I chose this restaurant due to the incredibly diverse menu, and the proximity to my hotel on Rittenhouse Square. I was intrigued by the Sichuan flavorings and eager to try something new. The ambiance inside is ok, and it was pretty quiet for a Sunday at 6pm. The first thing I noticed is that I was given a very much shorter menu than what I had seen online. In retrospect, I think it was because I didn't look very adventurous - white, older, female tourist. I'm kind of bummed I didn't think to ask for the full menu, if it was on offer at all. Beverage offerings were minimal and did not include alcohol. I usually enjoy whatever asian beers that are available, but I just ordered a diet coke. For my meal, I ordered the chef's special hot oil dumplings appetizer and the pork hot pot - something I had never had. The hot oil dumplings were basically flat half-moon shaped noodles with a tasty ground pork meatball inside. Not really special, but good. The hot pot was really tasty with stir fried slices of pork, lotus root (love this - so crispy) cauliflower, sliced potatoes and lots of other nice veggies - it had hot oil at the bottom of the dish, but not so much that it soaked everything. I enjoyed the restaurant because it introduced me to a very authentic Sichuan meal, and it was good enough that I wanted to take it back to the hotel for nibbling on later. read more

If we had just gone here the first time it would have been our second favorite szechuan place in the states. The first time we went here was one of the best szechuan dishes we ever had while the second was pretty forgettable. One of the staff barly talked to us while the other was super attentive with great recommendations. I think the first one was the tofu dry pot which was huge, had great szechuan rich broth and savory tofu. Even with my wife and I starving it still filled us up and and we needed a to go container. The second we got was the general tso Seiten. With it being recommended by the staff and menu i hoped it was going to be better but I was a bit disappointed. It was mostly breading with a little bit of seitan I'm the center that didn't have much texture or flavor. That being said, the first dish was so good that I still recommend this place. read more

Su Xing House is an outstanding Chinese vegetarian restaurant. Their dining room is classy, paneled with Chinese prints, and handled our large party without issue. Regardless of your party size, be patient, as their kitchen isn't the fastest. Their hot and sour soup is a stand out, with a healthy kick. Last I was here, I had their Ebony & Ivory, a very mushroom-y dish. If you like shrooms (heh), you'll be good to go here. I've been back many many times since I first came here in 2008. Su Xing Restaurant (1508 Sansom St., Philly) is no more. They're under new management, rebranded as Chengdu, and no longer full Sichuan vegan. Now there's a limited vegan menu with a bunch of regular Chinese food. I got the vegan fish; it was fried hard, burned, and doused in some sugary, diabetic sauce with peas & carrots; it was straight trash. The vegan veggie rice was just ok. On a recent visit to Philly I stopped at Su Xing House for a bite. The majority of the menu is vegan yet some dishes contain egg and the ones that contain egg are clearly marked. The menu is super extensive. Su Xing House is literally a house of plant strong delights including: 18 appetizers 9 soups 13 noodle and rice dishes 20 kinds of veggie dishes Tofu done 32 different ways 30 Chef Specialties on offer 23 beverages to stay hydrated when Philly was in a heat wave 5 new dishes including Vegan Calamari, Vegan Squid, and Mongolian tofu to name a few 3 desserts 38 mains to choose from for the lunch combo Pro tip: Check out that lunch combo M-F from 11am to 3pm. The lunch combo comes with a choice between 38 main entree dishes, rice, and two sides. Upon my server's suggestion I ended up getting the Eggplant with Tofu in Garlic Sauce with a side of brown rice, braised mushrooms, and a spring roll with dipping sauce. It was quite good. It was tasty and served piping hot yet found the dish to be quite saucy so if I returned I would request to go light on the sauce yet probably wouldn't order the same dish despite it being good since there are 37 more options to choose from on the lunch combo menu. My yoga teacher in India said the problem in the West is too much choice. This is true. Even though I was dining in the West in the historic city of Philadelphia at an Eastern restaurant aka Chinese Buddhist Vegetarian cuisine leaning heavily on the vegan side. Had dinner here on a Monday - I liked the food and would come back, but wish I could give Su Xing 3.5 stars instead. The extra half star is for being an all-vegetarian restaurant which are very hard to find and I love supporting them. The food was good but there were some misses. In order of top choices: 1) Sesame Seitan - this was delicious, the sauce was very flavorful, and I liked the chewy texture of the seitan. I would get this again! Could have used more spice. 