If you like specialty markets then you will LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. Specializing, or rather a high concentration in Portuguese foods and staples this place is pretty damn interesting to walk into. Ever had fava nuts? Ha! Me either until I went here and now they are one of my alltime favorite snacks. Ever heard of Sumol? Me either until I went here. It's a soda that is kind of like orangina only sweeter. About 40 different kinds of port. Go figure. Salted cod. Got it. Growing up, an authentic New England clam boil was always treasured. This means fresh steamer clams, fresh potatoes, and chourizo and linguica. The last two, authentic Portuguese sausages, are rare. Oh, one can buy relative crap by the same name in the local supermarket, but from Chaves... Ah the real thing. Hard to describe, but they will deliver to you, vacuum packed, the real deal! This place is MONEY. I went in on a recommendation to find some good Portuguese sweet bread, and found so much more. Lots of good stuff in here - different breads, port, wine, cheese. They also have a pretty amazing fresh meat and fish section, definitely better than the average supermarket. If you're around Fall River definitely stop here, there are all kinds of different goodies to pick up, lots of unique imported foods, and definitely some things you're going to want to try. read more

A lot of my family grew up in Fall River and when I took my wife to visit St. Ann's Church and Shrine, we took a stroll down Columbia St. When she walked in Chaves, her eyes took on that kid on Christmas morning look. The market itself is clean, well-lit, and well stocked but it is the fresh foods and meat department that is the gem. The fish looked flawless - one could have easily imagined it swimming in the Atlantic mere hours ago. The selection of Portuguese cheese was excellent and the butcher was eager to share his knowledge ... and samples. The chourico and linguica were made on site...actually, behind the counter. It tasted as good as it looked and the prices were quite reasonable for food of that quality. My wife loved this market so much I won't be surprised if she doesn't want to move. She exclaimed that if we lived closer, she would never shop anywhere else. read more

I live in FL so anything I order must be shipped. Chaves has a good selection of items in their online store and their prices are fair. The only problem is the person in their store who handles the online orders. She is short tempered, impatient and has a fresh mouth. I won't be ordering from them again. read more

Stupid me, thought I could come in here and find some cheese for a party I was having when my local cheese shop was closed. Not so much. There's a small variety of Portuguese cheese to choose from, but the ones I got were all bland and the guy behind the counter couldn't tell me the difference between any of them. ordered 2 pounds of cheese to be shipped to California. it was shipped in a plain box, no dry ice. it arrived melted and ruined. contacted the market and they say it was shipped in accordance with their policy, and if I want to send back any unopened items it was on me. their policy only talks about shipping sausage in dry ice. no mention of cheese. I didn't ask for a refund my only request was that they send another order in styrofoam and dry ice which I would pay for, they refused my request. poor customer service and a poorly written shipping policy. read more

Heck yes to everything fresh . After watching the Food Inc documentary I am freaked out by fillers in hamburgers. All of their meat, fish and cheese are so fresh. Just the look of the ground hamburger is notibly different (in a good way) than anything that you could ever buy at Stop and Shop. On Saturday and Sundays there is a line of people waiting for the rotisary chickens. After trying one, the wait was so worth it. Plus the meat counter is right near the wine and spirits so taking a stroll down those isles kills time and saves you a trip to the package store. I LOVE CHAVES!!! this place is amazing! I've been a long time costomer of Chaves Market. My Vavo use to take me when I was a little girl and now I take my little girl there too. I live in groton CT and I definitley don't mind taking the 45-55 minute drive to Chaves because everything is so good. they have a wonderful selection of breads, cheeses, meats, seafood, wine, and so much more. They have chorizo that is the BEST i've ever had! I can tell you that I will definitley be a loyal chaves costomer for YEARS to come! read more

There are some things I like at Chaves but the chorizo is not one. I thought the chorizo tasted old ;not fresh. I will get m,y chorizo at Michaels Provisions or at Portugalia...which carries Michaels chorizo. read more

They sell already made food. Their chicken wings are so good, better than pizza places in the city. They sell plenty of imported Portuguese food, all kinds of wine, anything you can think of from a convenience store. Glad they sell Milaneza Pasta from Portugal it's my favorite better than Italian pasta. Love this place have been coming here since I was a baby. Place is beautiful after they remodeled. read more
