This is an amazing restaurant. The food is delicious. The fresh spring rolls were so fresh. And the sauce on the fried calamari was nothing like I had ever tasted; not to mention the meat was very tender and not at all rubbery. Hands down, my favourite restaurant in Oxford, if not everywhere! I've been many times and never had even the slightest problem - as close to perfection as you can get. The food is sensational - all very authentic and every dish prepared very carefully and absolutely delicious. My personal favourites are the pork dumplings and chicken spinach parcels to start, both delicious and great for sharing. I love the sizzling dishes and my favourite dish is the beef in oyster sauce, so subtle and still packed full of favour. Also a fantastic wine list, many lovely bottles and a foolproof menu that gives very accurate descriptions under each wine so you know exactly what you're getting - obviously very carefully chosen by someone who cares about it very much. I've got to mention the ice-cream - to die for! Very rich and creamy, perfect after a spicy meal - the best ice cream in Oxford. Chocolate lovers have to try their bitter chocolate, delicious! The service is spot on - very polite, extremely efficient and happy to help. The manager does a fantastic job of keeping everything running smoothly. The best thing about non-chain restaurants is how much the staff care about making it a success, which filters down to the service. You'll have to book a table, as it's very popular indeed. Brilliant for a romantic date, a meal out with good friends, taking your family out for a treat - anything. I recommend going for dinner rather than lunch so that you can eat plenty, as it's well worth ordering a lot! The best way to eat here is to order a lot of dishes to share, and taste a little bit of everything. None of it will disappoint! read more

As a student at Oxford, I did think Chiang Mai was overpriced. Now that I'm a grown-up(!) I can see that really, they're catering to an elegant, tasteful crowd. I was lucky enough to be dining here with a particularly special person and we had an amazing meal. Our waitress was cute and giggly: it may well have been her first day, but we forgave her mistakes while ordering as she was so dang sweet about it. My flat noodles were amazing, seasoned perfectly and portioned just right, and the accompanying salads were freshly, beautifully prepared. Yelp-love has it so right for this spot :) read more

Great flavors and food. One of the best places I've been to since arriving in England. Compared to the states, CA in particular, it meets the standard and is par to what I get in LA and OC. I studied abroad at Queens College back in the summer of 2007, and this was by far the favorite restaurant for all of the students in the program. For Thai in Oxford, Chiang Mai is as good as you will find. I always leave satisfied and impressed. Authentic tasting and perfectly balanced dishes (chili heat, sweet, salty and sour). Excellent Thai food, but a little pricey.

My absolute favourite restaurant in Oxford. The food is absolutely delicious, and the service is always great. I recommend the Kung Chup (battered king prawns) for starters, and the Gaeng Penang chicken for the main course, all washed down with a king sized Singa beer. The only problem is the size of the place. It's quite tiny, and we always seem to be left waiting on the stairs for ages before being seated. Oh yeah, for some reason every time I've been there with my Dad, the food has been a bit crap. So just don't go there with your Dad. read more

Delicious thai food. I had the curry with lychee nuts and I was extremely impressed with the flavor. The pad Thai was of high quality and the red curry was good too. Only slightly disappointed with the quality of the wait staff. They could have been more polite and accommodating. The prices are also a bit high and then portions are on the smaller side. I've been to Oxford twice now and have had good time to sample all the food, and I must say this is probably my favorite restaurant. IT has a quiet, comfortable atmosphere, and the decor makes you feel as though you are actually in Thailand. The service is excellent. The food is delicious and the portions are great. The reviews give the impression that this place is truly exceptional. It seems instead like a good Thai restaurant. So, four stars by the standards of mid-budget Thai resteraunts. Started with the See Krong Moo, which were cooked just right but heavy enough that they should be split by at least two people. Had the Kang Lueng Kai for a main course, which tasted very fresh, if a little sugary. Might have done better to ask for recommendations. Service during the lunch rush is very much all business. The orders take a bit to come out, but that's actually not such a bad thing. Based on the dishes I had it seems to be the case that they are making the orders after they get them, as opposed to having premade food ready to serve. read more

We used to be regulars of Chiang Mai Kitchen and although the dishes are pricey the service and quality of the food would make up for it. Tonight we experienced the most unfriendly service ever by the Asian women serving us. No welcome, no smile, not helpful when asking questions and her attitude proposed that SHE is doing US a favour by us eating there. I ordered a tom ka gai soup with noodles and three spoons later I found a hair on the noodles!!!!! The male waiter who seemed new in his role took the dish away and asked if I'd like another one. I had lost my appetite and declined. The senior grumpy female waiter brought our bill and had the nerv to tell me that she had removed 'part' of the dish from the bill. The noodles in the soup were removed but not the soup! After explaining to her that I didn't eat the dish due to the hair, she removed it from the bill and said this has happened twice since the last week!! She didn't even apologise, didn't offer any compensation and was still extremely unfriendly and unpleasant. We will unfortunately not return and tell our friends and family not too either. I have worked within the hospitality sector for over 20 years and know that if incidents like that happen you can turn the negative experience around by various gestures and a pleasant attitude. But not here! Such a shame as it used to be a nice place to visit. read more
