fingers, and without touching them, she declared she had 'just the thing'. She wrote out a prescription and said it was the Rolls Royce of creams. She began to end the session, when I stated I had more questions. I asked about recurrance, she replied I needed to use 'lots of moisturizers' it was a type of dermatitis. Before the doctor entered the room, an assistant escorted me to the exam room. She stated they had been waiting for me (I was five minutes EARLY), the person before me had not showed up, and they wanted to go to lunch. I have never been so rushed by a doctor, nor have I ever encountered one who did not ask if I had any other questions. As Dr. Magee began to leave the room, I stated I wanted to know about Juvederm. She reached into a display unit and gave me a Juvederm information leaflet. She said they had 'wrinkle free Wednesday' once a month, and I could come and get more information. I expect my $90. appoinment did not include that. I was very disappointed in the experience. The cream is working, but I have no idea how long it should take, what to expect, or if I should limit my activities until the skin heals. This is poor and unprofessional practice. read more
