Worth every penny! I had a headache all day and night. I took 3 ibuprofen in the morning and 3 in the afternoon just to make it somewhat manageable. He had me get a xray done before he saw me. When he finally did see me he knew what was wrong before he worked on me. I've gone a handful of times so far and my headaches have improved tremendously. I don't take pain pills every day like I used to. I can't wait until my body stays the way he adjusts it and stays that way. He is very good at explaining what he's doing and what the problem is. My experience was beyond frustrating. Yes the staff is great but I 100% feel conned out of a lot of money, a lot of my time, work time off and I'm in more pain than when I began. You are told when you sign up to do the DRX 9000 treatments once they are used there is no refund. They don't work on everyone but the doctor believed I would be a great candidate. We discussed my severe degenerative disc at L5-S1 along with the Scoliosis in my spine. You are informed you can cancel at anytime if you feel they aren't for you or aren't working. But if you complete the entire 25 sessions then you get 50% off all future sessions. But the reality was this: I tried to cancel at about 4 weeks and was convinced by the doctor to keep going. I wanted this to work so bad I gave in. I asked for X-rays because I didn't believe it was working correctly as by this time I wasn't supposed to be expirencing any of the pain I had been before I started. I was in more pain and even pain to the touch at the site which I had NEVER expirenced before. I was told no need to do additional X-rays as we will just treat the symptoms. But when I informed him I felt my pain was because my pelvis felt twisted I was told (very nicely) that I was wrong. I felt ignored when I repeatedly informed him it was so painful when touch now. So how can you treat symptoms when your symptoms are ignored? The weight of the pull was increased which caused more pain for a few weeks. I asked to decrease it and was told no. At this time I began taking additional pain meds, on my own, giving me relief. He says this is proof the treatments were working NO this was pain meds working. Long story short, I completed all 25 sessions much against my own better judgment. Shame on me! I got X-rays redone..... the DRX had worked at disc spacing... however, since Dr McCowan thinks all bodies are made the same, he didn't calibrate my spinal curves into my treatment and he pulled on the wrong disc. I now have HUGE spacing at L4 with no difference to L5-S1 which is what was supposed to be being treated. When I consulted with him to see what do to next I was informed we would need TO START OVER! Only this time he will adjust my body to "hopefully" pull on the correct disc. He stated this may take a few sessions of trial and error to find the correct line up. So why did we not do this in the beginning? Am I not trusting him to be the professional that knows the human body and factors in my differences as we are not all made the same along with how his machine works to give me the best possible experience with the best possible outcome? I mean he knew about my curve from the initial X-Rays we clearly discussed this. This is HIS JOB! This is what we are paying for. Or at least I sure thought so. Shame on me again. So ready for the best part...... when I asked about cost of starting all over because HE didn't calibrate the machine correctly to match my body.... he offered me a 30% discount to start over. I just wanted to cry. Not only can I not continue to gamble with thousands of dollars, I also cannot take all this time off work again for another 2+ months of treatments, I also could become even more worse off again. I don't know what I expected but I guess at minimum the 50% discount I paid for would have been a good start, but I still don't have the time from work and I have a huge fear of more pain more disability. So I'm out a lot of money, my time, my work time and in more pain than when I began. I'm at a complete loss of feeling conned and scammed. He didn't do his job right and I'm paying for it. Big disappointment....... 1st time paitent I came in with high hopes for some help and left with an empty wallet. They don't have same day help, you have to go to an outpatient center for X-ray. When my 15min back crack was over I was corralled to the front desk were I was then billed 70$. When I offered my insurance card (blue cross) she said "we don't take insurance cards" even tho blue cross covers me. Chiropractic and therapy treatment from Dr. Matt McCowan for my back problems has given me back my life. I recommend him to anyone I know looking for a talented, caring, professional chiropractor. I am writing a bit about my story for anyone else who might suffer from similar issues and hope it will help you make a decision. I suffer from two back area problems and am in my thirties. One area was in my lower back where I had bulged disks and a lot of sciatica and low back pain from an old injury. I used to dread