    Char kuey teow
    Sasha L.

Recently moved to Kensington, and I think I've found my favorite Malaysian restaurant. Their menu boosts an array of Malaysian local favorites at affordable prices (in comparison to other good Malaysian eateries in Melbourne). I am normally a bit skeptical of restaurants that over deliver (too many dishes on the menu) but lack on quality. Nonetheless, Chef Lagenda delivered. I had a hard time selecting my order; we ended up with three mains between both of us - char kuey teow, assam laksa and hainanese chicken rice. We couldn't get enough of all three dishes. The Char Kuey Teow is punched with flavour (I think I tasted lard - Mmmm) and has chinese sausage and generous serving of prawns and bean sprouts. The assam laksa is made the way I always remembered (hey! The chef is from my hometown, Ipoh), and enough fish in the broth. The chicken rice aced in both taste and price, to the point where my partner said he'll even drop by daily to grab it as takeaway for lunch. Without a doubt, I will definitely be making more visits to Chef Lagenda. I even have a personal goal to try everything on the menu!

Chef Lagenda must have jealousy issues, sharing a wall with one of Melbourne's most popular cheap-eat restaurants, Laksa King. For months I had walked straight past this restaurant on my way to Laksa King, never stopping to consider trying it out. Why would I? ...Surely it could never compare! But when a friend of mine, who suffers from an endless list of food allergies, arranged a dinner at Chef Lagenda (due to it's apparently more attuned ability to cater for people in her position), I went along with a sense of curiosity and a slight disappointment that I wasn't going next door. However, I have to say that the food at Chef Lagenda proved all of my pre-conceptions wrong. I actually found most of the dishes that we ordered to be SUPERIOR to Laksa King (granted, we didn't order Laksa). The staff were also very conscientious about my friend's dietary needs and were really helpful in making suggestions when ordering. So if you're a regular at Laksa King (like half of Melbourne) and haven't yet been next door, go try Chef Lagenda! It's similarly priced, and won't disappoint.

Love Chef Lagenda, especially the pan fried dumplings and ten dollar soups for a mid week dinner. The chilli and ginger paste is freshly ground and is the perfect accompaniment to most dishes. Definitely ask for this!

As most decent Asian places do they cater for vegetarians and also some vegan options. The staff who work here are super friendly and love seeing familiar faces keep rolling back in. Having grown up in South East Asia, this place makes me happy. I only found out this place existed because a menu was dropped in my mailbox, and I am glad it was. This is not a new restaurant/take away, but the current owners have only been here about six months (they waited that long before doing the letter box drop, so they said). The menue is predominantly Malaysian, but there are some other classic dishes from various Asian locales, such as udon and pad Thai. My recent visit was for take away, but they do have melamine tables and a BYO policy for those who choose to dine in. That will be the strategy for my next visit. I ordered a Singapore noodles, and my flatmate got a char ho fun and dumplings. A nice little bonus was being offered not just house-made sambal with fresh chopped chillies, but also some pickled chillies as well when we picked up the meal. I hate getting take away and being told they don't offer fresh chilli, so this was an instant win. The food was fantastic, and very authentic. The staff are lovely and willing to chat. The venue has parking and is only about 20 minutes from my house on foot. All in all, great find for the inner north west. As Merrill J Fernando says, "Do try it".

While my partner insisted on ordering the Hainan Chicken, which arrived quickly, my order of "Hawker Laksa" took a significantly longer time to be served. In fact, my partner had already finished her meal by the time my bowl of laksa arrived. Although the restaurant has been in this location for quite some time, I was surprised that the waitresses were not taking orders. Instead, customers were required to approach the counter and place orders with a counter person there, who would then give a number stand to be set on the table. The Hainan chicken was okay, yet the fine chopped ginger was an additional $1 charge? On the other hand, my laksa was delicious and I could tell it was made with the authentic ingredients of that Hawker Street. While the restaurant was not very busy at the time, I found it frustrating that my partner and I were not served at the same time, and the wait for my food was quite long. Given this, it would have been nice for the staff to provide a clearer explanation for the delay. However, despite the wait, I must say that the laksa was well worth it. In fact, I would recommend trying the laksa despite the long wait.

Friends that have eaten the laksa say they think the spice is a little too overpowering for the dish (and they love spice). Personally though only having one dish available for vegetarians (and nothing for vegans) in Melbourne seems a little bit of a oversight. There are so many great veggie dishes coming out of that melting pot of cultures and culinary history that it seems a deliberate choice to restrict the options to one plate of expensive dumplings. They are soft, well stuffed but lacking in any great flavour. It's a order at the counter type deal here and food is brought out to your table. We had to find a bottle of water and two disposable plastic cups to drink it though. Maybe for the price people will deal with this but I think you can find cheaper and far more tasty options only a few doors down. Hopefully they will improve on their service and menu in the near future.

The chicken rice lack taste though and the soup served with it is usually just plain. They recently changed their Fish head laksa. Now they're using Salmon head for the laksa, and it works well. However, menu is limited. It'll be hard for them to compete with other restaurants around them for example, Rose garden , Laksa House and Sarawak Kitchen. It is also a shame they don't do combo deals that let us have a choice of a drink with the food we're going to have. It'll definitely stand out among their competitors. Plus, their place is smaller compare to other restaurants. However, I don't mind at all. Nonetheless, will still come back for their food. One of my good to places for a quick Roasted Chicken rice.

Char Kwee Tiaw after hours, no cooking needed…read more A long day, BoxFit session done around 8:30pm, now I'm hungry for some quick goodness to satisfy this craving. Woohooooo, Eureka this place is still open, we were the last customers. As we walked in two Ceiling fans were working hard, I don't think the AC was on, it was HOT, steamy, the room is filled with South East Asian aromas and it's not even a 40 degree Melbourne day, lots of goodness has been cooked and served before us, humidity, smells & sweats, reminiscence of a Hawker street somewhere in KL, Kuala Lumpur. I can feel my sweat from the BoxFit session has a new flavours now. From the Street level, this place is nothing fancy, the bright Green Jade colour is the only attractive feature about it, BUT what they are serving are incredible for what they are charging, they could and should charge more. Started with the CKT (Malaysian and Singaporean loves to abbreviate words) or Char Kwee Tiaw, Fried Rice Noodles, then Char Hor Fun, Combination Fried Rice Noodles with Egg Gravy sauce and lastly some Curry Puffs or Samosa (Indian) or Pastel (Indonesian). This pastry varied inside, but has common ingredients; Potatoes, Curry and Chilly. It was the right decision, not sure whether my muffin top would agree, worry about that later. In under than 5 minutes after we ordered, those goodness were flying onto our table .... so QUICK .... they served the best first ..... CKT - Char Kwee Tiaw, easy 8.5/10 ....VERY strong aroma of the Pork Crackling and Chinese Sausages, BIG Prawns just needs that burnt-wok taste, makes it a little drier .... That was a joy for around $12 Char Hor Fun 7/10, not quite there, rice noodles needs to be fried more but the Egg Gravy Sauce was tasty, it can be better and traces of the egg yolks still prominent, that tasty runny eggs .... about $12 Curry Puffs easily 8/10, fried to perfection, balanced ingredients and served hot, very important in my opinion, the aromatic flavours lingers as you bite into it, $5,50 for three. All these flavours plus Sambal & Chillies makes my palate sings. Life doesn't get much better than this after a long long day. Simplistic Joy and no drugs needed, just some CKT. A decade ago or so we might not be able to get these kind of offerings, so I must thank & commend the Chef and proprietor of the business for bringing that Hawkers' spirit and providing these goodness for us to enjoy.
