I went to this place months ago to get a custom frame for a drawing I purchased while on vacation. The customer service was great. They measured my photo, helped me choose a frame, created the frame, and put in the nice paper and wire backing within 30 minutes. Only $50. What made me to finally review this place was that I recently watched a video about someone complaining how it costed hundreds of dollars to get a simple custom frame. I was thinking that must suck to not be so close to Cheap Pete's. The people giving low reviews because of the price must either had a crazy good hook up or be out of touch with how much things cost nowadays. I checked other places online and it was like $150 for the same job, so this was a great deal for me. read more

This was my first time having something custom framed - a 9x12" painting on paper by a local artist. I came to the shop at first thinking I'll probably just buy a frame off the shelf, and spent a lot of time comparing different options. Then I saw their custom framing samples on the wall and liked this ornate one with a metallic gold finish. So I decided to get it custom framed based on that frame sample. I paid and I was told it would take about 2 weeks to do the job & it ended up being ready a couple days early. I just picked it up and unfortunately I was pretty disappointed. Mostly because the finish of the frame was totally different from the sample I chose in store. It was really dull compared to the metallic gold finish of the store sample. Looking at them next to each other, there was clearly a huge difference between the finish of the sample in store and the frame I got (see photo). Also, there were pretty obvious gaps where the top two corners of the frame are joined (see photo). When I asked about this I was told this is normal because the pieces are joined together so there is always a possibility of gaps..? But I think if they are cut at the correct angle and joined properly then there shouldn't be such obvious gaps. It's supposed to be a professional framing so I don't see why they try to justify obvious flaws. The cost of the framing was a little over $100 and they refunded me about $60, the cost of the frame, not including labor, which I think is fair since the frame was not what I expected. I think they need better quality control and if the frame they get from the supplier is so different from the sample the customer chose, I understand that is not their fault, but that's something they should take the time to check and let the customer know to see if they are ok with it before moving forward. Especially since they told me this is not the first time that has happened. The back of the frame has the framer's initials and also the initials of the person who did a quality check, so clearly they checked and thought the flawed corners and very different finish were ok, or didn't notice. Also the description the associate wrote for my artwork, which I saw on the first receipt, pick-up email, and finished product label was "Painting of woman black Onion hair gold neck". LOL personally I think it's a beautiful painting and if you think the hair looks like an onion maybe you should keep that to yourself. I hope they don't describe other items like people's family photos they bring in for framing in such a silly way. It would be more professional to describe things objectively. I ended up sponging/painting on some gold acrylic paint on the frame myself and that turned out pretty well. Overall I don't think I'll use them again for custom framing since I can't be sure the frame will look like the sample and also the flawed craftsmanship is not what I expect from a professional framing. If I knew this would be my experience, I would have just bought a simple gold frame off the shelf rather than pay more and wait 2 weeks for custom framing just to be disappointed. read more

I took my mom here to get a very old photo portrait of my late dad (when he was 2 yrs old in 1929) reframed. Old frame was falling apart. We worked with Beth who was very attentive and intuitive to what my mom wanted, which was to update the framing and not spend a fortune. She resized the old portrait matting, added a new mat and helped my mom with picking out a frame that would accentuate the portrait and match her decor in her new apartment. I came in to find a frame. I was hoping I'd be able to walk out with a pre made frame. The man measured my print and said it was an unusual size that they don't have. He did not offer me any suggestions or alternatives. He basically just said Nope no one makes this size, thanks for stopping by. I walked around the shop to look at other sizes to see if I could make something work. A VERY average plain black wood frame was over 50 dollars. I just walked out feeling slightly annoyed that I was made to feel like I had interrupted him. I went home and looked on Amazon and found exactly what I was looking for and it was a fraction of the cost of the frame I looked at that wouldn't have fit right. It was also very well packaged! A+ experience on Amazon! I won't bother with Cheap Pete's ever again. Cheap Pete's is not cheap, their selection is basic and employees not at all helpful or pleasant. read more

