Great local restaurant in downtown Southern Pines. My wife & I celebrated our 27th anniversary there. From the moment we walked in the door Marianne (Chef Warren's wife) made us feel like family. Jess was an excellent server - extremely knowledgeable and with a quick wit. Never a dull moment during our experience. Went here with friends. It has great ambience & friendly service. The lighting and set up was great for a quiet dinner with friends. The water girl was like a ninja keeping our cups full. We got to try both local and exotic foods. We had kangaroo and emu, which was different, but really good. The filet special was phenomenal. The chicken very juicy. The desert was worth everything!!!! The mouse was good, pumpkincheesecake was good, but the pecan pie was orgasmic!!!!! It's not someplace to go for a quick meal, buy it is a great place to enjoy a relaxing evening. My beau made reservations for this restaurant the night of on a Friday and luckily there were reservations. The restaurant had a very homey feel to it with a giant Christmas tree at the entrance, snow globes lining the bar, subtle paintings hanging along the wall. We were immediately seated and were told that if our designated waitress was busy, we were free to call on any that were available. Even still I wasn't terribly impressed with the service. Yes the service members were all very nice and witty but they were pretty hard to come by which is mind blowing considering it really wasn't very busy. Like at all. It took about 30 minutes to get our initial order, about 45-60 min to get our food, another 20 to wave down a waitress for another drink, and another 20 to ask for our bill. The food was good but not as good as it should have been considering it was $30+ per plate. I got the sea bass special and the the steak special. I thought the crabmeat on top of the fish was very salty and my risotto was hard, not fully cooked. He seemed to enjoy his meal. The appetizers were both just okay. We got the crab chowder which lacked substance. There just wasn't much besides potato and soup. The lobster rangoon was probably the most disappointing. It was creamy but there wasn't enough filling and I thought it was rather bland. My experience wasn't terrible and I think it's probably just a one off experience and I could see myself going back. But probably not. I'm not willing to pay another $160+ for a meal I may or may not like. Oh one thing I did appreciate was the bread that they bring out while you wait for your food. We've been here 3 or 4 times and it's always phenomenal. Took my wife here for her Birthday. As always, the service was impeccable. Wait staff is engaging and attentive. Our waitress, Jess, was delightful. Excellent wine and cocktail list. Everything on the menu is good but splurge on the specials and you won't sorry. Wow! What a gem of a place. Nothing but raves from everyone at the table. Gin mojito cocktail was craveable. Kangaroo appetizer is truly unique and tasty. Steak frites was perfect...frites remained crunchy til the last bit of steak was gone. Worth every calorie. Special halibut with seafood mousse was divine. Vegetarian entree of cauliflower curry with black lentils was so flavorful even meat-eaters liked it. We chose Chef Warrens for our anniversary celebration. I ordered the citrus brined pork ribeye. It was incredibly delicious, beyond my expectations. I would DEFINITELY order this dish again, however I have just one critique...the menu states that there is a "parsley salad with vinaigrette " , sort of garnish atop the pork. What I got instead was a heaping pile of basil leaves. WAAAY too much and very overpowering and I just had to remove it. It didn't work, I would have loved some Arugula, but no way on those whole basil leaves. The Morrocan duck was also off the chain delicious. Service was super friendly and efficient. Just to give an analogy: people, nowadays, seem to take things the wrong way, whichever way you say them, so as a result people say things that tend to be vague and dull, boring. Chef Warren breaks the mold with his artistic creations in all of his dishes that lead to an absolute cascade of taste-buddery sensation that will leave you with chills down your spine. I had the onion soup which was a delicious cheesy​ dream, the broth was sweet and the Emmentaler​ was quite alluring. The salad with bacon and almonds was as delicate as Nick Jonas. But when they brought out the chocolate​ mousse I knew I was one happy hooker. I had not had a ​mousse like this since Caravelle in NYC. I live in Raleigh where there are some good places to chow down but sometimes these places tend to get overzealous​ about being imaginative that they tend to forget food the dreams from which good stuff began like from Chez Panisse​ or Lutece', simple​ things like a good duck or a good mousse. I feel like this place is home. I've enjoyed going here since long before I was sitting at a table with my friends for Senior Prom in high school. Today my wife and I walk down from our house in downtown Southern Pines to sample Warren's local cuisine. Luckily he hasn't gone too far off the eclectic cuisine as some of the other restaurants in the area. His menu selections feel much more southern than high society, new york. To me this is what does it. The food is wonderful and adequately priced given the quality of the ingredients. The drinks, designed by Warren's wife, Marianne, who is a true connoisseur of spirits, are amazing. My favorite being the Mango-Jalapeno Margarita. Between the fresh selections and the down-home, fine dining feel I would absolutely continue recommending this restaurant. read more

