Beware! Basic competence is an issue at this bank. I've been a customer for many years and have been subject to many an error made by bank staff, but recently things have taken a turn for the worse and as soon as I'm able, I'll close my accounts here. For example:
When I asked for the balance on my account, a teller mistakenly gave me my mother's account info. (our last names are the similar but not the same). This was a major breech of privacy. I wonder to whom they are giving out my private financial information?
I went to the bank to give them a copy of my mother's death certificate and to ask them to close her credit card account. The banker took the information and assured me the credit card account would be closed, and then summoned over an investments banker who questioned me closely about the value of my mother's estate as they wanted to sell me their investment services. Not only was this inappropriate, but weeks later I went to the bank to conduct some business, and they had no record of my mother's death certificate and had not closed out her credit card account. I was required to resubmit the paperwork. Where did this paperwork go? The young banker shrugged off my concern about this turn of events and simply said he would handle getting my mother's account closed.
I received an email saying my checking account was overdrawn but when I looked at the balance on my account, I saw that it was not overdrawn. When I called the customer service number to question why I received the email, I was put on hold and passed around to several people, one of whom asked me for the decedent's social security number. When I told her I was still alive, she seemed confused and ultimately said she didn't know why I received this email. Days later, I found out that a deposit check was not credited to my account for over 10 days and this caused some checks to bounce. To this day, there is no record of these checks having gone through my account. The only way I know that they were returned is that I received letters from the vendors. I guess I should be glad I wasn't charged a bank bounce fee, but why was their no timely notification or record of return in my on-line account? When I talked to a bank representative over the phone about the problem, it was sloughed off as no big deal and not worth investigating (at least I think it's what the rep said, his accent was so thick I couldn't really understand him and after asking him to repeat several times, I gave up. I get the feeling the call center is outsourced to somewhere in Asia). So far, this has caused me over $50 in vendor fees for the checks bouncing.
The tellers are all very friendly and treat you like they have known you all their life and that you are their bestie, but can provide very few actual services. Found out today that I would have to wait in queue to see a banker to get a print out of my latest statement or to request a new debit card. These are basic services which should be provided at the teller window, IMO.
Many banks have a copy machine on the premises and for a dime or a quarter one can make a copy of document in the lobby. There was a women who was just standing about (while customers were sitting around waiting to talk to a banker) and I asked her if the bank had a copy machine. She said that the bank did have a copy machine. I asked her to point it out to me and she said (with what I thought was a mild rebuke) that clients are not allowed to use the copy machine. Did she think that I was taking a survey and needed to know if the bank had a copy machine to include in my data? I was more rankled by the woman's dumb response than the fact that the bank doesn't have a copy machine for customers.
Last quarter I got a call from someone at the bank who spoke to me so casually, I thought that she was a friend who I just wasn't able to place at first - turns out she was just calling to see if she could help me with anything at Chase. This was a "courtesy call." The tone of the call was weird, as if she had known me for years and was just checking in to see how I was doing. I wish the bank spent more time on getting it right instead of pretending to be the customer's best friend.
So, hating this bank a lot! Don't go there if you don't want a big dose of incompetence! read more
