Pretty great, inexpensive, family owned campground with larger wooded sites. Each come with picnic table and fire ring. It's a pay per person, not per site here which depending on the size of your party can be a great thing! I had littles with me who were free of charge so the night wound up costing a mere $10 The showers were free and hot and the restrooms in general were clean. Don't miss the hilarious signs scattered about! Also, near the restrooms you will find free gallons of water they ask you to take back to your site as a precaution if you're going to light a fire. It's no frills and contains no extras like a pool or playground which was fine by us. The did have some grounds for walking and a disc golf area. There's much to do it the area so activities here are not really needed. The gorge is just down the road...great hiking and water rafting. We arrived later at night after the office was closed and were able to simply check in via text, set up, and pay cash in the am. I would still call and give them a heads up if you think you may be arriving after dark. We chatted with the kind owner in the morning and he gave us directions to a hidden climbing spot just up the road by the New River Gorge. Don't be afraid to ask for some locals only tips! *The noise you'll hear...crunching leaves around your tent at night are deer. Black bears are more rare here. Still be safe with your food storage. I would definitely stay here again when I'm in the area! Even though it was the middle of summer this visit, it was shady enough with all of the trees that we enjoyed a cool, night's sleep. read more

I got there after communicating with the owner and when I got there, no one around. Just a box that said drop your cash here. It felt sketchy so I drove around the property and it was not what I would consider a campground. It looks like somebody's yard with camp type spots trying to be made. And when I drove by the shower house, there were three men (men, not kids), in their underwear out front of it!! Definitely not staying there. Might be good for some, but the day I was there definitely was not good for me. I moved on down the road. read more

This place was really great! We appreciated how quick they were to respond when we showed up on Sunday and gave them a call. It's a local, family-run facility that is intentionally bare bones. I am not a veteran camper (this was my second time) but I felt super comfortable here. The vibe is relaxed and you feel secluded once you are in your campsite. They are all pretty far away from each other and they have lots of trees in between. They did not have any potable water so bring some gallons or water bottles. $10 per person (two of us). Would come back and recommend this to those in the area! read more

This is the best area of New River Gorge in my opinion. You have a really nice mix of outdoor activities -- the bridge, mountain biking at Arrowhead ( you can bike lots of places at NRG, which I have, but I've learned the hard way to choose safer trails such as Arrowhead), climbing at endless wall, hiking, driving down to Fayette Station at the bottom of the gorge for a dip or s short paddle, river rafting, checking out the art in Fayetteville, or getting a meal in Fayetteville. As for camping, there are several campgrounds in the area, but only two that I would consider. This is one of them. I camped here and would definitely go back. Campsites are well-spaced and wooded, like NPS campsites. There is no electric ( good, no boomboxes or any of that crap ). Seth is easily one of the nicest people you could meet. I drove a little too fast a couple times. Sorry Seth. Gotta keep it under 10 MPH. I do like NPS campgrounds, but the only NPS campground near the Fayetteville and the bridge is the group campground, and it's a little too close to the bridge and highway. PLEASE NOTE: The rate now is $15 per person, and for a reason. It is not $10 per person. I don't know when it changed, but Seth doesn't have much of an on-line presence and the info I found on 3rd party websites such as Yelp, was wrong. Unlike NPS campsites, these campsites have different sized tent pads. Some have tent platforms. It makes a difference what sized tent you'll be using, how many tents, and how many people. read more

Chestnut Creek is family run and lovely. This is my go to place to stay at the new river gorge. You can trust Seth, one of the owners, to do right by you and make you feel welcome. The facilities are clean, and Seth is quick to respond if you have any questions. Great location in relation to the climbing crags, town, and grocery stores. The grounds are lovely and what you want out of a camping experience. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Chestnut Creek Campground is a great campground. We stayed 4 nights in the off season and had a great time. Seth was super helpful and lent us some climbing guidebooks that we forgot at home. The bathhouse wasn't super new and up to date, but it definitely met our needs, especially for the price. There were a multitude of quite funny signs everywhere. This is the second year I have stayed at chestnut creek and I can say I do enjoy every moment. If you are looking for a nice quiet and spacious campground you have found it. The campsites are all wooded with tall mature trees. The sites are clean and very well maintained but do not have electric. Sorry. The bath house is the best maintained campsite faculty I have seen. The down side is that the showers are timed with the heaters and they only run in prime time hours. The campground is under new ownership, the old owners daughter, but same rules do apply. If you follow them, you'll have a peaceful relaxing stay. read more

