Don't get the curry unless you want onion curry. I have been eating at Chens for over a decade. I've never been more disappointed than this time. The flavors were fine if a little bland. The chef put an entire onion into the meal. There was green pepper, some measly zucchini slivers and two carrots. I tried to salvage the meal by adding the rice into the container but as the photos will reveal the sauce was thick, slimy and only an abysmal amount. ​I was left disappointed and still hungry. There don't seem to be many full-service Chinese restaurants around here. Most offer tables for dine-in eating, but you're expected to order at the counter and bus your own table. Those are fine if you're grabbing a quick lunch, but for a nice evening out with your date it's nice to be served. So we were excited to hear about Chen's Asian Restaurant in Carlisle. On the Sunday night that we visited the dining room was about half full. The tables were clean and comfortable, and the waitress gladly accommodated our request for a booth. We sat and were eager to look through the expansive menu that included many Thai dishes and sushi in addition to the Chinese. After dinner our overall assessment was a solid "meh." We started with a couple cups of soup (egg drop and hot n spicy). For our main meal we ordered the orange chicken and asked them to dial down the spicy-ness. We also ordered the chicken chow mein. The egg drop soup lacked character. It had the consistency and flavor of chicken broth. The orange chicken was extremely mild; a little sweet but otherwise bordering on being flavorless. Was that my fault for asking them to dial back the spices? Possibly. If there is a next time then I'll know better. The chow mein too was surprisingly lacking in personality or flavor. One of the things we like about chow mein are the crunchy noodles, but in this case we were given a bowl of fried wonton instead - the same fried wontons we snacked on when we first sat down. The menu said the chow mein was served with crispy noodles, but we were served crispy wonton skins instead. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill? You can be the judge. As for dessert, there were a number of surprises on the menu, like cheesecake. But given our experience up to this point, we decided to pass. read more

The Asian choices are diverse and have some Chinese and Thai selection. The service is quick and wow the portions are ginormous. Four stars? Seriously??? Four of us had dinner there last night, and there was only one dish that was even remotely well-prepared. The staff are very nice, but the food was boooo-ring. I made the mistake of ordering a Thai dish--chicken pad Thai, medium spicy--which arrived with zero spiciness and a nondescript sauce, and rubbery pieces of chicken. The only remedy they had to offer was a bottle of sri racha, which I streeled on to make the dish palatable. Two of the other dishes had absurdly sweet sauces with no interesting spicing of any kind. The one dish I would consider ordering if I ever went back--which is not likely--was the red curry. That sauce had some good flavors in it, the rest were a total bust. I hate to be so negative about a restaurant after only one visit, but I could tell right away that this place was not trying very hard at all. There are decent Thai eateries in the area, so there's no need to patronize a place that either doesn't know how to make good Chinese (or Thai) or just doesn't care. Started off with Tea hot & Iced The wife ordered her favorite Egg Drop soup and we ordered crispy spring rolls for an appetizer. The wife order Sweet & Sour Shrimp as an Entree and I ordered the Heaven and Earth which consists of jumbo shrimp, chicken breast & roasted pork with vegetables and pineapple in a brown sauce. The food all came out hot and delicious. The Portions were the perfect size. The wife was a little bit disappointed that the Sweet & Sour Shrimp wasn't served with vegetables like carrots & peppers and covered in sauce like other establishments. Overall Chen's just opened for inside seating and they are still short handed but they still performed efficiently and they are very hospitable. A friend told me they had heard this place was closed. I am happy to report it tonight. Although when I asked the owner if it had been closed, he said "Well, we close on Tuesdays." There are several good places for sushi in Carlisle. But chins as you can see from the pictures makes excellent sushi. My son has more fancy tastes than I do, but I got the two spicy rolls that you see in the picture. There really isn't a way to go wrong here. You'll enjoy it. read more

Shins is one of the few sit down Asian restaurants left in Carlisle. On any given night you can go in and get fresh made sushi Thai, Korean, American Chinese, and Japanese food. Waitresses or quick and very attentive. The host is always friendly and chats with us going in, coming out, and stop by at the table often. The dining rooms are large and spacious. There's a smaller section for quick dining right there while you watch your sushi being made or you can set an a large side of the restaurant which is ideal for families and groups. As nice as the restaurant is, the food is even better. They've got such an eclectic menu that you can try something new every time you go there. I ordered the Thai Red Curry. Curry or kari means 'sauce". Chen's Thai Red Curry has no sauce. It was basically a stir fry of vegetable with some Thai seasonings and the option of chicken or shrimp. Very disappointing. I guess best to go to a Thai restaurant for Thai food. Chen's is a nice comfortable restaurant and service but perhaps they should stick to Chinese. It is one of the few places that offer duck. I wish they would consider doing a Saturday or Sunday authentic Dim Sum. This restaurant is solid but not spectacular. The service is good, the preparation of the food is fast, and the dining area of the restaurant is one of the best in the Carlisle area. The food is not bad, but certainly not the best Asian food I have had in the area or elsewhere. I enjoy the black pepper chicken, and it's combination of sweet and spice, although it could use just a bit more sauce. The Thai dishes are average at best. I have tried the Pad Thai, chicken pineapple rice and curry chicken and none of them are great. Decent but not great. I have yet to try the Japanese cuisine. However, my recommendation at this point is to stick to what they seem to do best and that is the Chinese food options - and get Japanese and Thai meals elsewhere. read more

