It's been a few years since I last reviewed Chesapeake Humane Society so I feel compelled to provide an update. I bring my basset hound here every year for her vaccines and other shots. The staff is always friendly and helpful, you can tell the people working there really enjoy what they are doing and are genuinely concerned for your pet. Compared to a trip to the veterinarian's office you can save a lot of money going to the Humane Society for routine shots and procedures such as spay/neuter, microchipping, dental cleaning, dental extractions, deworming, flea and tick control, etc... Microchip and vaccine service is available by appointment. You can request an appointment on their website or call them on the phone. When you schedule the appointment have your credit card ready as they require a small deposit, on my last scheduling the deposit was $30. Before the recent pandemic the services were done twice a week on a walk-in basis. Wait times were pretty lengthy (sometimes over two hours) so I really appreciate the appointment system now in place. I'm usually in and out in thirty minutes or less. They have tons of room outside for you to walk with your pets or just wait for them to call your pet. There is a station with bags and a pooper scooper if you need to clean up after your pet. The facility was recently remodeled so everything inside is neat and clean. I am grateful for such a devoted staff working to help us keep our pets happy and healthy while also helping our homeless animal population. The Chesapeake Humane Society is a great asset to the community. read more

The absolute worst clinic to work with. Staff is rude. There is no flexibility with rescue animals. When dealing with ferals things can change in an instant. You would think a vet clinic that deals with this constantly would be flexible. NOT. I will never do business here again, not with a rescue or personally. read more

Applied for neutering service for my dog, and they requested shot records and I provided them, no problem. Gave me run around about how his two DAPP shots are not good enough, and they wanted to give him two more of the same shots before the procedure, which would give him total of four all within 6 months. wouldn't recommend this clinic, sounds like the are not interested in the well being of the pet. read more

HORRIBLE SHELTER and customer service. If you're looking to adopt, go elsewhere. Jenny and Margaux were awful and should not be responsible for adoptions. Pretty sure they had a friend who was interested in the same pet, so they did everything to make it impossible for us. My husband had been talking to them via email, phone, and in person for an entire week to adopt a specific bunny for a Christmas present. They said everyone in the house needed to meet him, so we all came in. I wasn't aware of the plan, but we were donating food to them, so we visited him while we were there. We had a wonderful meeting with Flash. My husband submitted his application and continued to correspond with the ladies who began to do everything they could to make sure he couldn't get him. He told them it was a Christmas surprise and reassured them that we've had several lops & are familiar with their needs. He purchased everything they required, though many of the requirements had been suggestions at the beginning of the process. They wanted proof of complete set-up including having the litter IN the litter box. The picture of the bag of litter next to the litter box in the kennel wasn't enough, they said they needed to see it opened and IN the box. What?! They also demanded a picture of the final setup. My husband sent a picture of everything set up but had to remind them multiple times that it was only there (in our son's room) to keep it hidden from me as it was a surprise. It was impossible to have it in the final place since I would have seen it. Regardless, nobody should have to provide proof of where in their home the final setup will be. They continually ignored my husband when he told them the picture of the setup was not where it will be (there was a cord near the kennel in my son's room). They kept harping on the cord no matter how many times he told them the cord was irrelevant because it wasn't going to be in there, and reminded them of our experience with lops. When my husband did everything they asked and he and my son went in on CHRISTMAS EVE as planned, to pick him up, they said they had someone else put in an application and ours expired. They also said they don't do holds, but the people who just submitted their application weren't there, they were on their way. My husband and son WERE THERE with all of their stringent requirements, but they flat out refused to hear them. We have always adopted our pets, including several lops, and we have NEVER been through such an awful process. It was very clear they had someone they knew who wanted him for a Christmas gift and were holding him for them. My husband and kids were so upset when they came home. My husband was actually in tears which is not something that happens often. Christmas morning, my gift was an empty rabbit setup and my family having to explain why it was empty and what they went through. We bought everything to satisfy their "requirements," and now it's all sitting in the garage. I'm furious and sad, not for myself, but for my family who planned out this beautiful surprise for me, knowing how much I love lops and to hopefully lessen the pain of a really hard year for our family. My husband felt like a failure and my kids were devastated that I didn't have anything under the tree. Christmas isn't about gifts, but it is about loved ones & memories, and this was a bad experience for them. We frequently donate money and items to shelters because of our love of and commitment to all animals, but we will never donate to this shelter again. They not only made an adoption impossible, they also ruined my family's Christmas morning. It's a shame the animals are in the hands of people who don't have their best interests at heart, but those of their friends and family. ZERO COMPASSION. ZERO EMPATHY. ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE. Their mission is supposed to help animals find forever homes, but unless you're in good with them personally, you better hope the animal you want isn't on one of their friend's list. I pray this sweet bunny doesn't end up back at a shelter after the Christmas newness wears off. Also, because they REQUIRED everything be opened and setup (litter, etc.), we aren't able to return it. Not only are their practices shady, but they also cost us money we can't get back. read more

