Order a Penicillin, Cayenne Negroni, Pomme Collins, or a custom classic of your choice if you feel line something stronger. Today, a Nordic shrimp roll was calling me but will reserve that when I return with friends over a glass of white vino... for now, I opted for the menu du jour grilled cheese, and their signature latte with steeped rose petals and pink peppercorns - a brighter, fruitier, milder in spiciness than the black peppercorn. Opened in February 2021, headed by Pénéloppe Tancrède (Brasserie Harricana) and Gabriel Lavallé (Café Paquebot), is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. You walk in and there's a clothing store on one side and black curtains straight ahead. I just stood there confused for a second until someone suddenly appeared and escorted me through the curtains, down a long dark hallway, and into this intimate, dimly lit bar. Turns out, I had accidentally stumbled into a speakeasy. The space is tiny--maybe 6-8 seats at the bar and a long banquet along the wall for 10-12 more people. No menus either. They ask what you like and don't like, then craft a cocktail specifically for you. The pours are generous and the bar is stocked with top-shelf liquor. About a drink and a half in, I realized I needed actual food immediately and had to leave. The staff was friendly, personable, and chatty, and because the space is so intimate, you naturally end up talking with the people around you. Definitely more of a solo or date-night spot than a group hang. Such a cool, unexpected experience.

I'm a fan of cocktail bars, and after reading up on this spot I made it my intention to check it out. It just so happened that it was a short walk from my hotel, so we decided to check it out one night before heading to dinner. The Cloakroom is a speakeasy, nestled behind a hidden door in a men's clothing shop. In the line of being a speakeasy, the space is small - there are only 24 seats but since we got there right at opening we were seated right away. The space is dark and intimate, with the bottles of liquor lit up behind the bar providing an attractive focal point. One of the more unique features of the bar is that there's no menu; we told our server the types of liquors we wanted along with the flavor notes and they crafted a cocktail based on our tastes. We ultimately had two rounds; my first drink was vodka-based and fruity, while I went with something gin-based and dryer. Both were very good - there's little fanfare with presentation; the bartenders let the drinks speak for themselves. Service was great; due to the setup, each patron is given extra attention which really highlighted the experience. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at The Cloakroom Bar. This was definitely a unique experience with excellent curated drinks. I would definitely return the next time I'm in Montreal.

Our nightlife is what makes our city and I really hope the provincial and federal government get together behind some actual coordinated support for these crucial local businesses. I used to live near Hemisphere gauche and have walked by all kinds of different crowds gathered outside, it's so awesome to see how different kinds of communities can feel welcomed in live music venues and bars and I love walking by and feeling, not just unthreatened, but somehow welcomed in their midst. I've sat on the window ledge here and enjoyed a cheep beer and the people watching, and I've rolled in here with a crew of badass lady friends after another bar closed and the staff let us take over their karaoke set up and drink whiskey and sing all our frustrations out till closing time, no fuss.

It's a little on the edge of fancy for my taste, but with a nice selection of cocktails around the $10 range I am not mad at them. The Mojito and Ceasar were classic and strong, and the $22 charcuterie sharing plate was actually big and hearty and plenty for two people, with neat tastes like the pickled egg and vegetables, and the beet mustard. The big backlit lettered sign with drink specials looks great and helps prevent the feeling of squinting at a chalkboard in a dim bar so popular around town. There's a sizeable booth in the back nearby windows into the kitchen, but the prime seat for me is right in the front in the setting sun, I'll be back earlier next time to try and slip into it. Being the Montreal Gran Prix weekend, the city exploded with crowds making it difficult to find a place with a patio and seating outside. Determined to succeed we found this place with the last table for two on the patio available. We were thrilled, as this place not only delivered in that department it was highly rated on Yelp. The place was bustling with patrons inside and out, but the service was outstanding with quick delivery of much needed beer with our food shortly there after. Bar Dominion is not just a bar with a long list of cocktails and a few beers, they have a nice selection of seafood and small plates. The menu here is not your typical "bar" food selection, but a selection one would find on a bistro menu. I ordered the Petite Bourgogne beer, which is a local red beer that was crisp and fresh. The Lobster Roll was the item that stood out for me and I'm glad I ordered it as it was super fresh and delicious. The buttery roll was perfect with the well seasoned lobster garnished with chives. The portions are also just right. The inside atmosphere was off the rails with an upscale atmosphere and the patio was quite different with atmosphere more suitable for conversation with ease. I really enjoyed this place and glad we accidentally discovered it. The only thing I regret is not trying one of their cocktails, as I learned after that the cocktails were created by a renowned mixologist, Andrew Whibely from Cloakroom Bar fame. This explains the very short offerings of beers.