getting out of bed in the morning. I would have to pull my knees to my chest, roll out of bed and hope that I could stand up. This was particularly concerning, because I stand for as many as eight hours a day to do my job and I was at the point where it was difficult to remain upright for more than 45 minutes. The second area is in my upper back, which has been chronic since an injury from my high school years. This problem would cause pinching of nerves that would lead to muscle tension, sinus pressure, teeth grinding, vision problems, and severe migraines every week. I was extremely nervous about finding a chiropractor that would meet my standards in Chico, but on the recommendation from a colleague, I decided to visit Dr. McCowan to see if he could help me. I was immediately impressed by his professionalism and the amazing staff working in the office. He did not want to adjust any area of my back without seeing first the results of an MRI, which I found to be incredibly responsible, even if I was impatient for immediate treatment. After a very thorough review and consultation, Matt determined that I was a good candidate for the DRX treatment, which was expensive, but priceless in how it improved my life for the better. I can now get out of bed like normal and my sleep and quality of life has drastically improved. As a caveat, this treatment isn't for everyone and you should be prepared that your consultation and treatment may take time (but I find this to be very responsible and professional). I knew better than to expect results overnight and also knew it would take dedication on my part to follow through with home care that was prescribed. Staying the course paid off, but it did take several months. Matt also has given me incredible relief with my upper back problem as well. He uses a very special and lesser known technique, that he learned while studying in SoCal. This technique adjusts everything in my upper back with the least impact and jarring of my body. I've had experience with numerous other chiropractors and none could ever fully rectify the misalignment without a lot of awkward maneuvering or jarring of my upper back. Matt's delivery of the technique is nothing short of masterful and I'm thrilled to have far fewer migraines. Dr. McCowan strives for excellence in what he does and it certainly shows. He hires talented staff and has modern equipment. As part of his treatment, he uses stimulation therapy, heat, ice, and herbal remedies to compliment and maintain the adjustments. In addition, Dr. McCowan's staff are wonderful and I feel like a member of the family when I'm there. I'm always greeted by name and with a smile when I arrive. There are always snacks or coffee available for clients and Matt's wife even makes cookies and muffins for the office waiting area! The sole purpose in writing this review is that I wish I had the facts before taking time out of my day (and my husband's) to attend an initial consult. Let me be clear that I was never a patient here and received no treatment, so my experience is based only on the initial consult. I have suffered back pain for as long as I can remember and was eager to get some help. I don't think I'm alone in asking if a provider takes insurance before making an appointment. We work hard, spend a lot of money on our healthcare and expect to be able to use it. I was told they indeed take insurance and that after my consult they would go over the costs. While it is hard to put a price tag on good medical care, it's important to have a general idea of the cost before you go in. They don't tell you on the phone that it's going to cost thousands because they'd lose 99% of their consults. A provider is always able to give you a benefit estimate before even going in. Prior to being seen, they also require you to have an x-ray or MRI of some sort. While I understand the importance of this, it was extra time and money spent that was not necessary had I known what I was getting myself into. Lastly, they don't let you attend the initial consult without your spouse, family member or friend. They tell you that it's because "the doctor is going to tell you so much information that people find it helpful for another set of ears to hear everything so you can take it all in." It's already hard enough finding time to make my own doctor appointments, let alone dragging my poor husband there with me. Nonetheless, he left work early to attend the appointment and I guess the only good thing about him being there was that we could later corroborate how weird and cult like this place is. Upon arrival, we were put in a room to watch a video. The video was basically an advertisement about the machine they use (DRX 9000). It attempted to sell the machine BEFORE I even saw the chiropractor. We considered leaving at that point but decided to stick it out. After about a 10-15 minute video, the chiropractor comes in. He first gives a spiel about this treatment isn't for everyone and you are made to feel like only an elite group of people are