We went in on a Saturday night and the restaurant was extremely busy. We opted for takeout because the wait for a table was long. We waited about 30-40 minutes for our food which wasn't too bad. The food was okay. We ordered lo mein, sesame chicken, fried rice, & broccoli in garlic sauce. They made a mistake and gave us shrimp fried rice when we ordered plain, which was fine for us but could've been bad for someone with an allergy. Lo mein- 3 stars: bland and overcooked Sesame chicken- 3 stars: good flavor but more breading than chicken Garlic broccoli- 5 stars: packed with flavor and crunchy Fried rice: 3 stars: bland and missing ingredients Overall my first experience at Cheng Du was okay. For starters, we waited 14 minutes before we were seated, and staff did little to accommodate us. Place was packed, with small booths that were organized strangely. Though the lighting was nice it felt very claustrophobic. They were out of mot drink selections, and simple dishes took a long time to get to the table. Water was rarely filled, instead we were left with a bland tea for most of the night. Our waiter had an earbud in the whole night, and didn't come back to the table after she gave us our food (other than bringing us the check..) Menu had a lot of selections to choose from - note that most food have some level of spice to it since it's Szechuan cuisine. Appetizer: Scallion pancake was good to share. Entrees: Heavenly chicken came with a bowl of rice - dish was good but a bit too spicy for me. Shrimp pad thai - this was ok - too much basil overpowered the taste of the dish and the onions were not fully cooked. This review is for delivery only -- I have not dined in person at Cheng Du 23. I am a big fan of Chang Du's Szechuan food -- specifically, their spicy braised fish filets. It's a huge portion and very tasty and not at all fishy. I found the three pepper chicken to be good as well. However, the American Chinese food is pretty subpar. The General Tso's chicken I ordered was extremely overcooked and dry and the sauce was more akin to a sweet and sour. It was not spicy. I also did not like the Kung Pao chicken. The pieces were inconsistent and large and it was not spicy. Altogether, Cheng Du delivery is 3 stars for the inconsistency. When it's good, it's good. However, it is pretty hit or miss. read more

I came here for lunch on a Saturday with my family. We ordered the Fuji Mountain beef, the crispy fish filets with chili, and the Chinese vegetables. The best dish was the crispy fish filets with chili, just the right amount of spice and the filets were not greasy at all. String bean dish was a bit oily and a but too mushy but flavorwise, not too salty and good. The spicy wonton was really really good with tender pork meat inside and the soy sauce viengrette was a bit sweet which added a really nice flavor! My favorite! Mapo tofu and tripple pepper chicken: 4/5 Tripple pepper chicken was very spicy and mala flavor was pretty strong which I appreciated so much! It felt like we were rushed to decide on what to order. It was around 3:30pm so the restaurant wasn't busy during this time. We ordered steamed shrimp dumplings and scallion pancake to start. So my brother suggested for us to dine here when he learned that we will be in NJ & NYC for a week. He said 1 of his clients really loves the food here.