Their Hummus & Baba ghanoush appetizer is absolutely delectable (and a must try)! Have I mentioned this before? Well let me do it again! Chef Warren's is a place where my family and I meet up on weekends. The restaurant always has interesting platters and fantastic apps, plus their staff is usually very informative on wine pairings with your meal. Entree options are always rotated according to season and produce/meat, so there are is always something new to explore. Plus, there are always seafood/vegetarian options and Chef Warren (Did I mention when he's not serving up groovy, exotic dishes like escargot or kangaroo [pauvre kangaroo] that he also teaches yoga during his downtime?! Cool right?) and his assistants are always open to help with dietary substitutions if possible. Service can be a bit off, we've had the same gentleman a couple of times and he always seems bored or preoccupied when assisting us. Don't let that distract you however, it's one of the nicest places in the area to enjoy a night out of fine dining. Locally owned and I believe local ingredients whenever possible. Definitely recommended if passing through the area, they definitely take in walk-ins, yet I declare that reservations are advised. read more

My bf and i went here for our 1 year anniversary. My Bf ordered the duck breast and it was very tasty!! I ordered risotto with scallops. Presentation was good and combination was good. But risotto was under cooked and scallops were salty. I appreciate that they offered to replace the dish. But i didn't want them to cook the entire dish so i requested them to cook new scallops. Maybe my wife and I went on a wrong day, but our experience was most definitely one star, and that's being generous. We had heard such glowing things about CW's that it just seemed the go-to place for my wife's birthday. BIG mistake. Throughout the entirety of our meal, CW staff members stopped to talk with two people at the table to my right. Not talking here about a stop-and-go "Hi, how you doing, good to see you back"; rather it was like loud, looong-winded catching up on old friends, haven't seen you in dog years type conversations. And buddy, it was non-stop throughout our entire time there. They just ruined our dining experience, and they knew it. Even so, most of us learn to overlook other diners' bad manners, but not the staffs'. They were supposed to ensure that our dining experience was pleasant. Moving right along, my wife's halibut was, "fair." And my meal was disastrous, consisting of a mess of mung beans, cauliflower, and sour cream. My tip was a mere $5, but even that meager amount was not earned. Including that five bucks, we got out for only $88. If you want a good meal in Southern Pines, go to Chapman's. First time visit to SP and had dinner at Chef Warrens. Absolutely incredible everything. Staff was knowledgable and on the spot. Food was beyond awesome. The Mac n cheese is among the best I ever tasted. The salmon was perfect. But, as has been noted by a few others, the Pecan pie is worth the flight from Atlanta. I have been living in the Raeford area for about 8 months now and this is by far the best restaurant I have been to since being here. It's the first one I can absolutely say I will go back to. The atmosphere is very fun and has its own style. The service was very friendly and did a great job talking over the menu and answering questions. Loved that you can sit at the bar and watch the open kitchen- great feature! We started with kangaroo wrapped in prosciutto, crab stuff hush puppies and French onion soup. The kangaroo was great and the hush puppies were a unique taste- the sauce and garnish that sat under the hush puppies was excellent! The French onion soup was rather sweet, a bit too sweet for me but it had gobs of cheese so I was willing to look past the broth. French onion soup is my go to but this one didn't do it for me. I had the filet mignon with French string beans and their style of mashed potatoes and it was absolutely delicious, I will without a doubt order that again. My date had the pork belly ribeye and I couldn't stop grabbing off his plate, it was so tender and juicy! Both main courses were outstanding and cooked to perfection. Seems a bit cramped at first with the kitchen being in the same space, but the warm staff and the cozy decor made it feeling warm and inviting. The waiter, "Ed", was not overbearing and he knows what he is doing. The Pâté was very good, the salmon was ok & the deserts were amazing. My husband and I went to Chef Warren's for a romantic dinner. The atmosphere, although a little dated and stuffy, was perfectly suited for the occasion and the service was excellent. I had the duck and it absolutely melted in my mouth; it was perfect! My husbands entree was good, but fairly average, which is unacceptable for the price.
