Sure, they don't have the fancy reclining seats... as a matter of fact, the seats are not that comfortable. Yes, it's a bit musty from decades of use, but that said it's a nostalgic theater and a great place to see a movie with family and friends. The screen is big, and the picture quality is great. The sound system is first-rate, the ticket and concession prices are reasonable and it's conveniently located. They also show interesting indie films that you can't see in big theaters. Projection and sound ok. Old seats, carpet saw better years a few years ago. $8 most of the time. 1980's style concession stand. Bathrooms meh. But there are two big reasons to still drop a 3 on it. One, they have art films you may have to travel to Manhattan, and two, they play 1 coming attraction with no commercials. Update-I'm bumping it up a star, because I really appreciate having a theater nearby that offers art films and documentaries. Last night SimplyBlue and I saw 'Echo in the Canyon', featuring the music scene in Laurel Canyon in the mid/sixties. Seeing archival footage of the Byrd's, Buffalo Springfield, Beach Boys, followed by interviews with many of the surviving members, was terrific. Next mid-week date night will be seeing the documentary on Pavarotti! read more

Back but with a few hiccups. The hvac techs were working just outside the theatre door with parts and equipment strewn in the hallway. We were the only attendees at our matinee. Word is probably not out yet that they reopened. Gone is the free coffee and eclectic beverage selection. Will they be showing foreign and art house selections? The fellow at the desk didn't know . Three stars for overall experience. The projection and sound were A-OK. Had to come back and drop it to two stars as I just remembered that the theater had not been cleaned since the night before. Popcorn cartons and junk on the floor. Also the show didn't start on time and when I went out to mention it to the guy at the counter, he had no idea. read more

We are so lucky to have this little theater in Chatham. You won't find Transformer VII here or any other schlock film. Independent and foreign films are shown for a week or two. No reclining seats but the screen and sound are decent and the prices are reasonable. Support this place. It's a gem that has made our suburban lives better. read more

If you didn't know where this place was, you wouldn't find it. Tucked around the corner from the CVS and next to some unassuming shops like "Doggy Styles" pet grooming, this theater looks more like an lonely coffee shop. But once you stop and read the movie posters on the window, you realize that this theater shows films you would normally need to trek far and wide to see (by that I mean Montclair or NYC). The single screen theater is long and narrow (think Film Forum but without the columns). Last night there was a constant unrecognizable noise (think Angelika) in the background. So why four stars? A top notch movie selection, free coffee, and no kids left to run amok through the theater is worth four stars all the time. read more

Quaint, clean, well-maintained cinema. Concessions are reasonably priced and staff is friendly. Great selection of foreign and independent movies that you'd otherwise have to go to NYC to see. I'm glad that this place is still around and look forward to visiting again soon! read more

A relic from the past. Great movies on the artsy side. Run, don't walk to this theatre. There aren't many left and they are a disappearing breed. Advantages: No advertisements, usually a single trailer, low prices by today's standards , free regular and decaf coffee, decent parking (also free). Prices for junk food and drinks are lower than most places. Possible disadvantages-For those who are being dragged to a movie by a spouse , there are no reclining seats upon which to doze quietly. Although the place is large, trendy first run movies draw crowds which create a bit of a jam in the parking areas adjacent to the theatre. Just park a bit further down in the mall. If you are looking for an old school throw back movie theater, this is it. You won't get the brand new style of sound, video and seating, but you will get a friendly and clean theatre straight out of 1975. They don't have the first run, super hit movies, but the selection is great for off- beat and indie films. Throw in the fact that you could pass by it a thousand times before you even realized it is there and it is a true hidden gem. There is a mini "restaurant row" right next to it so it is perfect for dinner and a movie! read more

Nothing overly remarkable about this cinema and nothing bad; just a clean old fashioned cinema tucked away in the mountains of Morris County. A friendly indie theater from the 70's that's clean and maintained. It has one screen and was a no frills experience. Concession and gift cards available. Updated seats and surprisingly clean and fun for the age. Nice and polite clientele. We'll return without a doubt. Glad that this is still around. read more

I love this cinema. It has the films the other bigger theatres won't show. It was one of the first area cinemas to show Slumdog Millionaire before it went mainstream. The cinema only shows one film and my guess is that the owners hand pick one flick that they believe is a great film that the other places will pass on. Beware this cinema shows adult films, not porn but films that only adults will want to see. read more

This is my favorite place to see films in New Jersey -- I became addicted when I was in high school, and whenever I visit my parents, I usually stop by to see whatever art house flick is on view. The theatre is long and narrow -- my favorite -- and there are usually plenty of open seats. It's a little gem tucked into a strip mall! read more

I have recently enjoyed a few movies at Robert's Cinema . I decided to pop over today,6-27, my BD to see The Chef. I gave my $20 to a grayed haired man with a mustache. The price was $9.50. So I started to give him 4 dimes and 2 nickels. He became exasperated. I asked what was wrong. He told me he wasn't a bank. He didn't want my coins---although he gave me change including coins. As I walked away I said Happy Birthday to me----he says yeah lady. I turned around--went back and asked for my money back. He was very unkind. Great customer service. I guess I'll have something to talk about with my husband and friends during my BD dinner tonight. My real concern is that this unkind man is the owner. No matter what; he could use a class in customer service skills. read more

I would love to add more stars for this wonderful theater! My accolades are for the honest and most kind staff of Roberts Chatham Cinema. Unintentionally, my wallet dropped out of my purse while I was enjoying Silver Linings Playbook last evening. I was beside myself searching for it. Luckily for me, Anna, the manager answered my phone call and confirmed that one of the staff had brought it to her at the end of the night and it was safely in "lost & found". My husband and I have always had such great experiences at Roberts Chatham. You're greeted by friendly folks who always take time to discuss the cinema being shown, and you can always review a list of movies yet to come. We've seen movies here that have not yet made it to our local cinema. We enjoy the drive, the warm friendly atmosphere, not to mention the really good eateries surrounding Roberts Chatham. The theater is a wonderful venue for new artists on display in the lobby -- I myself purchased a lovely piece here. Just the nicest people, the best atmosphere, and being treated like part of a circle with common interests. Always look forward to a trip to Roberts Chatham. It's a gem of a theater that is set apart from so many others in many subtle ways. We hope it will continue its ability to show the very best pics of the so many inconsequential movies out there. This theater is great. They show fine, excellent films--not the films shown in all the chain theaters. Plus it's noncommercial--they show no commercials, their concession stand is reasonably-priced, and they are independently owned. I try to support this theater whenever I can and avoid the chains that show the same stupid low-brow movies. read more

Since I discovered this theater I rarely go elsewhere. The films are very good, the place is relaxing and the price is reasonable.