Convenient and well stocked. If you need a frame or matting, this is the place. Not the place to frame an expensive painting but great for basic needs. I was quite disappointed when I went in with a frame I recently purchased at Cheap Pete's and asked them to put the hanging wire on the back for me as I have arthritic fingers and I'm a Senior. They charged me $5.00-. plus tax. I consider that poor customer service and poor judgment. It could have simply been a favor that took a few minutes and I would have left with a good feeling about their service. But that didn't happen. After years of procrastination, my husband and I were determined to get a family gallery wall up before Thanksgiving. We knew that we didn't want the standard all black or white photo wall that you see everywhere. I was determined that we would have a wall that looked thoughtfully put together and definitely not all the same . We were greeted by Sanaa as we browsed through the store. We told her our idea and had already chosen a couple of frames ourselves. She then cleared a table in the framing area and helped us choose additional frames and lay out a design to get a visual of what our wall would look like. Then it came time for picking out mats. We had a ton of fun playing with the different shades of neutral colors with each frame. We appreciated that she was such a good listener to what we wanted and did it try to impose her opinions too strongly on us. We came home, printed our photos, inserted them and hung it up just like we laid out at the store and wow....I must say our wall looks beautiful and professionally done. I did have to go back to Pete's the next day to have a few custom mats cut and Sanaa was the gal to help me again. My husband accidentally broke the glass on one of my 80s era serigraphs from Palm Springs. He went here to ask if they could replace the glass. How about Pete's moderately priced frames? I went in here paroosing for some inexpensive frames. My Associates Degree and awesome Neil Klemz (look him up) picture are not up because well, I'm just too lazy and cheap. That and I really hate measuring, I dunno... it's a personal problem. I got a hello, but the woman seemed more interested in a conversation with her co-worker. Not that I had any questions mind you, but a show of caring is always nice. They had some awesome frames though. Shadow boxes, and silver toned, some of my faves. And a really good selection. But for some place called Cheap Pete's, I expected ultra low, bottom of the barrel prices. Truthfully I think Ross and sales at Rite Aid beat their prices out the door. So yes, I'm coming back. I'm slowly moving some of my household stuff over to Gayle's house and donating other things that I know won't fit or be jointly appreciated in our combined home. A few weeks ago, I hauled my cat structure over and made the mistake of putting an art piece (and one of Gayle's favourites) within the same load. After an initial load shift, the frame glass broke, but thankfully spared the underlying art. I am super pleased with Cheap Pete's in Walnut Creek. From the moment I walked in to request a quote on some custom framing, to the time I picked up my finished pieces, the staff were friendly, professional and amazing. I brought in two giclee's that I purchased last year at the Sausalito Art Festival but didn't want to get too fancy with them. Greeted immediately, I was then shown frames in the price point I was looking for and got some great suggestions on the color and style to match my prints. Their prices are competitive with big box stores that happen to have a frame shop in them, but at Cheap Pete's you actually work with someone who is a professional framer. They are extremely knowledgable, don't push services or features on you that you don't need and have a great eye for design. Cheap Pete's will also fit your artwork in to pre-made, standard size frames-whether you bought the frame from them or it's your own. There is a modest fitting charge but worth it. Love Love Love this place! I've been in overdrive and buying concert posters. Some that I've gone too, but some that have been the band I love that are on tour and put out cool limited posters on each stop. When I came in with my stash that desperately needed framing, one in particular caught the clerk's eye even before I unrolled it. I had just gone to a Black Keys Concert a week before, and when he saw the rolled up yellowish parched paper he said "is that a Black Key's poster from the Oakland show the other night"? And I'd already told him coming in being a novice I was looking for a cheap way to mount them on my wall hoping to just put them on foam board. So I say sheeply "Yes", he say's "theres no way I'm letting you mount that on foam board, I went to that concert and didn't get one of those posters and I could kick myself. I went on Ebay the next day and they were going for triple the price"! Whoa! Clerk "this is what you are gonna do because it's signed and numbered, we have these inexpensive frames that you can just drop it into to preserve it". Oh and the other 5 that I had, all signed and numbered too....ran home and immediately checked out Ebay. Some were going for upwards of $100+, here I paid $30. Nice. So now for $20 for basic black frames, I have a very cool collection of Black Keys, Decemberists, Gogol Bordello, and a few older posters (already framed for an arm and a leg but I finally hung, Haight Ashbury Street Fair Contest Posters) and now my living room looks rockin' cool! And for all those other posters I didn't have to spend hundreds of dollars, and the simple black frames look great. Plus everyone is super nice and helpful. Oh and also if you ever go to the Fillmore and get those freebie posters they actually have "fillmore size frames", perfect! I almost forgot in all my excitement talk about the cheapie frames, we took a panoramic photo of NYC we purchased while in NYC (duh) and had it framed their in a gorgeous long frame for a better quote than Aaron brothers and it turned out lovely. read more

