How could becoming a living voodoo doll cure me of my ailments? After much urging from a friend to try acupuncture (since I have a condition that responds poorly to conventional treatments), I decided one time can't hurt. At her referral, I saw David Schiman. He is a very easy going person who will put all your fears at ease and answer your questions to the best of his abilities. After a brief intake during your first time there, including an extensive medical history check and some questions about what you're looking to improve, you'll be brought into the treatment room where the fun starts. Like I said, I was skeptical. What happened next completely changed my mind. Since my shoulders were very tight that day, I ended up getting two needles in the trapezius area of my shoulders. At first they spasmed badly and actually scared me for a moment, but then they relaxed. Just totally relaxed! I'm not sure how this actually worked, if a nerve was hit and that relaxed them, but it was like a miracle. I won't lie; some of the needles will hurt. Some will bleed. Some will fall out or irritate your skin. Just be prepared for it. Once all the needles are in it is somehow very calming. I like that it's forced meditation in a way - you can't move because of the needles, so you have to calm your mind in other ways than physically. After a session I always leave completely relaxed, as if I'd slept a whole night's sleep in under an hour. This practice is very clean, very well lit, and despite being a place where you get stuck full of needles it is never scary. The location itself is right on Main Street in Manayunk, and even though it's on the third floor of an office building it's still very easy to find. If you ever were interested in acupuncture but unsure if it's for you, I would definitely recommend you see David. I'm a believer now, and feel like this location is a great place to start for any beginner.

The only downside is that you never know who you'll be in the acupuncture room with. It's an open room with maybe 6-8(? I forget, it's been a while) acupuncture chairs---hence the "community" part. Most times the people you're in the room with are quiet and the experience is relaxing, and other times you could get someone who is coughing or clearing their throat the whole time or just generally noisy, which could hinder the relaxation portion of your experience. All in all, 85% of the time you get a good group.

I began to chat with Dr. Snyder about some pain I'd been experiencing in my neck and back. These issues had been with me for years and I assumed they were just the price of growing older. Dr. Snyder immediately took interest in me as a patient and as a person. She listened, she walked me through the science behind back pain and chiropractic adjustments. She taught me that a healthy, well-maintained spine would improve my life and that my pain was not, in fact, an inevitable part of life. Six months after our initial appointment, I am 100% pain free! I can roll over in bed any direction I chose! I can turn my neck any way I want! And I have had ZERO sciatic flare ups! Dr. Snyder has a calming, pleasant demeanor. She has comforting hands. At first, everything seemed great. My first two appointments were very educational - I was shown a video, talked about how the back/spine works, etc. I was informed that my shoulder issue was caused by some hip subloxations and was directed to come twice a week at $50 a pop for the foreseeable future. I was provided a laundry list of things that were wrong with me and promised that chiropractic care was the cure. The third visit seemed okay but I woke up the next day in a worse position than I started. The pain in my neck, back, and shoulders was so intense I could hardly do my job where I legit sit at a desk all day. I couldn't sleep. I called out of work one day and moved up my appointment. I even scheduled a massage with this office, hoping that would facilitate in my recovery. I got the worst paid massage of my life. Exboyfriends did a better job and they were just trying to coerce sex out of me. Once I let my nephew use my back as a road for his toy trucks while I laid on the floor and that was a better massage. I tried addressing my issues with my chiropractor who simply brushed me off, stating simply "sometimes it gets worse before it gets better" and added a heating pad to my back after my adjustment. I was still in a lot of pain but a couple of visits with a licensed massage therapist and an acupuncturist mostly cured me. In sharing my woes with others, it turns out at least 2 other people I know had similar experiences. They were also told their legs were uneven - they were shown the same video, they were placed in similar treatment regimes, etc. They also were not satisfied by the services provided by Stone Bridge Wellness. For anyone reading this (I'm sure they have a paid Yelp account and this review will get deleted if it even gets posted), I just advise you to do a little more research than I did. If you're in pain, it can be easy to get swayed by folks who promise relief. In my case, and the case of at least two friends, Stone Bridge Wellness was not the answer unless you don't mind suffering worse than when you started and you have at least $100/week to blow.
