Chartle Charter's saved our vacation! The day we were heading up to Santa Cruz our charter with another company was canceled last minute. We called Chartle and within 15 minutes Raina had the entire Taylor-Gene boat reserved for our party of 6 for the next day. We caught a 6 man limit of rockfish in 3 hours! Even a few Lingcod! I've done the large group fishing charters before and they were fun, but now that I've been fishing with Captain Joe, this is the way to go! I'm a total novice and was fine to just hold the fishing pole from the safety of my seat on the cooler while Captain Joe did most of the bait catching and then hooking that bait on my hook and then helping me bring in all the fish that kept jumping onto that hook. I could have been as involved as I wanted to be but uggghhhhh, my stomach was not being super cooperative so I mostly just held the lucky rod and waited for the fish to bite and ended up catching five of the six cod we took home. (Note to my boyfriend: Sorry I'm not sorry I accidentally KICKED YOUR ASS at fishing!!) Thank you Captain Joe for such a great day out on the water! And for not being annoyed that I didn't know what I was doing! And for answering all my questions about the map/sonar thing! And for heading for calmer waters when you heard me say I was feeling queasy! And for cleaning our fish! And for teaching me how to use the toilet! (I recommend using the one in the bait shop before you depart because the toilet on board was a challenge and the fewer times you have to go, the better.) Basically, it's a good thing this wasn't a big boat with lots of people because apparently I am a high maintenance fisherman. read more

I am an avid fisherman, and typically pretty picky about who I fish with- always very hesitant to be on an "expensive boat ride". I study the gear, the boat, watch the radar, even take careful note of the captains knots and condition of the lures. Captain Joe did not disappoint in anyway, shape or form! We were out for a bachelor party and he quickly began to laugh and joke with the group, and immediately on the fish. We limited out on rockfish and moved on to the Lings, where we wound up with seven keepers including a 25lbers! After the trip the fish were clean impeccably. Yes this is the boat charter to take. Good boat and nice people. I waited after going 3 times with my kids and tried other places before I wrote this review. We did 2 afternoon nearshore rock cod fishing and 1 combo nearshore and crab trip. I wanted to get my kids off their computers and introduce them to fishing. Shore fishing got too boring. This Summer I looked into a private charter, I did not want to be on one of those large charters with grumps. I wanted a good experience. After calling around, I got reccomendations to Chartle. Great Captain Joe who is great with kids and will teach them how to fish. He has fished every where, a local, and is very knowledgable. Not all captains are even remotely good with kids. And the style of fishing he uses keeps kids constantly interested. Great deck hand (Craig) who was also very nice and great with kids. The admin. person Raina was very nice and professional. All were happy when we caught fish. Near shore trips resulted in no seasick. The boat was clean, wider so more stable, and no engine smells. I cant say that for the others I tried. Fishing: all caught limits on rock cod and couple ling cods. Both my kids wanted to come back. Family loved the fish. They provided all the equipment and bait. This is the easiest for parents and reunions. Most of the other passengers where repeat clients with kids as well. Parents if you want a great experience and more personal service than a large charter, this is the one. If you want to hang out with buddies and have a good time, this is the one. You wont regret it. I am not going to get into the other boats I tried, they werent even close. read more

A great day on the water. This was our second father-and-son fishing trip with Captain Joe, and much like our first trip, it did not disappoint. (In fact, our initial experience was so good, I did not even bother looking at other charter groups for this most recent trip.) My dad also wanted it noted that "Joe knows where to find the fish!" And he's right -- Joe had us out with fish biting on the line in no time at all. Joe's also a great fishing coach, patient and friendly. It should also be noted that Raina, who handles the booking, is also very friendly and efficient, and was quick to respond to schedule change request. Went out with Joe for a buddies birthday and didn't know what to expect. I was blown away. Joe is an amazing captain and a man of integrity! He wanted us to have the best time possible and did everything he could to make it happen. Using the light tackle was best part of it all! He knows all the spots and got our group hooking up left and right! He showed us a bunch of great white sharks as well! In the end, I was able to catch a big halibut in light tackle and that memory will last forever! As a frequent guest on charters- this one is different. It's about the fishing and old school way. Went on an almost last minute Trip with Joe and had a great time. He put us on fish at each stop and knew where to target the species. I arrived with a couple bottles of water and Joe had the rest: poles, tackle and he unhooked the fish for us. He also took time to tell us tips on the species we were targeting in effort to maximize our catch. Loved it that there's only a handful of people on the trips too. This made it less likely for us to cross our lines. read more

Had a magnificent day on the water with Captain Greg. He took us right out to the deep water where the fish were, knowing that the inshore spots were a little played out. My uncle and friend from the UK, brother, and work buddy all hooked in fast and furious. Caught some great ling cod, tons of rockfish, and even a sole. Greg's a top notch captain, and was willing to work the boat, take care of the tackle, and even chop the bait to keep us pulling. Greg expertly filleted the huge pile of fish while we grabbed a beer and a chowder in Johnny's watched him work (decadent!) Highly recommended - we're all back at the house now ready to grill up some of that fish. read more

I usually average 70~100 days of fishing per year so needless to say I'm addicted to fishing. I do various trips all over (party boats, 6-pack charters, skiff boats, shore) and for local charter fishing, fishing with Captain Joe with Chartle Charters is a blast. He KNOWS the local Santa Cruz waters and that's exactly what I'm looking for in a charter captain (ie. that's whats important to catch fish). It will make the difference between a slow day with nothing vs. a slow day with limits at the end of the day. Whether you're fishing for a local rockfish trip or hunting for bonito/blue fin game fish, he is my first choice. Boat has plenty of deck space to fish and comfortable ride. I highly recommend Chartle Charters for families with children. We took our 5, 6, and 7 year olds out to the sea expecting a fun trip where we put a few lines in the water. Little did we know that this 4 hour tour would be a full soup to nuts fishing lesson. The kids were thrilled from the moment that we stepped on the boat and they were able to play with the live bait and learn about everything that was to come. We ended up with a gorgeous, relaxing day and learned how to do everything from drop the lines to cleaning and prepping the filets. We even have weeks worth of dinner now stored in our freezer! It was so amazing to teach the kids where our food comes from and how much work is involved in the process. The highlight was a HUGE ling cod who had a big belly full of food. We were curious what was inside and discovered THREE octopi (at least 8 inches long each) in there! The captain and his mate were so friendly, helpful, and great with the kids. They even opened up our wine so we could sit and relax while they were on the deck with the kiddos! Best afternoon ever! read more

We did the afternoon Charter with my 15 year old son, his friend from visiting from Chile, and my business partner. The boat can handle up to 6 anglers, so we had plenty of room. I have been on different charter boats, but Captain Joe is tops in my book. For me the bottom line is he knows where the fish are AND he cares a great deal about making sure his guests catch fish.