Service here is awesome! They are very helpful and try to accommodate your budget. I don't remember the guys name, but he was a big tall guy with long dark hair. He was so patient and helpful in suggesting mat colors and frames for a 3 piece watercolor artwork I bought off the street in Italy. They didn't have a frame that exactly fit the odd size, but he tried to give me frame & mat options based on what they did have in store. In the end I had to order something online, but I later went back to get a new mat made, and another guy helped me who was also very helpful in teaching me how to tape the pieces onto my new mat. I used to love cheap Pete's. I've been a customer of theirs for a few years, visiting both the sf store (when I lived there), and the walnut creek store. I'm quite disappointed with the customer service I received today. I'm not expecting people to go out of their way for a 7 month pregnant lady pushing a stroller with a toddler in it and carrying multiple prints, frames and mats, but I do expect the same customer service someone else receives. After witnessing the customer in front of me paying for their frame and having the salesperson INSIST that they help her to her car I thought "awesome, I can totally use all the help I can get!" once that salesperson came back and rang me up their was no offer to assist me to my car...once again I'm very pregnant, pushing a stroller and purchased not just 1, but 2 large frames, mats, along with the prints I came in with. I can't help but to be upset at the fact that the customer was able bodied, young and more than willing to take her recently purchased frame to her car on her own but finally accepted the salesperson's insistence that she be assisted. Something is definately wrong with this picture. I will not shop at cheap Pete's in the future. read more

First off, this would be a one star review, but the last two employees who helped me were both super helpful and professional, which bumps this up one star. In spite of the good service I personally received, I'm giving this place a low rating and will personally never shop at this location again due to the absolutely abysmal experience inflicted on another customer by a raging jerk of an employee. It was so bad that if I hadn't already been in the middle of getting my order completed, I would have walked out. In the short time I was in the store (less than ten minutes), this employee ripped into the customer he was "helping", berating him when the customer offered to watch what the employee was grudgingly doing to help because, (paraphrasing only slightly here) "it's 2016, I don't know you, there's glass and you could get cut and it's a liability issue" and yelling at him about possibly ruining someone else's art (I believe it was the piece the customer was trying to get framed, in which case it was the customers to ruin. If not, it was something one of the employees had left lying out on a counter and not really the fault of the customer). The entire time, the poor customer was pretty laid back and reasonable when he probably should have simply punched the guy in the face. It got better though, when Angry McJerkface stormed off to the back and began cursing and yelling at a coworker loudly enough that the entire store could hear. At some point, the coworker must have attempted to reply and was told at high volume to "shut the f*ck up." This was just a super professional guy all the way around, and I'm can only assume he must be someone who can't be fired with that customer facing attitude. Anyway, I'll be taking all future frame purchasing, matting and framing, etc. business elsewhere due to an abusive, vitriolic employee. read more

I finally decided to frame some of my Fillmore Posters from sold-out shows. I came to Cheap Pete's for their premade Rock Poster frames. Most of my posters are 13" x 19", but a few of them are 12" x 19." They had ready-made frames for each size. However, they only had 1 of their proper "Filmore Poster Frames" in-stock. Their next shipment is not due until another 3 or 4 weeks, so the nice worker offered to call around for an in-store transfer between one of their other locations. Now that's customer service.
