After moving east from 97302 to 97317, we needed to find a new favorite Chinese food restaurant. We had loved Hong Kong House, then they were taken over by Chen's. We loved the food, and decided to try the original. We had some trouble trying to figure out how to get to their parking lot, but we were sure glad we did! We were greeted warmly and seated in a cozy booth. The minimalist decor and soothing music was wonderful. We had a generous and delicious cup of soup first. Egg Flower for my husband, and Hot and Sour for me. They were both flavorful and hot. Next we had pot stickers, pan-fried, of course. The texture was perfect. Brown and crisp on the sides, and soft and chewy everywhere else. The filling was tasty, too. Our main dish was Sesame Beef, one of our favorites. They typically stir fry it here, but we asked for the traditional deep-fried version. We weren't disappointed. The dish was absolutely delicious! My family was hungry, but we don't really eat out and were unsure where we could get quality food for a good price, without sicky tummies from harsh oils and sugars after. Google actually recommended Chens Family Dish when I looked up where I could get great food, good price, and feeling good after. We ordered online and asked for gluten free and no msg. I called to make sure the notes fit the order went through and the person who answered (I unfortunately do not recall her name) was very friendly, helpful and didn't sound annoyed or anything, just reassuring they got the note and very caring. The quality of food, was amazing. It wasn't greasy, overly salty or fatty. It was on the same level as home cooked meals. Two entrees that came with rice fed my partner, young child and I and we were full and happy after. My picky eater even ate all of his veggies and talked about how yummy it was! Either the noodles are weird, the flavor's off, or the chicken tastes like it forgot to get seasoned. But THIS place?! Absolute perfection. Flavor? On point. Noodles? Cooked just right. Chicken? We ordered through DoorDash on a Thursday evening. The order was a little delayed, but the Dasher was great at communicating that. The food arrived hot and there was SO MUCH! They delivered it in a large cardboard box, so nothing tipped over or leaked. The crab Rangoon were amazing. Most I've had other places are burned or subpar. The orange chicken had a nice warm spice to it. Everyone was happy with their food. My only critique is that I ordered the Hawaiian chicken, and I missed the pineapple essence. First timer, came for lunch after noticing during my time here that the parking lot always looks busy. I will DEFINITELY be back! The $10.50 lunch specials include a cup of soup, an appetizer bite, entree and choice of rice - one of which was pork fried rice. I chose a cup of hot & sour soup (which was hearty and had a nice heat to it), a spring roll (clearly home made and best I've ever had), Szechuan Beef (ordered medium heat - excellent), and pork fried rice (yummy). Restaurant is located in a strip mall just off of Lancaster Drive. It's a bit hidden behind a 7-11. Lovely place with lots of seating available on a Saturday afternoon. Has a full bar as well. Upon entering I was almost immediately greeted and seated within a few minutes. I ordered the lunch special. Schezwan Chicken, Pork Fried Rice, Vegetable Spring Roll and Egg Flower Soup. I was brought my soup first which tasted a bit flavourless but I can tell it was fresh made. I added some salt and pepper to it which made it taste better. Had plenty of chicken in there and crunchy bamboo shoots. The Schezwan Chicken was very flavourful and delicious! Same for the accompanying fried rice and spring roll. I came here for a solo lunch. You would never know from the outside how pretty the interior is. Food and pricing are great, and the weight staff are very polite. However, Christmas may not be the best day to go. There were just two of us, and our meal arrived an hour and a half after we arrived. One dish was delivered approximately 45 minutes before the others. If you're patient, and you don't care about some food being cold by the time the rest of it arrives, you're in for a great evening. They seem to be famous for takeout. Pot Stickers- Best in town, hands down. They had great flavor, and the meat was seasoned and included cabbage in the potsticker. The dough was flavorful and not plastic in texture like many are. Shrimp Egg roll- Heaven. Could use some more shrimp, but full of flavor and nice and crispy. Pork Fried rice- It was average, Good flavor, nice spices, and not mushy. This is an updated review. It's been 4 years since I've eaten here. The egg drop soup is still good and large portion. The lunch menu and regular menu items are also large portions. The food itself was not good at all. I've eaten at many Chinese restaurants in big city where the food is authentic. The bbque pork was chewy and flavorless. This is basic standard American Chinese food with off flavors. Lovely space and friendly staff. They just need to revisit recipes and add authentic flavors. read more

With a world spinning around outside, you are greeted by a calm piano song and images of a mountain flight from a bird's view on the television. The waitress welcomed us and showed us to our seats. Even the bathroom was clean and smelled fresh. We enjoyed a simple lite meal of orange chicken and Mongolian beef. The meals came with egg flower soup, and we drank chrysanthemum tea. We don't usually go to Salem aren't familiar with the restaurants there, so I reviewed the Yelp reviews for some guidance. We were very disappointed with Chen's Family. The inside of the restaurant was nice. The service was alright. The food, however, was bland and sub-par. The egg flower soup (which was charged extra) was hearty with noodles and vegetables, but lacked any flavor. My husband ordered Kung Pao Chicken, which was indicated on the menu as spicy, which it was not. I ordered Chicken Lo Mein, which was made using spaghetti noodles rather than chow mein noodles, and it hardly had any vegetables in it. We also had BBQ pork, which was rather dry.
