It is a shame my first review has to be a negative one, but what happened today at CC Wine and Spirits compelled me to sign up and voice my experience. After what happened today, I cannot recommend this store to anyone. I used to put up with the attitude from the guys here because they had a relatively decent selection and were convenient for me, but no longer. The people who work here, at least on the management level, are some of the rudest people I have dealt with in this town. I am in the hospitality industry here in DC (tourism is very important for local business), and I was shocked at the attitude expressed by one member of the management here. I've a friend who was visiting from out of town, and I was driving his car. The parking lot was fairly busy, and I parked by Bread and Chocolate's rear door (I was picking up a call in order). Immediately, the manager of the liquor came out and started screaming at me that I could not park there. He became verbally abusive and used profanities many times in his rant. I attempted to explain that I was going in to pick up a called in order, and that I would be in and out. He told me to wait for a parking space, and that if I did not move my car he would have to call the cops on me. I told him flat out to do that. I also volunteered that he could call a tow truck and have me towed if he wished. Admittedly, I was rather flippant in my remarks. What came next though made my jaw drop. He told me to go back home to my "bullshit redneck backwards state" and to never come back to DC because my "type" is not welcome. I responded with a pleasant "Fuck you, I'm from here" and continued inside B&C. When I cam back out, I found the manager standing behind my car, and I had to rather forcefully suggest that he move. He complied, and went back inside the liquor store mumbling curses toward me. Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits, you have lost at least one customer (me). There is no reason, ever, to attack a person like you did me. The reprehensible attitudes you expressed today serve no place in our fine town, and are a stain on the work that we in the hospitality industry do to ensure a positive experience for all visitors to Washington, DC. This is the place in DC to find obscure beer. It's the liquor store equivalent of the Brickskeller. When you order beer, they call down to their basement stockroom, and the stockers send up the request via a dumbwaiter. Very medieval cool! However, Most times I have purchased there, the wrong beer came up the mystery shaft, so watch out for that. But, can't argue with the selection! read more

This is one of the best wine and beer places I have ever been to, so I feel very lucky to live 5 min walk away from it. At the first glance store looks like any liquor store, nothing special, however after you spend a couple of minutes looking for a selection of wine or beer, you will realize that they have a serious selection of both. I can really judge hard alcohol drinks as these are not my favorites, but I have had bought these there too. The prices ranges can fit anyones budget and people working there are just great. They are very knowledgable and friendly. I am yet to find an equivalent of Chevy Chase Liquors in Hoboken! read more

Chevy Chase is a beautiful store that could be much better than it is. All the staff members should be paid to take customer service lessons from Magruder's. I'm a beer and bourbon guy. Beer - Their selection is okay, but as previously mentioned, you can find a better selection a block north at Magruders. One of the nice things about Chevy Chase WAS that they used to do lists for limited release beers. They no longer do this because they had too many people not picking up their share. As if they couldn't resolve this by either forcing people to pre pay, or just calling the no showers and saying, "You have a week to pick up your stash or we're putting it on the shelf". Bourbon - I walked in here today after a very nice man at Magruder's told me they had just received this years allotment of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. He offered me a bottle of 12 year for $110. You read that right, $110. I live in Montgomery county. Do you know what a bottle of 12 year goes for in montgomery county? $43. You can get a bottle of 20 year in Montgomery county for $100 for gods sake. So I declined his offer and marched down to Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits. I paced for 5-10 minutes without being greeted or asked if I needed assistance. After scanning the beer selection without finding anything interesting, I approached a disgruntled bald man with glasses working behind the counter at the front door who was talking to an attractive blonde. I said, "Did you get any Pappy, and how much does it cost?". "It's supposed to be here today. I'm waiting on my shipment. I don't know what I'm going to get.", he replied as if it was the 300th time he'd heard the question today. I asked him if he knew what it was going to cost when it came in. He replied, "I don't even know what my costs are yet, so no." I stared at him in an attempt to burn a hole thru his head but, sadly, I'm not superman or cyclops. He treated me like I should be grateful I was even allowed in a store that would be receiving this nectar of the gods. I thought about how and if I wanted to reply and decided the best thing I could do is never give them my business again, and let the world know on the internet that you should take your business elsewhere, because they don't deserve it. read more