Its hard to believe this was a Hardee's back in 2002. The building has been beautifully transformed beginning with the tranquil water wall at the entrance. Waitstaff was very attentive, prompt, polite and friendly. Extensive menu features Sushi - both raw and cooked, Sashimi, other Japanese cuisine, Chinese cuisine, a bit of Vietnamese and a short list of Thai dishes. My early dinner began with Vietnamese Spring rolls, crispy perfection served with pineapple juice for dipping. My main course was Thai Red Curry with Chicken and served with brown rice. My mild curry had just the right bit of spicy zing with the coconut milk red sauce, fresh vegetables and slices of tender chicken breast. Every bit as good as the best Thai Red Curry I've had anywhere else. Brown rice was chewy and good. I was completely filled and satisfied. My partner had the crab rangoon appetizers served with sweet & sour dipping sauce. Served hot & crispy with flavourful filling. Partner ordered Crispy Peking Duck which was served as a platter with slices of tender duck meat, strips of crispy duck skin, julienned cucumber strips, hoisin sauce and Chinese buns. Ingredients put together in bun with hoisin sauce was relished by my partner who also left completely full and satisfied. I highly recommend giving Chen's Asian Restaurant a try. This particular location in town was home to a Hardee's back in the day. That fast food joint burnt down and has ever since been plagued with failed restaurant after failed restaurant....well whatever Hardee's Fire Curse that haunted this corner of town for a decade, has been lifted! Chen's is a unique Asian Cuisine experience. You can choose from their expansive Chinese food section, their extensive Thai food section, or their exceptional Japanese food section of their well designed menu. Sushi is fresh and created with passion and skilled hands, pad thai sauced to perfection with subtle hits of lime and scallions, and Lo mein that soars above any you will get in Carlisle...and do your tastebuds a service and get a Thai iced Tea! To be perfectly honest I''ve never actually stepped foot in Chen's Asian Restaurant in Carlisle. My experiences have been completely of the "to go" kind. This is largely due to my sister-in-law who loves the place and wants to have sushi waiting for us after our long trip from Florida (ain't she swell!). Chen's Asian Restaurant is the type of restaurant that, when left to my own devices, I would never visit. The reason is that Chen's sells sushi, Chinese and Thai food. I'm cool with two of those. You wanna do sushi and Chinese? Have at it. Sushi and Thai? There's some decent places in Tampa that combine those two. But when you are pushing all three, something is bound to slip. So what is that at Chen's? In my opinion, its the sushi flavor. Let's start with the good. I love that Chen's offers so many different vegetarian sushi rolls. They've got your traditional avocado, cucumber, asparagus and sweet potato rolls. On the not so traditional side, they serve three rolls with oshinko, a Japanese pickle, including their vegetarian yummy roll which also contains cucumber, asparagus, avocado and mango. All of these rolls are reasonably priced. When you throw in the lunch specials (one dollar rolls, buy one get one, bento boxes) things get absolutely crazy. Despite the awesome deals and unique flavors the sushi doesn't really cut it for me. Why? Mainly the taste. I've pretty much tried the lot of their vegetarian rolls and only the vegetarian yummy roll registers as something flavorful and interesting. The rest seem to lack anything that makes them memorable. That wouldn't be a huge deal, I mean sushi is just rice and vegetables, if there wasn't another place in town that has vegetable roll flavors that are just as creative with much better developed taste. In short, if I'm looking for cheap and convenient, I'll look to Chen's. If I'm looking for a more memorable sushi experience, I'll go elsewhere. read more

As the saying goes, "You only get one chance to make a good first impression." Unfortunately, Chen's Asian Restaurant blew that chance when I stopped in for lunch late last week. Yes, the floor plan is attractive with dark wood tables and tile floor. Yes, the staff is friendly, attractive and willing to help a stranger through their menu. But, no, this is not a "fusion" Asian spot by any true measure. It is more a "confusion" joint that pretends to do Thai dishes, and takes a shot at sushi. It falls far short of the mark on both. I ordered a bowl of Thai Tom Yum Soup and fried Pork Dumplings. The soup bore no resemblance to that traditional spicy potage. There was no lemongrass, and the veggies were sparse. In reality, it was Wonton Soup broth with some cut up veggies and a sprinkle of Thai Curry Powder. That was a bastardization that just did not float. It was awful. Management must count on the fact that few customers have every tasted the real thing to attempt to pass that off as Thai. The Dumplings had thick skin and a ground substance within that I took to be a mix of pork and beef, as the color was too dark for it to be just pork. The taste was okay, but again not close to traditional jiotze. The accompanying dipping sauce used a vinegar that was not sweet enough, and not enough Chinese pepper to reach the proper heat quotient. The fish used for the sushi did not appear to be fresh, although the three white-hatted chefs seemed to know what they were doing. Hot tea at a buck and a half was hardly worth it for what they claimed was Oolong. Didn't taste like it. Hot water alone would have been better. Sorry Chen's. Once was more than enough. read more
