If you have read any of my other reviews, you may recall that my dental journey has not been an easy one. When I first came to Dr. Susanin's practice in Devon, I was having issues with a root canal that was ~ 7 years old. Dr. Susanin was able to identify the issues, and provided me with a series of options for moving forward. Together, we decided that given the history of my (multiple) root canals, re-treatment would likely fail in the too near future for it to be worth the time and financial investment. Instead, we decided to move forward with removing the tooth and getting an implant. It has been so refreshing to be very informed through the process of my dental decision making. Often, with health care professionals, I feel that I am not provided much insight, or the opportunity to understand what is going on. That is not the case with Dr. Susanin. He has fully informed me each step along the way and allowed me to be the decision maker while providing his professional opinion. Dr. Susanin has been dependable, easy to get an appointment with, and available for phone calls with questions and checking-in on my healing process. I'm returning to his practice today to get post extraction x-rays and evaluations before moving forward with my implant. I am incredibly grateful to have found a Dr. Susanin's practice and will remain a loyal patient until he retires.

The office is beautiful and comfortable, the staff made me feel like they were genuinely happy to see me and Dr. Smith was relaxed, took the time to listen to my concerns. He identified the issue and addressed it genuinely without rushing. Unfortunately, my own experience didn't live up to that reputation. As a transplant recipient, I called to schedule an appointment and was prepared to pay entirely out of pocket. I was upfront about my health history immediately and shared that I did not believe I would need surgery or drastic intervention but wanted to take preventive steps to take care of some issues that had come up. Then, after giving the office access to my records I was told my case wouldn't be taken on specifically because of my complex medical history. I understand every provider has the right to decide which cases fall within their comfort zone, but it was disheartening to be turned away specifically because of health circumstances that led to needing periodontal care in the first place? I'd have appreciated more transparency about what specifically made my case a concern, being told upfront when I disclosed my health history that Dr. Astolfi does not work with patients who have complex medical conditions, or even a referral to someone equipped to treat patients like myself. Patients navigating complex medical situations are often the ones who most need to find a provider willing to work with them, not around them. I hope this feedback is useful for the practice going forward.

So I had to pay for the exam and now I have to find another periadontist and most likely have to have another exam. They should have told me at the front desk when I arrived when I gave them my insurance card that they did not accept my insurance and it would cost me $150 for the visit. If they had done that, I would have just left. The experience felt very predatory and I would not recommend this office whether they accept your insurance or not.
