Many clothes were damaged, and the tag did not mention the damaged item. I understand that items are vintage, but it should be disclosed of the condition of the clothing. The v store was very hot and packed with people. I was unable to look at everything because shoppers kept bumping into me or cutting me off unfortunately. The clothes were not very organized either. It was hard to look through them. If they did crowd control and limit the shoppers inside, I may have had a better experience. This has been the most disappointing shop during my Scotland holiday so far.

Armstrong's is sprawled out in a vast space, but I quite liked being able to pick through the packed railings in here without having to travel too far! Garments are nicely ordered, well displayed (as you would expect from an Armstrong's store) and have the same fun, frilly vintage appeal. There are spangles galore, not to mention a decent selection of beaten up cowboy boots. It's worth noting that the clothes shipped off to this outlet are considerably cheaper than in Armstrong's proper, with sparkly 70s disco boob tubes coming in at a fiver! They had some nice leather jackets cheaper than I've seen elsewhere, and a good selection of clothing for guys. They had some great offers on denim shirts - if you buy a denim jacket you get one for free! The shirts were dirt cheap as it was and with denim making a big comeback this season, I can see their Lee shirts selling out faster than a speeding bullet. The staff were friendly and relaxed, going about their business while leaving me free to browse. It's a bit more laid back than Armstrong's and with more bargains. Love it!

I personally am a fan of their leather post man bags.My flatmate loved their shoes, which were in very good condition, and not to mention affordable, considering they were leather boots. Their cashmere jumpers are quite nice, and they have a good selection of men's clothing as well. Prices vary depending on the garment in question, and their are some true vintage pieces in here. Whether or not you would ever wear them, or if you question if vintage shops are just over-priced second-hand shops I will leave that to you. I still like the quirky finds in this shop and it's down-to-earth attitude to it's stock. (they even have 70's disco glitter boots for your Abba fever party- not just brand stuff)

It's such a shame for a small village to have hardly any facilities available to passing trade our group was glad to see this place, that has one side that is used as an antique shop and the other for a tea room. The cafe has not got a hot food licence so can only offer sandwiches and a bowl of soup if you are lucky, we where at least able to get a good cup of tea and something to eat to recharge our batteries. My friend had a sandwich with the only choice available being cheese and tomato, but there is a good selection of home baking on display. The lady that served us was nice and chatty, that made our visit a pleasant experience.

Not only did the owners stay open a little later for us they also allowed us to bring in our wee dog and we were then treated to an assortment of homemade soup, freshly baked cakes and teas and coffees all at a very reasonable price. The two ladies running the shop are just lovely - really friendly and chatty added to the whole experience and you are surrounded by beautiful, ornate vintage homeware and oddities. It's like a step back in time this little gem of a place where your tea is served in beautiful china tea cups and saucers in a homely enviroment. Definitely worth stopping in if you are passing through / in the area.

Lots of animal prints, lots of sequins and polyester, like any second hand shop really. but for some reason Herman Brown seems to be slightly uglier (which as we all know, is a great thing) having never found an excuse to wear a 150kg dress I'm sad to say I've bought NOTHING in the 800 times I've been in but it's still great fun trying stuff on.. There was granny jumpers aplenty, batwing sweaters, suede jackets and a decent selection for the boys. It's not overwhelmingly busy with stock, leaving you free to browse without your brain being bombarded with a ton of information. There is definitely enough to satisfy your vintage cravings however, and loads of accessories for you to dig into your wallets for. There is a good supply of boots, buckles and bangles, not to mention half a ton of gorgeous brooches in a glass cabinet underneath the cash desk. You can always tell vintage suppliers who hire experienced staff, and Herman Brown has that. They are a very approachable bunch who are informative if you want to find out more about an item. Herman Brown is full of goodies, and being established for over twenty years it's safe to say they didn't jump on a bandwagon - they built it!

When you walk in, you clearly get the vibe that this is a university student's frequent haunt. As we shopped here, students came in and out, receive a discount, and generally have their needs met with the types of clothing available. However, the selection of clothes in the store isn't so student oriented that a wider audience won't be able to find something of interest. The first floor is more women's oriented, with tartan featuring prominently. The second floor is men's, which had some decent selections of Fred Perrys and the like. When we were there, the store was staffed just by a couple girls on the first floor, and they were pretty deep in conversation with each other. After hearing a number of good things about the 60s floral print skirt I tried on, I had to buy it! It just had to be done. Every item of clothing in here is in fantastic condition and the owner certainly knows her stuff. The designs she chooses to stock are everlasting, timeless classics to fit in wardrobes of all generations. Marching to the beat of its own drum, Elaine's is truly a wonderful wee vintage emporium.

I used to really like shopping for vintage clothes. Then I kind of went off it. It's an expensive hobby and there's a lot of shops out there with unjustifiably high prices. And, truth be told, some of it isn't very nice, regardless of its age. I think this is something that vintage traders forget. So, it can be a little bit pretentious, the vintage malarkey. I hadn't said goodbye to vintage shopping; rather just a 'see ya a little more infrequently' since fewer items were catching my eye. So, today, this little shop stands out to me simply because I can't see a name on the shopfront. I had to satisfy my curiosity. I had to go in. And then, I see it: a beautiful, puffy, polkadot skirt; the kind of skirt I've dreamt about. I touch it, and the polkadots are velvety soft; a delight. Elaine prompted me to try it on, sharing with me that it was a genuine 1950's piece. I simply could not say no. I've only fallen in love with an item of clothing like this just once before and that was a floor length Frank Usher fringed dress from Mr Ben's in Glasgow. And, of course, you already know I bought the skirt. It's a beauty and Elaine made me feel a million dollars, as I popped out to give her a twirl. She insisted I let her see, after I'd feared it was too small for me. I'm so glad that it fit perfectly. I love it. The price was reasonable and one I was happy to pay for a genuine vintage piece. You'd easily pay the same for a new Topshop skirt but, of course, you'd leave without that super feeling that comes with shopping local. And I just love how unassuming Elaine's is. - What a gem of a shop!
