We stepped in here somewhat randomly while we were in Montclair, mainly because someone opened the door and we caught whiffs of something fragrant and delicious. Like the famed Toucan Sam, we followed our noses inside. There are two menus here, and if you arrive while lunch specials, your server will automatically bring you the menu with the specials. I overheard a nearby table asking for 'the other menus', and based on their conversation, it seemed like they wanted the bigger portions of the dinner menus. Something to keep in mind if you're especially hungry. That said, my husband and I were more than satisfied with our lunch specials. We were given a metal pot filled to the top with rice AND a basket of four naan, each of which were branded with tandoori char and given a generous brush of fat before arriving at our table. Both were excellent eating vessels for our curries. We ordered the chana masala and the chicken tikka masala. The chickpea curry was fragrant, and while some of the chicken pieces were drier than we would've liked, the sauce was incredible. Our surprising favorite was the baigan bharta, a curry made with fire-roasted eggplant. We couldn't stop dragging pieces of naan through this tasty bowl, leaving us to nickname it thereafter the Indian Baba Ghanoush.'. Service left something to be desired. When we walked in, there was a single server who clearly wanted to be anywhere but by our table side. Interactions were kept short and curt, and there was such little warmth and welcome from the moment we arrived, when we awkwardly waited by the entrance and waited to be acknowledged. In the end, we're so glad we came in, because the food is outstanding. If you make it in time for the weekend lunch specials (which includes your choice of two entrees, rice, and naan), know you're in for a reasonably priced and decently filling meal. Weekday lunch specials are even more fairly priced, with meals under $11.

Lunch special

Linch special has a great price, they don't trick you and give you enough meat, which is rare nowadays. I like that server doesn't run to you every 5 minutes and don't ask fake "how is everything?"'while you chewing .

Finally got around to trying this place and I would say it was just okay. No major qualms, but nothing amazing. For starters, I ordered the chicken 65 and my wife ordered the Samosa Chaat--she mistakenly thought they were regular samosas. It's basically a deconstructed version with pieces of bread in a stew form. She did enjoy it very much. The flavor was quite nice on top of the basmati rice that came with it. The Chicken 65 was very good, but not as spicy as I would have liked. For mains I got the Goat Biryani and the wife got Lamb Saag. For the goat the flavor was amazing, fresh cardamom was coming through. I just wish there was more goat--the meat was tender, but overall dry. The Kamb Saag on the other hand was bursting with flavor. It had a good amount of lamb in there too. Delivery came in about 45 minutes, so not bad at all. Overall, everything was decent. I would give them another try or not. IDK.

Chana Masala

I have ordered from here a few times from DoorDash. This time I order Chana masala and on the menu, it does not specify it having cashews. I am allergic to nuts. It gave me an allergic reaction. I looked it up and Chana masala does not usually have nuts. Places have to do better with specify ingredients, especially common allergies! I like the butter chicken the naan and the mango lassi.

There are many Indian restaurants to try, but Chatni gives you a delicious menu to sample that is not lacking in flavor and provides an ample amount to share. And instead of ordering naan with your meal, try the poori! The service was satisfactory. I didn't feel rushed, but well attended. The mango lassi was very thick and may prove to be too filling with your meal, but definitely worth a try. The chicken tikka masala and vegetable samosas were so good. The ambiance is very cozy, but I noticed there were many pick up orders. The only downside I could see is that sadly they do not deliver. Chatni is a must try for sure!

Good take out that was 3 good meals for me. I ended up getting the chicken tiki masala mild because I was scared of it being overly spicy but I'd definitely get the spicy next time as the mild was a little too bland. I would definitely like to try more items on the menu!

Delivery Order - Kind of having mixed feeling about the food. Veg Sampler (Appetizers) was just average with barely any seasoning, and they did not seem fresh. Biryani good, but some of the Lamb pieces were overcooked and chewy. Noodles was pretty good. I have a feeling their Indo-Chinese and Curries will probably taste better

The 5 stars doesn't even to tell how the experience was or how delicious the food was! They don't open until 1130, but greeted us in around 1110, sat us and began food service, even apologized that things weren't prepared. The decor was extremely nice, quaint, clean and very intimate, with traditional paintings and music playing. It worked for lunch and would definitely work for a nice dinner date or somewhere nice without breaking the bank. This trip was a working lunch for 2 and their lunch special was a belly buster. For around $11.00, you get a choice of 1 protein and 1 vegetable dish or 2 vegetable dishes. The food was served in these beautiful dishes, but you don't know how much food you actually have until you start to eat. It felt like a well, just unreal amount of food. They ask how spicy you want your dish, I went with the spicy because I can handle heat and it was extremely delicious. We ordered some samosas, which were homemade and are the best I've ever had, and I've had a ton all around the globe. They had a few lassi drinks, the avocado special was very refreshing and helps cut the heat from the dish. I will definitely come here again the next time I'm ever out in New Jersey!!

