This place seems to let the EGO get in the way of serving potential new customers. There are tons of fencing companies, yet talked to Chesley left me with the notion that they believe they are superior. They even managed to toss in the fast that they local big box stores have fencing that is subpar. Not that I asked but I guess that is the attempt to discourage you from going there to get quotes. Out of all the companies I talk with Chesley was the only one to have negative things to say about another fence installer company.. We bought an iron fence from this company at a prior house (spending thousands of dollars). We called them and asked to buy replacement hinges for a gate at our new house (someone ran into it) and they refused to provide any help since they didn't install the fence. We don't know who installed the fence. The customer rep was extremely rude. I guess being a repeat customer doesn't matter to them. read more

I abstained from writing a public review when the fence was installed 5 years ago after an absolutely deplorable install process. That is a choice I now regret. In July 2023, a wind storm pulled one of the fence posts away from the house. I naively paid for the repair in full in advance and now regret that as - once again - Chesley Fence techs have lied about their install practices not only to the ladies in the office but also to me, the customer. Attached are photos of before and "after" the repair from Oct 30, 2023. The Chesley tech literally claimed to have fixed it and between the time they left and I got home a few hours later, the wind must have blown it again. Keep in mind this was on Oct 30, 2023 and there was no storm or high winds on the day of the repair. I will be taking legal action if Chesley is unable or unwilling to rectify this problem. I had a 230' vinyl privacy fence installed by Chesley, and I am pleased with the final product. I had my estimate on 8th of May, and was told there was a 6 - 8 week window (based on weather). I gave my half deposit as required 31st May, and was told I would hear from someone as installation date approached. June 10th I was sent the basic Location Data request and I returned it immediately. Was told by their Production Assistant, hopefully the ground will continue to dry and they would press ahead with install. Now on July 16th I receive another email from the same Production Assistant telling me my install would be further delayed due to "one of their crew foremen quitting". (HOW IS THIS MY PROBLEM!!) So now instead of Late July I have been estimated to start install August 12th. (Remember the 6-8 week estimate I was originally given). Then on the 25th of July I get another email (same guy) changing estimate to 19th August. (But lets look at the weather; it has been dry for a few weeks). Now after all this delay they finally start the tear-down August 21st, and two guys show up to complete the tear-down. They are here for about 3.5-4 hours then they leave for they day. Day two, and all except the final day, only one guy shows up (This is a tear-out and install of 230' of fencing). The one guy they sent worked well, and even worked in some misting rain. My real issue is that once this company gets your down payment there is no urgency or commitment to meet their own deadlines. I was told it would be 3-4 day job, and it took a full week. I have mixed feelings as to if I would ever use these guys again. The finished product is nice, but it also was more expensive then other quotes. The Production Assistant that handled me, was the TRUE disappointment, as his job was to keep me posted and keep the job on track for completion. He was the weakest link in the entire process. But then, why only send ONE guy to tear-out and install this much fence after already causing so much delay. I am just not sure if this is a company worth re-peat business. We had a bad experience with installation, they installed the gate wrong and have come out 3 times trying to make it better. Now we have pots filled with sand on either side to keep gate closed. When we got the fence said 7 year warranty... a year ago they came out and re-installed panels after a storm. This year they want to charge $185 to pop in one panel. Not impressed... I am covering up the "free" advertisement sign that they hung on our fence without asking.... read more

They wrote us up a bill of sale for the fence that they put up. Then , when it was all done, said that they under estimated the material charges and told me that I owed another $800. I paid it. But will never, ever use them again. read more

We called Chelsey Fence & Deck to get a quote to remove our existing deck and rebuild. When I called to set up a time for an estimate, I got a bad first impression from the the receptionist who answered the phone. I figured she was just one person and surely my experiences with the rest of the company would be good. So I let that slide and continued with getting an estimate. Corey W. came to our home, measured everything, and gave us an estimate before leaving. $96,000 for a deck! Double the price we received from other companies. After looking over the written quote, we realized Corey W. measured our deck wrong. He measured our deck as a 27 x 27 square deck (782 sq ft) when it is not. Our deck is not even a square shape. Other quotes we received from reputable companies measured our deck as 344 sq and using the correct layout of our deck. Corey W. used completely wrong measurements. I sent an e-mail to Corey W. after my husband and I looked at the written quote, compared it to other quotes we received, and my husband going outside and remeasuring the entire deck. My e-mail that was sent to Corey asked if he could contact us to discuss the quote. I sent the email at 10:00 PM thinking he would receive it the next day when he went to work. Nope. He responded right away at 10:00 PM! Since I didn't include any details in my e-mail of what we wanted to discuss, I guess he thought we were going to go with his way overpriced and improperly measured quote and therefore responded immediately thinking he was going to get a massive commission. And yes, their sales men work on commission. The next morning, Corey W. called my husband and the improper measurements were discussed. Corey acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and said it had been a long day for him. He said he would get a revised estimate to us later that morning. Great, right? Nope. A few days later and we haven't received a revised estimate or any communication from Chelsey Fence & Deck. Between everything that has happened (starting with the receptionist), I believe this was done on purpose to rip us off thinking we wouldn't know any better. As soon as Corey and the company realized they weren't going to get an extra $45,000 in "free money"- they were MIA! I am not usually one to leave bad reviews as I am a small business owner myself. However, I recommend not even calling this company and finding someone else to work with. read more

