Red sauce, pasta, various leaden "parm" dishes, boiled-to-death vegetables and the ubiquitous iceberg lettuce, plastic tomato and one-slice of cucumber salad with an acrid raw onion slice in it. I went back last evening with another couple that has been out of state for several years. Since it is a landmark for Walthamites and a congregating point for old friends we had dinner there. The establishment had far fewer customers seated than prior years. I noticed a lot of takeout was occurring . We were seated in the smaller dining room which eventually filled to 80% capacity. (Time: 5-7 p.m.). I must say the meals were terrific. My guests said they really enjoyed their choices. I did notice the bar area had far fewer customers than what I had been accustomed to seeing. Great service here, very traditional Italian place and a pillar of the local community. Pizza good, pasta better, salads best.

I'm not angry, just disappointed. Ordered two burgers done medium, one without tomato and one with a few extras. Both came well done and had the tomato on it. If I had a food allergy I would have had to throw it out. Also ordered a Caesar salad which tastes fine but came with a half filled cup of dressing... not enough. For the food prices, the quality is not up to snuff. Finally, big red flag that the owner has responded to all recent reviews essentially telling the reviewer they're wrong. Overall a pretty great experience! I had the Italian combo, which came with chicken parm and a cheese ravioli in cream sauce. Both were excellent, and reasonably priced. My girlfriends drink was good but way too strong for both of us. Service was ok. Our waiter did a good job with checking in on us. But when we asked to split the bill, he replied that we couldn't because "he already put the order in." I thought that was strange because I never have had a problem splitting the bill at any other restaurant. Took 25 minutes to get my meal (Italian Combo consisting of a small veal cutlet and a single paper thin slice of eggplant, that were obviously fried yesterday, and a mound of linguine topped with sauce that wasn't even as good as their branded jarred sauce at Market Basket made by Pastene) My salad came just AFTER my entree, with not so much as an apology, which only led to eating a luke-warm meal...had to ask for cheese and crushed red pepper My wine, which I ordered with the meal came out after I asked twice and had already finished my meal Server NEVER ONCE inquired how anything was What looked like a lead or a manager of sorts passed the table several times without even a greeting The bill came and I was charged incorrectly (substantially undercharged but I couldn't take advantage of that because they didn't bring me a pen) I was honestly so agitated by now that I couldn't even address my issues with anyone out of a desire to not lose my cool and be rude, I just needed to go... My wife and I have been patrons of the restaurant for over 50 years. Although the pandemic limited our visits these past few years we both noticed the quality of the meals had depreciated when we did visit . We attributed this to all the fallout caused by the pandemic , the economy and supposed shipping problems along with problems in the workforce. Today we visited for lunch with another couple and the four of us agreed that we will never return. We ordered off the luncheon menu and with the exception of the salad the meals were hardly eatable. The bread was not fresh and the after dinner coffee was lukewarm. A sorry decline from a once enjoyable experience. read more

We recently held a bereavement luncheon at The Chateau in Waltham in the Wine Room. Our guests had a choice of lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and haddock st. germaine. All meals came with salad, bread, tea, coffee, and a cannoli for dessert. The wait staff was prompt and professional. The food was great as always. The room was cozy and just the right size. We appreciated the private room and only being charged for those who had a meal. Many thanks to the Chateau for helping us celebrate the life of our Aunt Marion. read more

I agree that this place has gone down a bit. I remember so many good times there... But for right now I think I'm going to just wait and see if the Chateau management can figure this out. Recently, I was riding down the street with a friend making conversation, and she launched into a story about how the Chateau had let her down. We used to visit the Chateau all the time as kids and when we grew up. This used to be the go to Italian restaurant in Waltham for years. We went Friday night and were extremely disappointed in the quality and quantity of the food. Ordered the Italian antipasto, size was horrible and the offerings on it were few except lettece and that was not a lot. For the price totally not worth it. Also had the fried seafood platter and the fried clam platter. Both had no taste, were small servings and seemed to be cooked in old oil. We decided we will not be visiting for food again after this last experience. read more