We always stay at the Chestnut Creek Campground when we go climbing at the New. We've been staying there a couple of times a year for about 4 years and it is always quiet and clean. Secluded camping as close to amenities as you would want to be on a camping trip, with large wooded campsites. With 3 kids, you can imagine that our tent has a pretty large footprint, but most of the sites have plenty of room for it. I believe that every site has a table, firering and trash can. The rest rooms are clean and typically have plenty of hot water, even on crowded weekends. I happened to pause to write this review while I'm booking our next stay. See you there. read more

We had a good stay at Chestnut Creek, but there were some detractors. When we arrived, there was a plethora of signs giving explicit instructions on how to do seemingly every task (which I view as a positive). The reservation board, however, had dates from the previous week and had yet to be updated (by Wednesday of the next week). No big deal, really, but all-in-all the contrast of rules to disorder was confusing. Knowing now that there has been a recent change in management, it makes more sense. The manager seems like a great guy, but in contrast to an earlier review, we only saw him when we went up to the general store. We never saw him in the campsites, and the office was never occupied any time we stopped buy during our 4-day stay. This is just a contrast to how other places I have been run. The worst aspect of this was that the men's restroom trash was full when I arrived and only got fuller without being emptied. Same thing for the trash at the individual sites. Also, due to various plumbing problems, two nights while there I had to take frigid showers. This was a disappointment as on site showers were one of the main deciding factors when choosing Chestnut over AAC. On the plus side, there are several nice campsites from which to choose. The location, north of the bridge, makes it a convenient base from where you can launch all sorts of day trips. A great local spot, the Burrito Bar, is right next door and a great place for day-end activities. Despite some of the problems at Chestnut, It's a fun place to stay and I'll likely stay there in the future. read more

Our group had 4 tents and he was able to give two side-by-side sites, 10 and 11. The sites were a little sloped but fine for one night's sleep. I've stayed here about 7 times in the past several years on trips to the New. As previous reviewers have mentioned, Bryan is on the stricter side of things (he is a former schoolteacher), but generally I think that's what makes this campground so great. Everything is very well-maintained, the bath house is very clean, the campsites themselves are lovely and, as a result, the people who stay here tend to be low-key and friendly as well. read more

I will forever stay at the Chestnut Creek Campground when coming to the NRG! The owners, Seth and Sierra, are an incredibly kind and welcoming couple, and their campground feels very safe and happy. My friends and I stayed here during bridge day. Although the area was packed we were very surprised at how quiet and open the campground was. We were able to walk to all the bridge day stuff easily from our site. The site was well maintained and the general store was well priced. If we are ever through here we most definitely will be staying here again. read more

A great campground! No hookups, but the shower house is very nice. There were 3 stalls and 3 showers with dressing areas. Very clean and well maintained. They also have a sink area to wash your dishes. Very pretty, lots of shade in every site. Campfire ring, picnic table. Couple of large shelters scattered throughout. The office was closed but the general store runs the camp so just a short hike up there. There is a hiking and biking guide, a rock climbing guide and a bouldering guide for your use. Which was very handy. Bundles of wood for sale are $5 - approx 7 or 8 pieces in each bundle. There is frisbee golf course and a hiking trail on site. read more