sorry I have to give this shlthole 1 star. What a bunch of prIcks. I drove up on Thanksgiving. Saw the "OPEN" sign was on and parked in the back and walked directly to the back door. There was a man standing by the door looking down at his phone texting away. Before I could reach the handle he said something in a gruff voice that sounded like "they closed". I had no idea who this guy was and I said "Well the open sign is on and there are customers in the line." then he practically yelled at me "They closed SIR!!" They closed at 4 clock!!" Still looking at his phone. I looked t my watch and it was maybe 4pm, maybe a hair before. So I asked this guy "Do you work here?" and he said "Yes I do SIR!!" to which I replied as civilly as I could considering this ass thinks that screaming SIR at people is being anything close to polite "I can see why you take it so personally then." I walked away but on impulse turned around and asked him "So this store seriously doesn't want another $100 in business from a customer who may or may not have arrived 15 seconds late?" Then this guy started screaming and cussing at me at the top of his lungs. "You go off on me!!" blah, blah, blah "I dont make the fu$cking rules blah blah blah". Top of his lungs on Thanksgiving at a customer. I went to Cleveland Park Liquors and spent $150...those guys are cool. I will never spend another dime there and I doubt any of my family will either and for some reason we USED to go there a lot. read more

Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits is THE place that first turned me on to beer. The ability to buy any beer in the place by the bottle is what makes it unique and awesome. If you have to buy everything in packs, especially if the beer is pricy, it doesn't feel worth the risk. CCWS takes that risk out of the equation for you. If I could give this store six stars, I would. For liquor and wine, I suppose it is ok, but beer is the real attraction here. Finally, I've been going there for 5 years and the same men have been working there the whole time. They know their stuff and will always lend a hand or an opinion if asked. read more

I think the fact that it's payday is probably the reason that beer is a theme of my reviews today. It most certainly trumps "most" things in life and is a joy that should be honored and cherished. While I'm far from being a heavy drinker and in most circles would be considered a social one, we all remember those first few tastes of this wonderful legal libation. Whether we turn to those memories and develop comfort from sipping on recollections of times gone by or we turn to them for their inherent low cost appeal, we turn to them none the less. In today's world where the cultural fabric of our global economy gets further reaching, we could be sampling the offerings from fine breweries in Belgium, United Kingdom, Mexico or the United States in a moments notice. While we all love this aspect and the joys associated from expanding our ever refining palate, our mind periodically wanders back to those fruitful memories of the beers that brought us here. This one goes out to Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller High Life, Old Milwaukee and Schaefer for shaping me into the man that I am today. While we all have our own choices, one thing remains true..... that the way to a mans heart is a healthy dose of man flowers. I live in the neighborhood and stopped in here the other night for a bottle of red, but was very pleasantly surprised to see that they have really upped their game in terms of variety of specialty beers. Tons of great styles/brewers/price range! I did get a bottle of wine, but also walked away with a 12 pack of Sour Hound (excellent) and Victory's Sour Monkey for my husband. The reason for the great selection? New ownership! And the man who helped me was absolutely lovely and pleasant. There are a few decent options for beer and wine on those 2-3 blocks of Connecticut Avenue, but this will now be my go-to place...and apparently they deliver. read more

You almost feel like you're in a speakeasy when you go here. They have any alcohol you could possibly want, but sometimes it's in the secret freezer so you have to ask. Seriously, just try to stump these guys. After months of fruitless searches for my favorite English hard cider (Strongbow), I asked if they had it because I didn't see it on the shelf. The nice floor clerk disappeared into one of the big freezer rooms and came out with a four-pack. Turns out it's only available by request. Apparently it's really hard to get and they have a special supplier. They're one of only one or two liquor stores in the city that sell it. If you love an unusual bottle of wine or beer, or have a really specific and hard to find liquor in mind, you should really make the trip here. Also, if you need advice on a nice bottle of wine to buy as a gift or for a special dinner, the sales staff really knows what they're talking about. read more

This morning was the first and last time I go to this store. I was attracted to it because I heard that they had one of the largest selections of beer in DC. They do in fact have a huge display of beer bottles from around the world. They only display one bottle of each beer they carry. So when you look at the offerings, it seems quite impressive. Then, you ask for something, and they don't have it. I wanted three cases - 1 Hoegarden, 1 Founders Red, and 1 Steelhead Extra Pale Ale. Of these, I was able to get the case of Hoegarden, one six pack of Founders (loose bottles that they put into a random pack holder), and 3 6-packs of the Steelhead. It took about ten minutes from the time I ordered my beer, until the time I was walking out the door. There were five men working, and the store was not crowded in the least. There were two men trying to help me, but they spent more time telling each other how to do things. There I sat for ten minutes watching total incompetence and disregard for customer service unfold. To top it off, what I in fact found hysterical, was that I asked their wine guy if they had any Falanghina wine. He said he'd never heard of it. I was in awe. Really? You are the wine guy in a wine shop, and you haven't heard of a popular Italian white? I even told him it was an Italian white, and he still said he hadn't heard of it. He didn't even bother to walk over to his Italian section to double check if they had any. He said they had pinot grigio. LOL LOL LOL. Thanks buddy. Let me guess, you also know of really unique wine they make in California called Chardonnay that has a really nice oak and butter taste. I'll be going sticking with Paul's and Rodman's on Wisconsin Ave. They have never failed me. Why I strayed, I don't know. read more

