Went tonight for dinner and got take out.we Got 2 of the fish platters with fries and onion rings. The fish was super tough and chewy. The fries were okay.. they were soggy. And the onion rings were the only thing that was edible. We didn't get our second set of onion rings, we got someone else's pan fried oysters and cocktail sauce. Checks is a Germantown tradition- great fried fish, oysters (pan fried), chili, burgers, and home cooked classics. Checks is one of the few places in town you can get pan fried or rolled oysters with a beer that are delicious and a fair price in town. If it's cold or rainy chili and a grilled cheese is my go to. Perfect weather for a huge bowl of chili. I ordered mine with the fixin's onions, noodles and cheese. We were able to watch the UofL game. What can I say every time I stop by and bring new friends with me they always say I can't believe I haven't been here before. I tried a limited choice of salmon patties with the always tasty German potato salad and slaw. My friend tried the buffalo chicken sandwich and found it to be a good choice. We had a large group (Approx. 40) and they situated us in their upper room (2023). What a great job they did! The food was fantastic. Their Chili is really good, and everything on the menu was involved/tried in our large group, and everyone was happy! Over the years, I've been to this establishment dozens of times, and I've always loved the simplicity of their food as well as their level of customer service. Due to Covid-19, today has been termed Takeout Tuesday, and for that, we decided to visit a couple of breweries and Check's for dinner. For the other spots, we called ahead or ordered online, but we decided to order when we got to Check's even though those options were also available. My partner went inside to order, while I went to Monnik's for beer and then waited outside. There seemed to be a slow, but steady stream of patrons going in and out for the same purpose, and it wasn't long before we grabbed our food and headed home. The food was carefully packaged in styrofoam containers that were stacked in plastic bags and came with utensils and napkins. My order was perfect. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and a side of onion rings, while he ordered the fried chicken livers with a side of potato salad and broccoli cheese casserole. All sides were neatly packaged, and each had sauces to accompany the meals. Food was just as good as when sat inside to eat it there, and as always, friendly customer service and food expectations were met. This local establishment is definitely a keeper. Classic neighborhood diner. I've been going here all my life, just as my parents, and grandparents before me. In the 30 years I've been going there it's grown from a small dive bar to what it is today. The best part is that it hasn't lost its charm. The chili is always good no matter the time of the year! Go for the stories, the history, the food and the sprawling list of drafts and bourbon. You cannot go wrong. It's also a perfect place to spend some time waiting for Derby City Chop Shop barber. Crazy that I never heard of Checks until my coworkers suggested it for lunch. It was very busy during lunch, but it didn't take long for us to get our order. I ordered the fried cod sandwich with fries. You get two nice pieces of cod. I was kind of disappointed because everyone at the table food looked good, but my fish was over fried. The fish was too hard. The fries were good. They have seasonings on the table, so I sprinkled a little seasoning on them, and they were good to go. Although my fish didn't turn out good. Terrible. $65.00 for a child's dinner, fish sandwich & fish dinner. The menu describes the fish dinner as a "generous portion of fish" with two sides. The dinner arrived with 2 pieces of "fish", curled up, all breading, with no meat inside. It was like eating breaded rubber. After waiting in line again, I was told they would bring out 2 more pieces of fish. They sent out 2 more pieces just like the first ones. Pathetic. What a waste of time and money. Check's is a friendly, neighborhood bar. I live within walking distance, so I like being able to just walk over whenever I don't feel like cooking. They serve great comfort food at really reasonable prices. I particularly love the BLT with extra bacon. Their chili is also great. They've got a good selection of alcohol & the staff is always friendly. You have to order food & drinks at the bar. It can get a little annoying if you need a refill or water or soda because you have to stand in (the sometimes long) line. Otherwise, this place is great. They've got trivia one night, karaoke another, drink specials, etc. You're not going to get mind-blowingly good food but it's comfortable, inexpensive and friendly. read more