I have been coming to this location for years. Have been to parties here and just regular dinner with loved ones. I always thought it was delicious. Since covid hit I have dined in and picked up food. I kept trying hoping it would get better again. I got the chicken broccoli and penne. It use to be my favorite. The chicken looks like perdue cuts not fresh chicken and the pasta tastes reheated. I am very disappointed and wish you would go back to the way you use to be. This is the first time I've ever done a review. This is something I never do, but I do feel strongly about this restaurant. It's been quite a while since my wife and I have been to the Chateau, so we figured we would give it a go. She had a $25.00 gift card she wanted to use. Starting from the beginning. The hostess was pleasant and showed us to a table. And the waitress was very good as well. Our order was promptly taken. And our drinks came fast enough. They were not bar drinks. No sooner than my wife & I started talking about her day at work our food arrived. Very fast. Mcdonald's fast. I thought that was a little odd. Nevertheless, we were hungry, so we dug in. My wife's chicken parm was cold. We flagged down our waitress and she said that she would have the kitchen prepare a new plate for her. The new plate came quickly and was to my wife's liking. My Veal parm was ok, but it was not the way I remember it from past visits. When we got home, we both had stomach discomfort. I think we will give the Chateau a break for a while. read more

Was here recently for a Baby Shower in the Function room, everything was done great, the room was HUGE, food was delicious, Servers were attentive & over accommodating! Went last night before a night out. Got there early enough for the early bird menu. Told waiter we were going to order from the early bird. Carlos disappeared until 5:01 and says you're going to be mad at me. You can't get there early bird. Nothing i can do. Disappointed but fine. We pick out regular menu items and get calamari for an app. Takes 15 mins to come it was good. My salad never came I'm getting aggravated it's been half an hour two of the people in our party don't want us to say anything claiming it food will come soon. No bread no one on restaurant our waiter Carlos looks at us multiple times with no food nothing. Finally i ask him to check our food order and he comes back after 10 mins and said i put your order in half way through you finishing the calamari it's going to be a little while longer. This is now 50 mins in from ordering and we need to head to Boston. I told him forget it and get a manager. Getting a manager took 10 minutes more and a very unprofessional guy comes out literally looking like a busboy. Told him the situation and he says I'll be back. Apparently seeing if he can do anything. He disappears so long i have to ask Carlos to get him again. Long story short no apology makes us pay for all drinks and calamari. My family has been coming here for 50 years or more and this place has fallen so far. Very disappointed. This was my single worst experience at a restaurant since I've been alive 55 years. read more

Fact is as a consumer and paying customer I was dissatisfied Spin it anyway you want but the fact is the quality of the food you serve has gone downhill. You can ignore my negative reviews and ignore the problem. Quite frankly you will end up like a lot of companies who instead of taking corrective action to fix your shortcomings choose to bury your head in the sand and ignore them. Been going to Chateau since 1977. Eat there once per month. The last 6 months the food has been getting progressively worse. The final straw was last week I ordered lasagna that was dry as sawdust. Went to the world famous (to my wife who grew up in Watertown) Chateau Restaurant. I've heard about it for over 35 years and finally had the chance to go when visiting. I must say it did not disappoint at all, food was very good and the bread was excellent. I'm use to Italian bread having a crusty outside but there's is soft but it was good. Got the chicken parm and my wife had the roasted ravioli. Both were very good and we needed to take a to go box since the portion was huge. read more

