So I was in town for training, was craving some chinese food, and this was the closest thing to the hotel I didn't feel like driving.I was already tired from a long day looked at the.Reviews, nothing stood out on the.Reviews, they looked mediocre at best.I decided to give it a try anyways. So I walked in the location.There wasn't very many people in there.There was two employees, both of them were on the computers.They pretty much ignored me for a couple of minutes before they decided to come.And help me.I looked over the menu fairly quickly.I already knew what I wanted.I wanted the combination fried rice.I noticed that it's said that the fried rice had scallops in it had never tried it before.So decided to give it a try.I was sadly disappointed. First off, I'm gonna start with. I've had scallops in the past and the scallops that they had in there or whatever they where were extremely fishy to the point of the entire Fried Rice tasted like fish. I ate the majority of the Fried Rice. It left an oily fishy taste in my mouth. I was just so hungry. I ate it and I fell asleep. I noticed that I started getting rumble guts in the middle of the night and yeah, you can figure it out from there. I think next time I'll probably steer clear of this place.And I do come to brian college station quite a bit after I ate there.The next night, one of the guys told me that I shouldn't have eaten there. Just walking in the location didn't look very clean.Look kinda unkepped. Would I ever come back? Probably not more like, definitely not. If you want to try it, try it out. Maybe I just had a bad experience.But yeah it wasn't for me. Combo fried rice 1 outa 10 just nasty fishy taste i have never had scallops in Fried Rice. Solid Chinese food. The garlic chicken is in a light sauce and the vegetables are crunchy and fresh. The side of fried rice was hot and a heaping portion of the orange chicken is in a sweet and tangy sauce and has a great crisp. read more

I am not an expert on Chinese cuisine, but I have lived in China and eaten in hundreds of Chinese restaurants and Chef Cao's is top tier. With very fresh ingredients, authentic recipes that stand out from the norm and very fair prices, I can't recommend these restaurants more highly. read more

I stopped here quickly before catching my flight and took advantage of a lunch special. I got wonton soup and shrimp/ chicken with brococoli and fried rice. Soup didn't come with the lunch special, so don't expect it, and it wasn't worth the additional purchase. Just 2 little wontons in broth, no onions, no taste, no nothing. Very blah. The brococoli dish was good, but drowning in brown sauce which made it salty as I don't know what! I got a separate plate in an attempt to remove some of the sauce, but still left with a headache. MAJOR MAJOR IMPROVEMENT AT CHEF CAOS. * * * Backstory. Chef Cao's has been in College Station since forever. College Station for most of its history had a very traditional Texas population which did not like "strange" food. So Chinese restaurants had to cater to that. They served American Chinese. Chef Cao's was a place you would go for Broccoli Beef and Wonton Soup. * * * As College Station and the University has grown, There has been an ever increasing influx of Chinese graduate students, Chinese professors - and among those who stay in the community - Chinese professionals. These people know what the good stuff is. They will not settle for sweet and sour pork. In some cases, some restaurants had a "special menu" either oral or written that they would share with their more sophisticated Chinese customers. But increasingly, Chinese restaurants are now able to put "real" Chinese food on the menu they show to everybody and not have the rest of the world freak out. They now have pork blood. They now have fungus salad. They now put pig intestines in the dry pot. They now have pig's feet. (Multiple versions of the latter). There is nothing but good in all of this. * * * I had the Mala pig's feet - which is essentially a straight up Szechuan style presentation. Hot chili oil in quantity, ginger in quantity, garlic, hot peppers, white peppercorns. You know the drill. Could this dish compete with the best Vancouver or Hong Kong has to offer? Probably not. But for College Station, the dish was freaking amazing. * * * True Chinese dishes are showing up in other locations in the Brazos Valley. The world may be down with COVID. The red staters may be fighting the blue staters. We may still get thirty robocalls a day. But there is now some seriously good Chinese food in Bryan College Station. I'm not sure why this Chef Cao's gets as much flack as it does, but it's one of my favorite to go places. I've ordered here like a fair amount and it was last year where I really had to order takeout from them a lot. I used the online ordering system and had no issues with pick up this time or any of the previous times as of right now. The prices at Chef Cao's for lunch is ridiculously cheap like it's a steal because they give you much rice for the price (5-8$ /dish generally) and the food I get is consistently filling and good (to me at least). I was really full after eating the wonton soup crab puffs and half of the scallops and black beans. I want to mention that the crab puffs were bigger than I thought and one of my favorites eat. The fried pastry (wrapper???) is light and I liked the creaminess of the filling. My sister got her share of my noodles and she really enjoyed it. There's a pretty large variety on the menu and I try to get something different every time to try it out and sometimes it is a miss, but the good outweighs the bad a lot. Overall, really great place for take out, cheap prices, quick, and lots of great food. I'm surprised at the low ratings because we enjoyed Chef Cao's a lot, and we are fairly experienced with Chinese food in the states. Everything was fresh, seasoning and spices were on point, and it was a good value for the money. We started with Sizzling Rice Soup (it didn't sizzle, to our disappointment, but it was flavorful and full of meats and veggies in a delicious broth). The pork and tofu was terrific, quite spicy and layered with flavor. Happy Family was comforting and mellow (lots of meat) and the Roast Duck had this amazing crispy skin and succulent interior. The lunch specials are the best deal but everything is priced reasonably. I will definitely return. read more

We hadn't had take-out Chinese in months, and spouse had an appointment nearby so I ordered for pickup. Meal was ready quickly, and traveled well the 25 minutes home. The hot and sour soup was more hot than sour. Seems most Asian places do this now, and I prefer a more sour preparation. Still, it was good, with the mushrooms almost shaved thin, and not overpowering the rest of the ingredients. A tablespoon of wine vinegar can fix the balance at my table, but I wish I didn't have to do that. Likewise the sweet and sour was more sweet than sour. Everyone has preferences as to balance, and I'd have liked a bit less sweet. Fried rice was excellent. Egg rolls excellent, and appreciated. Spouse is allergic to shellfish, and many places put shrimp in their eggrolls. These are purely vegetarian. Portion sizes excellent - meaning I had enough for lunch the next day - and price well within reason. Definitely will return. read more
