This is a comment on Checkmark Painting. They painted our house, interior and exterior. Every time we talked to Mark, he lied to us. He is a total con man. His crew had very little skill, no pride of work. They have no first class painter. If you are thinking of them, I advise you to try a different company. They rehung doors upside and couldn't figure out why they didn't fit. Everything they did was nonprofessional. We discussed in advance how we wanted nails pulled and cracks caulked, especially around the beams and ceiling, to give a smooth appearance. There was no caulking in advance. Additionally, they were sloppy with the paint. We have gaps in the paint in a couple of spots, and several places where paint dripped or spread onto floors, toilet seat, cabinets, etc. Photos attached show the result. read more

The owner made all kinds of promises but refused to put anything in writing. That was our first red flag. The second was the patronizing tone he took with my wife when she called with questions. "Let me talk to your husband about it", as if my wife is incompetent or unintelligent. read more

Our experience with Checkmark Painting for an exterior paint job was terrific. Mark was helpful with explanations throughout the bidding process. We got other bids that would do less for less money or less for more money so we went with Checkmark! Emily was responsive and helpful in the contracting process. Archie was a delight and did a fantastic job repairing our deck. Becca was attentive to details and easy to communicate with. The crew worked fast and accurately. We hired Checkmark Painting on a referral. Well, we have had nothing but difficulties. I wish we had read the reviews here prior to using them. They never finished the touch up work needed from the "cutting-in" that they did not finish. They never completed our doors, (this was a month after the initial interior paint.) Mark over promised and way under delivered. When we contacted him to reimburse us for the work not completed, he decided that we needed to provide him with hours worked, pictures etc. He had to know what amount of his bid covered the doors and should have just refunded that. This guy was very poor and gave my spouse a hard time when she called his work into question. I am going to make it my mission to tell everyone I know to avoid this company. read more

Mark the owner of this company is a real piece of work. Treats all of his employees like dirt. Has a huge ego like he's God's gift to painting. Has extremely poor communication skills. Have seen talk down to his customers after they were unhappy with the work that was done and rather than just saying "okay I'll fix that" and aiming to please his customers he instead talks to them like they're trash and trying to get over on him. I think he suffers from delusions of grandeur and extreme paranoia, probably an ex meth addict. Choose someone else for your painting needs. read more

This company was absolutely amazing!!! Quick response and completely detailed oriented!! The did our entire inside of our house in 2 days!! It is gorgeous! We used Checkmark Painting after being referred to him by our realtor. We were preparing our house inside and out to sell and our realtor had told us Mark was extremely professional and great quality for the price. We met with Mark to walk through what was needed and everything seemed as expected. He had told us our furniture needed to be moved to the center of each room and they would drape everything to protect it as they painted. When the job was completed, his crew left and there was a layer of dust on EVERYTHING, including our upholstered furniture and every surface. There was paint splatter on things like kitchen appliances, desks, the floor, etc. We tried to contact Mark to discuss and sent an email to them with photos of the state of the home but nobody responded. When we finally got in touch with Mark (through our realtor) to ask him why we had not received any response to our inquiries of how to handle this situation, he told me he doesn't "bother reading emails" so he didn't know anything about it. He didn't believe us and wanted to come see our home - this would've been perfect except that this was a week AFTER this happened and we had already taken hours and a cleaner hired by our realtor to clean up as best we could. This is why we had taken photos and sent them immediately after this happened. He also tried to say it was our fault for not completely removing the furniture from the home. When we reminded him that we did exactly as he stated, he then told us the thick layer of dust was expected, even with draping. The entire conversation was ridiculous. When we tried to explain that this is not at all what we expected for a finished product and has not been our experience with painters in the past, he got angry, told us to "F*** off", and hung up on us. In the end, our realtor dealt with him. We have used painters many times and this is by far the poorest quality and professionalism we have encountered. I would not recommend him or his company to anyone in the area as I am sure there are more qualified "professionals" that will do the job as expected for less cost. read more