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. The one in Burlington is Stupendous! Our meal here last night was ... meh. Our waitress did not introduce herself, ask if we wanted to know about specials, it was just "Do you know what you want?" I mean, I don't need to be besties, but at least say hello. We ordered our drinks and our meals, and within 5-8 minutes, our meals were delivered and literally plopped down in front of us. She said nothing. NOTHING. "Do you need anything else?" - yes I did, but you did not ask! I got the eggplant parm - my go to dinner! - and it was not hot. It was tepid, and the melted cheese was so cooled off it required a knife to cut it. The angel hair pasta with it was hot, but very stingy on the sauce. I sent it back, and apparently they microwaved it, because it was the exact same plate, but with an additional ladle of sauce slopped onto the side of the pasta. Hubby got chicken marsala, and it was awful. Not hot, and the chicken had the look and texture of having been cooked yesterday and stored overnight. Gross. His pasta was nice and hot, but he mentioned there was very little marsala sauce on the dish and so it was even drier. Alcohol beverages saved this review from being a 2 star write up. Delicious martini, and very nice glass of wine in a nice heavy glass. We will not be back. :( We will stick with Burlington. read more

Briefly- far too overpriced for the food. Don't waste your time here. As other have mentioned, portions are small and the food not only tastes poor, it's also far too expensive. They gave us cold low quality chewy white bread. When we asked for it to be toasted, the server was rude but eventually did it. Even then, it wasn't well toasted. We ordered their "special" pizza for the meal and 1- it smelled bad 2- it was soggy- wet enough that the toppings oils slide off (I don't think the picture captured it) 3- the toppings were just raw on top. The onion and bell pepper felt like they were heated for 1 minute in a microwave. We Final takes- absolutely not worth your time. There's way better places in the area. read more

This is the year of the big breakups -- breakups with places I used to love. It's me, not you. . . to some extent. I'm on WW now, and I really care about what I'm eating and the quality of the food. If I'm going to use my points, it had better be worth it! So, here's my break-up with the Chateau. Had the WORST meal here in September. Some of it had to do with the family argument about Brett Kavanaugh, but most of it was the exorbitant price of not delicious food. Swore we'd never be back. . . and we haven't actually returned to the restaurant. I'm not paying for terrible food AND leaving a tip. Fast forward to tonight, I told my husband I was in the mood for Italian. He suggests the Chateau. I literally say, "But it's not good anymore." But, we still order. I got the eggplant parm sandwich - so gross. It comes on soggy Chateau bread. I got the side of onion rings. How do you mess up an onion ring? Well, the Chateau can tell you. Make them uncooked and raw and hard on the inside, and very greasy on the outside. Not good. My husband mopped up his trio in a minute because the Chateau sauce is good. I just ate a few bites, mourned the $40 spent on this gross meal, and then ate the 2 pieces of Chateau bread we were given. Only 2 pieces. They're so cheap with the quality and the portions. I called someone in their back room, maybe Janet?, 4+ times last year to donate a gift card to our Watertown school auction. They're too cheap to part with a $25 gift card. She kept giving me the run-around -- telling me she has to ask Big Joe, or something like that. Just a yes or a no. . . blech. So many memories here, like my college graduation party - with a huge room full of people. So many catered parties from here. . . buh bye, and we won't be going out again! read more

2nd time in a row that they failed to send the complete order. When I called to mention it I was told to come pick it up then hung up on. When I went to pick up the order the door was locked. ( there were other people picking up thier order waiting with me) I was treated like trash. When I tried to speak with the manager (gale) about being hung up on, she brushed it off as being phone issue sayng they've had an issue today. I had ordered a catering order earlier today for a communion that was missing items as well. Sad to see such a good establishment go do like this. read more

Dont get me wrong. I've been a Chateau fan since the mid-80s. I live a good distance from Waltham and when I come in [today by commuter rail] for a meal at the Chateau, I have high expectations. Sadly today's meal [there were two of us] fell far short. The failure was one of the most basic requirements of an enjoyable meal: serve food hot. Both our entrees were lukewarm at best upon arrival and cool by the time we finished. We chose to take home leftovers so they could be heated and eaten at a proper temperature. The flavor of their sauce et al was still there [and of course their great bread], but not the temp. So sad cuz it'll be a while before I take a chance again. P.S. I'm not a fan of sending cool food back to the kitchen. One strike, you're out. And so am I. read more