The customer service is good. You can order on phone and take out. They have a whole marinated chicken biryani like not white rice just for the chicken biryani lovers The gravies are adjusted according to our requirements of spice levels.

Chili Momo (veggie dumplings)

Chatni is top notch Indian Cuisine tucked away in Montclair. No matter if you are a seasoned Indian grub muncher (like my Tibetan friend who joined me), or a beginner (like myself), you will absolutely find a dish that you'll love! With an entire page of vegetarian dishes, and entire page for fish meals, and endless appetizers and soups/salads, you will not be disappointed! We ordered chili momo (vege dumplings), garlic Naan, chicken Jalfrezi, and tofu+vege biryani. Featured below are only the vege dumplings because we ate way too fast to take more pics !! So we will definitely have to come back

Walked in today, and saw numerous drain flies all around on the walls. Found that extremely unhygienic, walked right back out!

Dry rubbery chicken. Felt that the meat was not freshly made (bad taste and reactions). The ambiance and service is good.

Another stop on my first Jackson Heights food tour. This Nepalese spot offers Nepali foot,…read moreBhutanese food, Tibetan food, and Indian food. The food types are similar but offer different spice/flavor profiles. They have a large section of noodles, soup, and rice. A veggie section with various combos of cauliflower, potatoes, onion, bamboo, blackened peas, mustard greens, and spices. Some of the Indian dishes: paneer butter masala, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala. Some of the appetizers include crispy tofu, fried soybeans, a Nepali snack platter with marinated meat, goat, beef tripe, sliced beef tongue, fried jerky, duck. They also have a momo section. We had their famous chicken lollipops (essentially fried chicken) and it was crispy and spicy (in a good way). We also had sadeko (marinated or tossed) bacon, which was rich and tender. I had one of their Nepali cocktails, which was pleasantly spicy (the chatpata aam, made with tequila, spicy chatpatey syrup, and mango puree). Service was attentive. Inside is cozy, lots of dark wood and colorful flags. They also often have entertainment in the evening, so I would love to return to hear some live music while trying more Nepali cuisine.

A bit overrated and overshadowed by the nice ambiance…read more I may be biased since I've been to Nepal twice and my palate consisted of dal bhat every single day I was there (momos were a luxury on the trek)--which in no way makes me an expert, but the taste and portions were pretty consistently similar among most places. The first time that I came here was about 3 years ago with a few friends and we liked the food - the beef tongue was different and super memorable and the jhol momos were just swimming in flavorful curry. Made me want to come back again. Fast-forward three years later, I feel like things have changed significantly. Or maybe I didn't catch them at their best, but I came with another group of friends and I just felt overall disappointed with the food, as did my friends who were excited to try Himalayan food for the first time. I had the goat dhat bhat and the small amount of meat served in aesthetically pleasing bowls to mask the portion was disappointing--and this was not a lunch special or anything. I mainly got a big bone and realistically got about 2-3 small bites of actual meat, while there was an overwhelming amount of rice and veggies. The momos also tasted like they were pre-made and heated or steamed up again because the dough was definitely a little rough. Overall, this experience was a meh for me. I think it is a social staple for many Nepalese and Tibetans in the area, and just for that.

One of the best dishes they used to have there were spinach and cheese momos, they got rid of it. That dish was also one of the things that made it unique and better than alot of the momo places i have been to. They have the chicken momos, which are decent, the beef one is meh. They also got rid of the mixed momos option. For the mains: Pad gra prao is decent but too salty, spicy but not too spicy. Chicken with chili, it has good heat, but that's all. The flavor is just weird, the chicken is nice and tender, but the sauce tastes weird as if they put too much corn starch in it and mixed in some weird smoke flavor. Not a fan. Overall: may come back in another year to see if they added the spinach and cheese momos back, at the same time, I'm gonna find a new go to place nearby.