I'm a general contractor and I was looking for access to a property I'm working on in Springfield. I pulled over to look at my map knowing I was close to my Destiination. Immediately after pulling up to what I thought was the right building, I called my contact info looking for clarification on where to go. The self-proclaimed owner of the building and Company stormed up to my truck while I was on the phone and choose to scream at me through the windows that I needed to leave. I got off the phone and addressed his concerns and asked politely to be respected. I took a short video of this man verbally abusing me all the way until I drove off his property. I don't recommend his services or his company services based upon my interactions today. My company is Tyler Whelchel Construction ccb#216795 and I have plenty of sub contractors that would never engage in such an unprofessional manner no mater the situation. read more

I do not recommend this company for painting. Yes, they were quick to respond prior to the job but once it was done and we had some issue we never heard back. They tried to squeeze us in between the weather changing but I was concerned with the quality of the weather was bad but I went with their professional opinion and let the do the job when they did it. Paint didn't dry well and the next morning the outside wall was still wet. During the night it rained and caused them yo have to do touch ups. After the job was done I noticed they didn't do any of the patchwork or caulking that was in the bid and just painted over some exterior flaws. Also we noticed some paint peeling and after contacts the they never got back to us. Yes our house looks good but we will see how it lasts. Already noticed the gutters peeling where the gutter max light clips go. For a price I paid I expected better. Will need to fix things myself when the weather gets better. read more

I urge you not to use this company. When confronted with mistakes the owner quickly gets angry and defensive. Not once did he apologize when I pointed out errors made by his crew, just gave excuses. I was over charged by this company for the work provided. I will not blame his crew, because they work under the guidance of their boss Mark. Before the work began Mark said he was going to be overseeing this job and I saw him one time for about 10 minutes during the entire painting process. I was not there during the final walk through when the payment was given to him. I started noticing a lot of small errors, poor trim lines, overspray, parts they did not paint at all. When I had a chance to share my thoughts and explain these mistakes to Mark all he did was get offended and defensive. Mark is highly unprofessional and can not be criticized for the work he or his crew has done. I have read reviews on this company and I am amazed that they get 5 stars. Okay, I've had Mark do several jobs for me, and he does a great job. In the last job, there was a bit of miscommunication, but I think that was my responsibility. Well to begin we were not only searching for interior but exterior painting as well.After the interior failure we of course can't see them doing the exterior. Once the crew left upon closer examination I found many nail holes that were not filled and even missed spots.I was suspicious about the time they spent here considering we contracted for two coats of painting and only one of the painters remained on site for the entire day.Now I know they didn't as the high grade Sherwin Williams paint we were promised would not rub off revealing the past paint when I hardly wipe down to remove a scuff.I really thought the owner was trustworthy but the crew failed. read more

The crew was courteous and did an OK job. They made a few mistakes, but remedied them right away. However, they left the job with a few issues. There was a Rock-star can on a window sill. There were a number of items removed and not reinstalled; a trim piece, a curtain, an air intake vent cover, and closet door knobs. The inside edges of two closet doors were not painted and another edge of the closet door didn't get a second coating. Mark remedied these issues during the post job walk through. Mark was tolerable to work with until he realized that I didn't have a check or enough cash for him on the spot to pay for the entire job. This was my mistake. I didn't understand that expectation. I apologized and offered to pay partly in cash and the rest by a check in the mail. Mark then lectured me and treated me as if I were a child. He was very angry and a complete ass. In the end he wouldn't even take the cash. No, I take that back, he wouldn't give me a receipt for the cash so I wouldn't give him the cash. He then stormed off and said just send me a damn check. He then called my wife and lectured her. No customer should ever be treated the way he treated us. I read an earlier rating by Kaia that should've been a red flag, but I was in a time crunch and didn't have another option but to use him. I believe everything Kaia said.