Can I give no stars? Complete scam shop - others have detailed their abuse of the living social deal. One could say we, if you look for a deal you get what you get. We've taken similar deals from other neighborhood wine shops and wow, no comparison. You might get 1 or 2 bottles of plonk but you also get some really nice wines - a balance of risk. This place didn't even give 1 bottle of average - all 6 are plonk and not even equal to the price paid. Will never grace their doors again. read more

So, my experience with Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits was a very disappointing one. I very rarely leave reviews, but this place left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wanted to warn other people to go elsewhere. Now, I'm not basing my review on the beer or wine selection, but on their customer service in regards to their recent Living Social deal. It seems that other people here have had similar experiences in dealing with employees... I had an issue printing out my voucher (the number, my name, and some other details got printed out as a bunch of gobbledygook), so before leaving my house I wrote the voucher number down (I've had to do this with other living social deals before--never had an issue with the merchant). When I stepped inside the store and showed the merchant, he glared at me as though I was a criminal trying to pull a fast one on him. He asked if I could show him on my phone--well, no, I don't own a smartphone. He made his displeasure clear, stating that he absolutely needed the name--after offering to, you know, write my name down, he refused and said it wouldn't do. Well, okay--how about I show you on your computer? He very begrudgingly allowed me on his computer, where we reprinted the voucher without issue--of course, the voucher number I had written down was the exact same, but whatever. He finally excepted it and took me into the back. The rest of our interaction was very short. I tried to stay very friendly, but never even smiled at me, or made it apparent that he wanted my business. I don't know if he was sick of his LS customers or what, but I don't care--I had already spent my money on his store, he ought to at least act like it. The worst part was the wine selection that was picked out for the deal--which, by the way, when he gave it to me he just barely slammed it on the countertop--the bottles actually rattled in their container! The wine was all from one winery--fine, whatever. A selection of a couple whites and a couple reds. However, this particular wine is a VERY cheap one--one that I've seen elsewhere sold for $5/bottle. 6 bottles, $45 "deal." You do the math. Very disappointed in general. It did look like the had a good beer selection, but I've seen other wine/beer stores in the area with ones just as good (there is a wine store across the street which has a fantastic selection--we actually did a LS deal with them a year ago, and the experience there was fantastic). Despite being give a coupon for my next visit, I absolutely will not go back. Don't do a Living Social deal and then treat those customers poorly--it will not help your business. read more

This place is near my house so I've gone in it a few times over the past several years. Each time I leave wondering why I bother--their staff is rude, rude, rude! This time, I mean it, I'm not going back. Knowing their reputation for beer, I went in to buy a case of unusual beers for my brother-in-law for Christmas. Although they had more staff on the floor than customers, no one would help me out. They kept referring me to other staff, until I finally got one guy who said he'd be right with me, but then he started arguing with another staffer and finally both walked off. I grabbed some vodka in the meantime and went to the register, thinking I wasn't in a hurry, so I'd get someone up there to help me with the beer I needed. When I was next in line, the staff at the register told the man behind me to come ahead of me, since he had a basket full of wine. I put the vodka back on the shelf and walked out. When I got home, I told my husband about it and he laughed and said he hates the place too (he lived in the neighborhood before we got married). He suggested I go to Circle Liquor instead. So I did and had a lovely person help me select the beer. And I restocked our bar while I was at it, which I probably would have done earlier had someone at Chevy Chase Wine had a clue about customer service. read more

The Living Social deal (Get an assortment of six bottles of wine from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits for $45 (regularly $100) is a COMPLETE RIPOFF. They gave me a box containing 6 bottles, all of 2011 Fox Brook wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, none of them reserves or special labels in any sense. Now, it is quite misleading to pretend that this complies with the offer when all wines come from a single winery (as opposed to various countries as stated in the original offer). But wait, it gets worse: the wines retail for about $5-6 a bottle, so the box does not come even close to a $100 retail value; as a matter of fact the wines are overpriced even at the $45 paid for the deal. I then asked the "wine consultant" how had they figured that the box represented a retail value of $100. At this point he got nervous and it was obvious that he did not want to be quoted, but hinted that he was not surprised and that this had been raised by the staff with the owner, who had paid no attention.