I HAVE NEVER MET PEOPLE SO RUDE!!! I dropped my animal off to get spayed and the were absolutely nasty towards me. for people who are taking my animal to do a surgery on it you would think they would be a lot kinder to the people who are dropping off. I then was told pickup would be between 12-3. 1:30 nothing so i called and they stated they knew nothing and they hold give me a call when they did. 2:45 and nothing so i walked in and asked them what was going on. They stated they had the chart for my animal but needed me to wait. multiple people needed help or were upset with that was going on inside or outside. I will never be coming here ever again. Don't waste your time coming to this place. Should have listen to my gut when i walked in the door and took my animal back home with me right away. read more

I adopted a cat from here April of 2020. He was a senior cat with only 1 previous owner. He was purring and liked pets, and seemed like a perfect addition to my family. When I was looking at the cats, no one mentioned his life or medical history. I was told he was going through a dewormer because he had diarrhea. Turns out the cat has had smelly diarrhea his whole life according to his surrender information, and I haven't been able to help him in the 2 years I've had him. read more

My two experiences with the Chesapeake Humane Society: 11.20.2020 Took my dog Brady to his scheduled appointment, arriving 10 minutes early. I signed in and got back into my truck. After waiting 20 minutes past my appointment, I asked about his appointment. The technician said they were running behind and will be with us soon. Finally, after 40 minutes, they came for Brady. I suggested to the two technicians, that if they are running behind for a quick call, so people would not have to wait in their vehicles for 40 minutes before being seen. Then technician with black hair glasses, khaki sweater and stonewashed jeans, responded with, I do not have to see him today, you can take him somewhere else. Stunned with her response, I responded with fine, I will. I was refunded my money. I called Mount Pleasant Veterinary and will pick up his medication tomorrow. Well worth the wait. I waited about twenty minutes and called to talk with a supervisor, Dr. Turner. We discussed what occurred and my displeasure with the horrible customer service experience, she said would talk with the associate. 11.13.2020 Took my other dogs Ronan (52lbs) and Guinness (19lbs) in to be neutered. Surgery went well for both. But they confused the medications for the dogs. My wife caught it, only after given the medication to both dogs and noticed no affect to Ronan and little hyper Guinness laid on the doggie bed just staring at the walls. Luckily it did not kill him. Went back the next morning and brought it to the attention of a technician. She corrected the labels and to medication to the proper dog. Finally, it appears trying to save money is not always the best idea when it comes to your four-legged children. Watch who you bring your children to. read more

This place sucks!!! Staff are unfriendly and inconsiderate of needs The manager, Heather is even more pointless. I ask to speak to her and her blank affect and lack of empathy made this experience one I would never repeat or recommend. Save yourself the time and travel to the SPCA for better service and care. read more