I'd give negative stars if I could. These folks did my privacy fence 5 years ago. The main gate never closed right. They came out 3 times to fix it. Worse each time since the footings were disturbed. I finally gave up amd installed a second drop bar. Called them 2 months ago. After several calls got a guy to come out ... I told them I'd pay again if they'd fix it right. Have call 3 times since and spoke with them. No quote, no call back, nothing. This afternoon the mower guy didn't drop the extra rod and the wind blew the gate open. My dog is now missing, still after 5 hours of searching. Thanks for the great gate installation Chesley, and for your inability to honor your installation or even call a customer back, who is willing to pay for you to fix your mistakes, with a quote. read more

Before you make your deposit just know it takes almost 2 months before you can get a install! They do not tell you that part, and the sales manger is VERY RUDE when it comes to trying to come out of your contract read more

There's a good reason why this company has such a bad rating. The only good thing about this company was the communication they had with me. The unfortunate part was it was always bad news. The fence was up about a month later than I was told by the owner who quoted me. I paid more and went with this company because the owner made me feel confident in his company and he assured me it would start promptly. That was not the case. They built my fence on the neighbors property and said it would cost my $1400 to move the 30 ft approximately of fence. That's the price they gave me after I told them I would dig all the holes myself. I would expect a "professional" fence installing company to understand property lines, or at least inform me that I needed to locate them myself. On top of all that, the customer service woman was extremely rude and condescending to me over the phone. To make that even better, both people I talked to about her were completely aware of how she is, yet she is still talking that way to customers. Well I have been pretty unsatisfied with everyone so far. I had a wood looking vinyl privacy fence put in with a double gate. The fence itself is very nice although has alot of spaces underneath where do can get out. The gate was not made wide enough. No handle was put on either. Had problems with it flying open so finally put in ground locks on both sides of gate to hold it. A year ago I was told yes, the gate was made too small so new prices were ordered. That was the manager that came out to look. After calling 5 times and getting put off, their team came out and adjusted the gate so there was no gap in the middle but 5 inch gaps on each side!! Right after they left the left gate fell off since it was adjusted too far. A year later and still no parts!!! I hate it!!! read more

In short, I've been very happy in my dealings with Chesley. I initially had Chesley put up a fence for me in 2013. The estimator came when scheduled and was able to write the estimate up on the spot and provide it to me right then and there. We scheduled the installation for as soon as it was dry enough to come out and that's when the crew came and installed the fence. This year our needs changed with the subtraction of a dog and addition of a child and so I called Chesley to move a section of the fence to give me more fenced in area. Again the estimator showed up on time and provided the estimate on the spot. Again we scheduled the fence install for as soon as there was dry weather and again they showed in a timely fashion. The installation crew listened when I cautioned about a buried pipe that was not marked by the underground utility locate and it was not damaged. One downspout drain tile was damaged but in all fairness to the crew, it was not marked and popped up in an unexpected location. They fixed that on the spot. Based on my experience, I'd recommend Chesley to anyone looking for a local fence contractor. read more

Chesley was extremely responsive to inquiries when my fence was first installed in 2015. However, as the years went inquiries too longer and longer. I have been waiting on warrantee work since April 2019 and they have not responded back to the fence manufacturer on labor costs to continue processing the claim...disappointing to say the least. read more

My experience was almost identical to the other reviewer. We are also a military family and had a similar experience. We set up an appointment and he was at least 30 minutes late. I see their fences all over the area and they came highly recommended. He was very nice but didn't really ask what I was looking for, other than material. I simply said we want to keep the cost low and use aluminum. He assured me that he would email me a quote. He was the second company to come out and give an estimate. The first (through Home Depot ) gave me an estimate on site, and went through their catalog with me. After about a week I had not received an email with quote. I called the company to inquire, it was a Friday. The lady said she didn't see a quote on his desk and assured me they would contact me "first thing Monday morning". I asked how long it typically takes to get a quote. She said "a couple of weeks". I was dumbfounded. I said we have kids and dogs, we need a quote soon or we will go elsewhere. (Mr. Chelsy had said it takes a about 4 weeks once we sign contract to build fence. This would mean a fence would take 2 months to get installed.) That was the last time I've spoken with them. No call back. No email. We went with Home Depot. read more