allowed to be his patient. While I appreciate medical professionals ability to differentiate ailments they can and can't treat, this approach felt much more like "only the special" can be a part of this rather than an honest approach to what he treats. He then goes over my xray and tells me everything that's wrong with my back. We listen to his assessment and explanation before he then circles back around to the fact that indeed there is something seriously wrong my back, and surprise, surprise! We CAN help you! Yay! Now I am part of their elitist group that only a few have access to so I better snatch up this opportunity. No sooner does he finish about the effectiveness of his treatment (which is essentially traction in a $100K machine) does he start talking about payment plans. And not just talking about the payment plans - regurgitating information over and over. Eventually my husband cut him off and said, "we don't want to hear about payment plans; we want to hear how you can help her." As I stated above, the cost of medical care is important, however under no circumstance should it be used to lure you in (ie: a "doctor" discussing payment plans with his patients!) Has your primary care doctor ever said, "you need chemo. Now let's talk about opening a line of credit for this." No. You learn what care you need, then you work with your insurance company and the billing staff to figure out if you can and want to afford it. As soon as the payment plan was brought up, my husband and I instantly knew why they require someone to be with you. Because when he drops the ball that this so called treatment costs upwards of $4000-7000 dollars, most people would return home, tell their spouse about this "amazing treatment and oh but it costs $6000 but he told me I am definitely qualified for this so it must be helpful!" He would lose all potential patients at this point. Essentially what they do in this office is tell you everything that's wrong with you, that you qualify for our treatment (yay!), and then drop the bombshell that it's going to drain your bank account. We both have been to enough medical practitioners to know their practice is shady. Perhaps their treatment works, however, their approach to gaining patient trust is highly lacking, and instead feels like a slimy business cashing in on innocent people who simply want to feel better. Honestly, we have no problem paying $7000 or $70,000 for something that will work. What we have a problem with is their poor approach to gaining patient trust and their slimy maneuvers to lure people in. read more

I wanted to keep my identity private because I'm a current patient here, but I have to say that I'm pretty grossed out/turned off by what I've been observing while coming here. I wasn't going to say anything but recently I had an appointment on a holiday, I was shocked they were open. It turns out the doctor and the secretary took thw day off but the other girl still had to work. She wasn't complaining this is purely my observation. come to find out none of the employees get sick days, benefits, or vacation hours. They get $15 an hour which is how much you make to work at McDonald's. And we are supposed to trust these people with our spines?! Get real. This must be illegal right? Employees must get a certain amount of sick time. She says as long as someone can cover her shift it's no problem. Kind of hard with only 2 employees though... that's on the business owner. Yet I've seen the secretary do her job plus the other jobs when someone was sick and no one could cover the others girls shift. One time I came In and the front desk girl was sick and I asked why she's there and she said she's never missed a day of work whwm she's sick because she's the only one who does her position there. Employees shouldn't have to come to work SICK. Ok as if that's not enough.. the owner Dr matt charges almost $300 PER APPOINTMENT. But there's no hot water in the bathroom, the Machines are both almost broken the remotes only work half the time. $300 an appointment you'd think it would at least work right. I see right through this. I was told to do 20 treatments. It was $6,000. When I completed 20 I wasn't better so he told Me 10 more. Then 10 more. Then 10 MORE. hes only works 15 hours a week, so he's just rolling in money while he drains us people who are In pain. Insurance doesn't cover this! But he will tell you it might. It won't. Matt may be good for someone in a tremendous amount of pain. But for the average person he is just far tooo expensive. My mom is 82 and took a fall that caused some neck pain. She went to him because of the commercials she saw on tv. The treatments he wanted her to do went for over a year and came with a very large price tag. I am writing this review because I just don't want what happen to my mom to happen to someone else. The treatment went on a credit card with a very high interest rate to boot. Just be aware of these things before making any contract agreements that you haven't totally thought through. read more