This is one of those places in Louisville, where you really feel like you're part of the family from the second you walk in. There are so many places in the city that are stuffy, overcrowded, and overcharge for food, but everyone fits right in at Check's, and the prices are great. Sure, as some have pointed out, if you get there during a lunch rush, you might be waiting a while, but they bring the food to you, and you can watch tv while you're there. The menu has all the diner classics, burgers dogs, chili, etc. We went with the club sandwich and the pork tenderloin sandwich. There aren't a ton of restaurants around here doing a bare bones pork tenderloin sandwich, but of the ones that do, Check's is likely the best. Perfectly spiced and breaded. I'm a long time local been coming here a few times a year for 30 years. I love the people and atmosphere, but at least what I ordered today was mediocre at best. I got the roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. The mashed potatoes where very dry needed butter or something tasted straight from a box. The gravy was okay but I had better. There was a decent amount of beef, but it was a mixture of tuff pieces and okay ones. The macaroni was fine and creamy but very bland with very little cheese flavor. The tenders themselves are huge so polishing this meal off as been slightly tough. Got these to go. The turn around was quick and the staff is just as down home friendly as you'd hope for being in Germantown. Longtime resident of the neighborhood went in this past Tuesday before 5:00pm and ordered two 2 piece fish sandwiches and 4 orders of fries to go. Roughly $40 worth of food. Not overly crowded, a lot of regulars. Sat down to wait on my food. Everyone that came in after me and then some ordered and got their food within 10-15 minutes max. Twenty minutes into my wait I asked the bartender what happened to my order - she sent someone back there to check who promptly returned and said "Oh their just waiting on fries." Which I accepted even though I had seen a pork tenderloin with fries come out and a cheeseburger with fries x2 come out. Twenty minutes later a very nice customer asked another person about my order and was told their working on it now. Fifty minutes in I get my order and got home to taste mediocre fish. Lesson learned Check's - last time I spend good money and time for crummy food & service. read more

Check's where everybody knows your name. Literally I was the only one in the long line that they didn't know. It was definitely a family atmosphere with seating outside, small bar and large dining room with TVs surrounding, an upstairs space. Known for their chili, fish, and oysters. I went with the chili and hit the spot. I'm ready for fall now. The double cheeseburger rocked and was right what I was desiring from Check's. Stopped in during the annual walk. The staff was working hard and very polite! It stayed busy the entire time but they didn't miss a beat. We had the bean soup and split the Roast beef sandwich. The German potato salad didn't stand a chance - I'm pretty sure my husband took one bite and swallowed the entire serving! The mashed and gravy were delicious! Sitting there full as could be but watching the food come out made us think we could fit more food in our belly! Back to the counter to order dessert! He came back with a bowl of chili!!! I was expecting derby pie! In between bites he's going on and on about the beer choices! Check's is fine for what it is. It's a local establishment that gets frequented by blue-collared folk in their 40s and 50s. And that's completely fine. To be honest, as I was walking through, I was looking at the food everyone was eating, and I was making a mental note that I shall return to consume said food. Looked good. The beer is normal. I didn't see anything that particularly stood out. If you like beer, I'd probably go across the street and get a beer from there. But if you're happy with Bud and Miller, etc., you'll like Check's fine. Karaoke. Pretty bad karaoke. Some of the worst I've ever heard. Which makes it really good, actually. But you can only take that ish in doses, KNOWWHATIMSAYIN. I've heard that Check's is THE PLACE for lunch. I cannot comment. I wish I could. I'll have to make an effort to get around to it. The beer selection was adequate, the service was friendly, and I was too intoxicated to know anything about the food besides that I have eaten the food and I did not die. I am here. The last two times I ordered Postmates from Checks, the order has been horrible. First, I've never gotten a single condiment, piece of plastic silverware, even a napkin in any of my bags of food. The food doesn't have a single topping or anything - if you get a burger it will be dried patty, two plain buns, nothing more. But to beat all, both times that I ordered from Checks they left out about 1/3 of the total order. And when I complain through Postmates I get a "sorry you had to order more food elsewhere and pay an additional delivery fee for that food. We will not refund you but we will credit your account and you must overpay for another meal from us within 15 days to get that credit." Checks is super cheap food for a reason...the quality is unacceptable and you're likely not to get half of what you pay for. read more

So this was a nice looking local spot. Nothing special about the burger. You can get that at any pub. The beer was cold, the people were friendly and you can definitely tell it was for locals. I didn't feel unwelcome, just wasn't for me. If you wanna watch some sports and hang out and have a beer. Give it a try. read more
