Looking for authentic Mexican food in a warm and cozy environment? ... Yeah no, this is not that. I would describe Chevys, with affection, as "Mexican Applebee's." This is classic Americanized Mexican food; everything is covered in cheese, the chips they bring to your table may be Tostitos, and the margaritas are large, weak, and a bit overly sweet. All that being said, I'm fond of Chevys. It's never too busy, there are a few TVs and some good patio seating, and the food, for what it is, is actually pretty great. This time, I had the salmon tacos and a margarita, both from the all day Sunday happy hour menu. The salmon was surprisingly well cooked and well seasoned, and the grilled (canned) pineapple was a nice touch. I was early for where I needed to go and wasn't looking forward to putzing around in DC before my hotel was ready. I did a quick search and found this place on Yelp and made my way here. I love some good Mexican food. When I showed up here there wasn't hardly anyone in here. It was after the lunch rush and before the dinner rush, and that could be a reason why. When I walked in I was greeted by the host and when I told them it was just me and he asked me if I would just want to sit at the bar. I agreed and was on my way. Sat at the bar and had a menu and drink in front of me as fast as could be. I took a quick look over the menu and placed my order. While I waited I was given complimentary chips and salsa. They were decent and kept me busy until my food arrived. The one gripe I have about this is that they didn't take great care with the salsa. I found multiple stems from peppers in the salsa. Bad thing is if you do not pay attention you could possibly end up with one of them in your mouth. I believe I went with the I went with the pick two combo. I opted for two picadillo ground beef enchiladas. This comes with rice, refried beans and some type of cornbread. I dove right into the enchiladas. They hit the spot. I was not upset in the least that they fell apart. Especially since I could mix everything on the plate together to make a Mexican salad, albeit a messy one. I am not sure what is in that cornbread concoction, but it was damned good. Nice and sweet and a great compliment to the meal. I love to come to this location. They have several seats along the window so you can people watch as you enjoy your meal. They also have seating outside so you can enjoy the weather on a nice day. The serve at this location is always great. They are very customer service oriented and the food is great. Today, I ordered an appetizer (Touchdown Tots) from their seasonal menu. The description is seasoned tater tots topped with shredded cheddar cheese, chile con queso, housemade secret sauce, bacon bits and green onions. I also had a side of their freshly prepared guacamole. I typically get the shrimp and crab enchilada, which consists of shrimp and blue crab sauteed in white wine and garlic with veggies, jack cheese and habanero pesto cream sauce. This was the worst tasting food i've had the displeasure of tasting at an established restaurant in my extensive experience. The workers obviously were trying their best but there was nothing they could do to make up for the food. I will not be returning. If you have a large party of people and want to get food I urge you to find another establishment. We ate here with a very large group of 8th graders and had a wonderful experience. They can handle huge groups with proper notice. The food was buffet style and they offered a wide range of taco ingredients like chicken, steak and beef. They do have gluten free and nut free options as well. All of the food was excellent. My recent trip to Chevys was quite disappointing. Something appeared to be wrong with the ticketing system and it caused quite the commotion between the bartender and waiters. I only asked for no cheese and avocado on my salmon tacos, but that also caused me not to get the peaches (which are my favorite part). Once again, the ladies room was not up to par. This has got to be the worst restaurant I have ever been to. I went there for a school trip with my class, and as soon as we got there, we noticed the obviously unwashed dishes. There was dirt on the plates, particles in the water, and unhealthy bacteria in our food. Just hours after visiting the restaurant, I got food poisoning in the middle of the night. I will spare you the details, but it was very painful and uncomfortable. In my opinion, the food didn't even taste good and the queso tasted like plastic, but of course that is subjective. At the beginning of the visit, students and chaperones were separated into two tables and they started to serve us. The customer service was frankly rude, especially to us students, probably under the guise that we wouldn't know any better. The chaperones, on the other hand, were treated nicely, and we realized this after complaining to them, and they said that the service seemed normal. Of course, it is probably safe to assume they couldn't care less about fifty teenagers in one room. However, it is important to maintain a professional and patient attitude, even when it feels like you shouldn't. All in all, this was a terrible experience; the only consolation being having the ability to tell my loved ones the story about the worst restaurant I have ever been to. It might be a better experience individually or with a family instead of a class, but still, I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy read more