Excellent experience! We just had a new fence installed after a year of looking at different companies. It is a 54" heavy duty residential wrought iron powdered coated aluminum fence and this company did an excellent job of not only coming out and helping us pick the right fence for our needs but the install crew did an amazing job despite the cold and rainy weather. The fence was installed to my approval and believe me, that's a tough thing to do ! Will definitely recommend to anyone ! read more

No follow up...apparently they "forgot" twice!! I initially called Chesley Fence to get a quote after seeing their signs on their fences that they have completed all over the area. Once I finally got everything set up in my house, I decided to call for a quote on a PVC fence back around November 2012. Over the phone I talked to Ms. Chesley who booked the appointment. Mr. Chesley came out to my house to take measurements, and was about a half hour late, at least. With me being in the military, I would assume that a business that wants your business would do everything to make a good impression...it was unbelievable. Mr. Chesley asked me if I received any material in the mail, and I told him I never did. He assured me that he would make sure I received it along with the quote via e-mail. I never received any type of contact after that meeting; I wasn't sure what happened. I was asking how the fence process goes, and I was asking about the features of the fence. I'm not sure if I asked too many questions since this is a huge investment due to the possible thousands of dollars I would have spent with them...I wasn't rude or anything like that which leaves me wondering if they would have taken my money and ran. Later on in the beginning of 2013 (somewhere around the month of February) at the Belleville, IL homeshow, I ran into Ms. Chesley. She greeted me and asked me if I was interested in their product. I did tell her about the incident from above, and she seemed concerned I was forgotten about. She took down all my contact information (address, e-mail, and phone) and said that they would get that quote to me and contact me as soon as she got back to the office...now it is near the end of April 2013 and I have not even received any type of "junk mail" in my mailbox from Chesley Fence. With my multiple attempts at making contact with them, more than any customer should do for the type/cost of product they provide, I don't think I would trust Chesley fence with my project. If they are going to lie to me and forget about me, can I trust them with my money or construction on my property? I've never had this type of experience with a company, and I never thought I would write a review on a company without having the opportunity to even getting to the purchasing portion of the transaction. Don't do business here. Will not come to your house for estimate. You have to do your own measurements for a repair and send pictures also. After sending the information they never call. Then they claim I never sent an email. I resend the information no call back. They tell me they are very busy but want my business. Never any apologies. I would go somewhere else. So like the other reviews the estimate that was promised in two days never came. I then called spoke to a nice lady. She tried to contact the man who came out . He didn't get back to her. He finally returned my call. I answered the phone Hello. .. he said yes this is so and so with the company name. I said yes hello. . He said I hear you have a problem with me not getting back to you soon enough. . And let me tell you all this wad said so nasty I was taken back. I said well yes sir you said this would be two days he then ranted some more and then said I don't think we should do business with you. You won't be happy. My feeling was because we were not getting the top of the line fencing he could let business go and its not even his business hes just a manager. Btw we were getting other things done. I just can't believe they are still in business. My husband did go out to the office when he was there he apparently was having issues with another customer that he was yelling at. HORRIBLE customer service!!!! The man who answers the phone is extremely rude! They never call back. Initially, they seemed like a nice family business. We wanted to use a locally owned family business but now regret it!! We had a fence installed last fall. I KNEW it was bad when we found their workers having a family BBQ under our deck!!! Since then, our fence has fallen down, split, and panels have popped out over a dozens times. Fencing is important and needs to be functional - do not waste your time or money with this company. Sent an email a week later because I still had not heard back, and was told if "I was so anxious, to look it up online." They claim to "value" repeat customers but have a horrible way of showing it. All I ever expect from a contractor is to "say what they'll do and then do what they say". They did not do this in several respects. I had to have the utilities marked twice because it took so long for them to finally execute the contract, the painted markings had faded too badly to discern. Having just power washed the patio and sidewalk, apparently their installers thought it was a great place to remove the mud from their boots. They brought the wood for the fence and stacked it in the back yard and then left it for 2 weeks which killed off a large area of the lawn. After they finally completed the task they immediately began badgering for the remainder of the payment. After meeting with the owner of Chesley Fence and getting his personal assurance that the job would be completed the following week, a month and a half later it finally got completed. They never returned a single one of my phone messages (they did eventually email replies, but NOT what I had requested). Shop around, there has to be a fencing contractor out there that actually does what they say they will do. read more