2) Cream Cheese Wontons - can't go wrong with fried cheese, but I wish the filling had more punchy flavor rather than just creamy melty cheese. 3) Potato Croquettes - crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, served super hot. Enjoyed these but again wish there was more FLAVOR. 4) Pan Fried Dumplings - these were fine and reminded me of something my childhood Chinese friend used to make. Pretty standard 5) Spring Rolls - not bad but the filling lacked a bit of substance and flavor. 6) Scallion Pancakes - would not get these again. Verrry tough to chew, not flaky at ALL, and had 0 actual scallion flavor. Love the complimentary jasmine tea that the server keeps refilling throughout the meal. Ambiance was nice and service was pretty standard / unfussy, but wish the food had more flavor. I was craving more spice and flavor! We liked Nom Wah's version of some of these dishes more! The lower/street level does lack ambience and needs an update, but the upper level is really pretty, unique and very charming. This is my third time coming here. I'm usually seated in the back. Always the same waiter. I'll start by saying she's on point. Dishes cleared and water and tea refilled. I should've went for bottled water. The pitcher of water coming around seemed to get warmer the longer we stayed. We had several entrees. I neglected to take a picture of the Mongolian tofu and the General Tsos Seitan. Tofu is not my thing. Reminds me of egg foo young consistency. But the seitan in the General Tso Sauce is a must every time. The entrees was edamame ( it was okay), the potato latkes I believe they were. Was great. The little chicken nugget things maybe croquettes. Can't remember the name. They taste like off brand chicken nuggets. Not very good and they come with ketchup. Only reason this place doesn't get the 5 star is the Bathrooms are atrocious every time I've been there. Food this good needs to have an award winning performance all around the board. I went to Su Xing House by accident (I had confused it with another place), but it turned out to be a great mistake---this is a wonderful spot in central Philadelphia. For appetizers we got the steamed vegetable dumplings ($6.25) which were fresh and nicely done; they tasted home-made and not just reheated from frozen. The steamed vegetable bun ($5.75) was also great with a pillowy-soft rice/wheat shell and savory innards. For mains, we loved the kale and dried tofu with spicy red pepper ($13.50), which is a colorful, light, fresh and addictive stir-fry. The crispy tofu and dried bamboo shoot ($17) was deeply savory with a nice array of textures, from the crunchy bamboo to the crisp-then-soft tofu. The service is friendly and attentive. Pro-tip: skip the "popular dishes" like the General Tso's Seitan and Sesame Seitan. If you go with basic dishes like those, you will not be impressed; try something new. THIS is what I call a happy meal. My friends and I came here and ate family style. We got three apps, sesame cold noodles, scallion pancakes, and steamed dumplings. They give you bottomless jasmine green tea and it's so so good and the perfect temperature to drink immediately. The three entrees we got were sesame broccoli, general tso's tofu and golden feather knish. Everything was to die for. This is not a joke. The consensus is that the cold sesame noodles are the best thing in the world, we'd all sell our first born for endless cold sesame noodles. Su xing is a fully vegetarian Chinese food restaurant in center city. I've been a few times and had decent food each time and was looking forward to bringing a few friends there. Sadly Su Xing missed the mark this time. We were placed in a part of the dining area which had a broken AC and it was HOT. We were all sweating throughout the meal. In addition the food took forever to come and our waiter was not friendly. Any question we asked we received brusque responses too. Some of our favorite dishes of the night were vegetable heaven and triple shredded. It was nice that most dishes come with rice and you have your choice of brown or white rice. Overall a solid 3 star experience. I am not writing them off but will have high expectations next time to see if I can give a better rating for my next trip.