Campsites are spacious and the area is beautiful. We stayed in a covered site during a rainy night and were very grateful to be warm and dry. Depending on where you stay it can be a bit of a walk to the restrooms, which are clean and have great hot water. The campsite is family owned and we could tell that it is a real labor of love for them. Seth was friendly, kind, and full of recommendations for the surrounding area. As a non-climber traveling with climbers, I really appreciated that he had plenty of ideas for all of us to enjoy. read more

Brian is quirky as hell, but he's a darn decent guy and he runs a tight ship. The camping is rustic and without electricity or other sorts of hook-ups, as camping should be. Take your RV somewhere else, please. I've stayed here maybe half a dozen times on climbing trips, and once with a big group of college friends. I've never had a less than lovely experience, and the bathrooms have never been anything less than spotless. If you want to party late and loud, you'll be happier if you stay somewhere else (and so will Brian and everybody else at Chestnut Creeks), but I don't know where else to suggest, because Brian's is the only place I've stayed at the New. read more

I have stayed at most if not all the campgrounds in the New River Gorge area over the past 9 years. Chestnut is def the best value in the region. Good price, well organized clean facilities. Brian ran a solid campground and it's great to see that his daughter and her husband are carrying on the tradition. As others have said. Perfect, out of the way camping in a chaotically busy area! My brother and i rolled in on our motorcycles around dark from a full days travel. The roads into the campground were partially paved but went to gravel, the terrain was hilly but not difficult to maneuver because of the well packed gravel road. The owner was extremely helpful, Seth gave us a few sites to choose from to find the site that best fit our special parking needs. He helped get wood from the office to our camp and brought a little tinder to help get started. He also gave a great recommendation for dinner at the Burrito Bar ( MUST SEE SUNSETS) The campsite was generously sized with mature trees. Private enough that we could have a conversation and not worry about other campers being bothered. The bathrooms were clean and the showers were hot. This was everything we were looking for in a primitive campsite. Thanks Seth, We will be back! read more

Whoaa this place ruined our last two days in the New. Do not stay here! Ok the the grounds are nice and the facilities are clean but the owner Brian is a patronizing OCD sufferer. His paranoia drives him to put up notes with rules and threats literally everywhere. I have never had so much to read in a campsite. He runs the place like a prison camp and constantly drives round at night checking if people are following his rules. We are very low profile and very quiet campers and followed all his rules but he still managed to come by our site every morning to complain about something. It was really getting on our nerves. Do not stay here, there are plenty of nice alternatives, but if you have to then don't pay him upfront! If you have to leave early for some reason or emergency (the super storm Sandy in our case) he will not refund! read more

I had a wonderful experience here. My boyfriend and I stayed two nights here just after Memorial Day weekend, and it was exactly what we wanted - quiet camping in the woods, friendly owners, a really amazingly well-stocked general store (lots of gluten-free items!!), and great rock climbing. The owner was relaxed and friendly when directing us over the phone, and then came by to personally say hello when we had set up camp. He even lent us his climbing guide to take out to the rock with us for a day. I will most definitely come back here any time I am in the area. Highly recommended. read more

Great campground for tent/car campers climbing, hiking, or rafting the New River Gorge. Seth and Sierra are super nice and maintain the place very conscientiously, but in a laid-back manner. Don't worry about all the signs--just don't be a jerk. The hot showers alone are worth the price of admission. Nice sites with picnic table and firepit and level spots to pitch tents. And the Lansing General Store is open till 9 pm for beer and other necessaries. Long walk/short drive to The Junkyard; 10 min drive to the Bubba City and cemetery parking lots. Will happily stay there again next time we climb the New! read more

My friends and I stayed here for Bridge Day 2k16 and had a great experience. All of us are from out of state, but have spent a lot of time in Fayetteville and the surrounding areas and stayed at other campgrounds. This was by far the best any of us had stayed at. It was well maintained, it had readily available firewood, and the bathroom facility was clean and well stocked. All of the Bridge Day activities were within walking distance, as well as the Endless Wall trail (one of my favorite trails in the world). We will definitely stay at this campsite whenever we travel to the New River Gorge. Thanks for a great stay! read more