So, I decided to come to the walk in clinic for my dogs vaccinations. The only thing I can say is to be ready to wait. Not a regular wait, but more like a 3-4 hour wait. Yeah, crazy but the alternative is high Vet cost and fees. It's a trade in i guess. Just be ready for it. They give you one of this alert thingys for when its your turn. You may get a seat inside, but probably not unless you're really early. You can also sit on one of the benches outside. I just sat in my car, but mind you this was mid summer so it was crazy hot. You should probably be there like 30-45 minutes early to get a good spot in line cause it fills up quick. The times are posted on the website. The crazy thing is my dog was in the back for like 5-10 minutes, and when I arrived there were supposedly only like 6 people in front of me. I don't know how that adds up, but I guess I am happy the service is available. read more

My dog is currently going through heartworm treatment from the Humane Society. My dog is like my baby and I love how CHS understands that. Every time I call for a question they are very responsive and helpful. I know my pup is in good hands when we go in for his check ups and treatment. read more

My dog was neutered here. The COVID protocols were a joke. It's a desk outside with a sign in form and pens that everyone can touch but not a drop of cleaner to be had. Over the phone and in person I found the personnel kind of rude. You wait without anyone checking in on the clients in their cars. Setting up pickup times and cleaning stations would be better. read more

I recently brought my puppy here to get spayed. They are much cheaper than it costs to have her spayed in town. I was hoping the quality would be as good as well. We had to reschedule her appt and just happened to find out about a cancellation for the next day so we took it. When I brought her in, they were very organized and friendly. I was in and out in a few minutes. Cocoa Bean has done very well with her recovery. The few stitches she has have healed nicely. I am extremely pleased with our experience there. The only negative is how difficult it is to get someone on the phone. My husband had to call multiple times to get an appt. Thank you for offering this service to the community. read more

My son adopted two cats with the understanding that the cats have to be neutered. He made the appointment, dropped the cats off, works a good hour away, and they call him at 2:30 to pick them up by 3 pm today, and THEN tell him they charge a DOLLAR A MINUTE IF HE IS LATE. I wanted to give it zero stars but that wasn't an option! I have been going to them for 5 years. Today, I brought my cat and dog for vaccines, I had a scheduled appointment for 12:15. I filled out the form on the table with pet names, cell # and car info. 45 minutes later, a tech comes out to the red suv next to my green car, looking for my pets. She eventually comes to my car and asked for my pets by the wrong names. There was a problem, she came back out to the red suv again, which was empty. They then called my home number to report the problem. My mom said I was there and gave them my cell#. They were trying to charge me for Heartworm preventative that I didn't request. They finally brought pets back, I discovered I was charged a $20 dollar exam fee for each pet, paid $10 last year, plus was not even told the results of the Heartworm test or exam. Very disappointed, staff was rude and nasty, acting like they were doing me a favor when I asked for more information and a copy of shots for boarding. Very disappointed in the service. I could have taken them to my regular vet for these prices and gotten a more thorough exam! Will not return!! read more

Had booked the appointment for about 4 weeks from the actual date and no one had bothered to let me know that before i took my cat in for neutering to not give food or water. I had actually dropped off a deposit and i had asked a receptionist is there is anything i should be concerned or anything i can do before the appointment and she didn't say anything. On the day i came in at 7:00 in the morning for the appointment, the receptionist gave me a really nasty attitude so early in the morning. Just disappointed, because they don't understand how hard it is for me to take time away from work the whole day and have to lose that money just so i can just get turned down because they forgot to remind me a HUGE detail. Now i have to take more time off because of it. What a waste of time. read more

Took my cat here to be neutered and up to date on vaccines. My 7 year old was scared to drop her kitty and was in tears when we got there, the front staff was so nice. They took my daughter into a room of kittens and promised her hey would take care of ours. And they did! Our baby is happy and healthy! They called the next day after his surgery to make sure he was ok. read more
