SERVICE!!! I made reservations for 2 on a Friday night at 8pm. Got there about 8:05, parking is terrible around there! We walk up, no hostess in eye sight, a few minutes later she comes out. Checks us in and ask us to wait because our table is not ready. Meanwhile we peeked inside and there's ready tables, but we said ok and just sat down on a bench behind her. Another couple was behind us and she checked them in or I believe they didn't have reservations and took menus and took them to their table. While she was taking them, she asked if we wanted to get a drink at the bar and we said no thank you! Then we're still waiting and it's chilly. So I asked if they had reservations and she said no and they wanted to sit outside. And she asked if we want inside we have to wait, and it's like 8:15 now. I think by seeing there's tables inside and her just being rude, we decided to leave and go to Pasadena to a place where we knew food was good! It's a joke that they have a Michelin star! Went with a group of four and we tried a variety of dishes: cucumber salad, Dan Dan noodles, veggie dumplings, roasted chicken, lomo saltado, and okra. Everything was good but nothing stood out as exceptional. The protein dishes were priced a bit too high for only coming with fries, but again, they were tasty. Service was friendly but a bit slow. It's a large outdoor space (with some indoor seating too) and they didn't have enough staff to accommodate. I've been meaning try out Chifa for quite a while. I finally set aside the time and made a reservation. Having looked at photos of the restaurant, I was pleased to see that they have a parking lot, only to find out that it is being used for outdoor seating. A trip around the block and I found street parking. Upon entering, I was awestruck by the decor! Lots of bright colors and unique chairs with a nice vibe. We were warmly greeted and shown to our table. Our server was great at guiding us through the menu and helping us decide our order. We went for the Causa, Mala Har Gow, Dan Dan Mian, Spiced Okra and their Brûlée Char Siu, along with a couple of cocktails. The cocktails took a while to arrive, but they were delicious. We had the Drunken Yuzu and the Gimme Gimme Gimme. The Drunken Yuzu was made with gin and yuzu giving boozy, tart martini vibes. The Gimme Gimme Gimme was made with Strawberry Tarragon infused gin with a touch of rhubarb and lime. It's hard to describe it but it was our favorite by far! While waiting for the drinks, our Causa arrived. It was beautifully plated and consisted of layers of seasoned mashed potatoes, avocado and bluefin tuna with some aji oil and egg. It was quite tasty. A short while later, the remaining items were served. First was the Dan Dan noodles. Our server claimed this is their most popular dish and it did not disappoint, though the thin noodles were difficult to eat because the peanut sauce thickened as it cooled. I've had these noodles at other places, and while they were good, they were not outstanding. I think I prefer the Dan Dan from Joy....at least they are easier to eat. Next up was the Har Gow, which surprised me when I saw the black wrapper on the dumplings. That's a first. The filling was delicious though the dumpling wrapper was rather bland. I probably wouldn't have noticed except the wrapper would pull itself away from the the filling, forcing you to eat it by itself. Last up was the Char Siu and the Spiced Okra. I was excited about the Char Siu as it is one of my favorite things to eat. And to have it brûléed on top was the icing on the cake. The meat itself was very tender but was lacking that Char Siu taste of 5 spice. The brûlée on top added a nice sweetness but it still didn't quite measure up to my standards, with Chin Chin being my favorite place to order it. But that okra!!!! It was THE BOMB!!! We are both okra fans, especially me having grown up in the south where fried okra is a staple. Their version was sliced and wok fried with a delicious seasoning that included Szechuan pepper as well as pieces of red onion. For those that don't like slimy okra, you needn't worry. The wok frying eliminated that and resulted in these nice, slightly chewy pieces of okra that I am still thinking about today. I could eat an entire order of that by myself. Overall, the meal was pretty good but not the flavor explosion I was expecting. I had the chili noodles being sold by the entrance of the patio side of the event. They were super spicy and that was it. Their only flavor profile was spicy/spicy. The brûlée char siu was tasty, but did not come out warm, so it was a little bit weird to have this really rich candied pork belly at room temperature. The noodles were really just alright, I prefer the ones at Joy in Highland Park. Really, the vibe here is the intangible that makes it cool. Even then, the chairs are really uncomfortable to sit in for more than half an hour. I get the need to turn tables, but it's not great when the price point is more in line with a real sit down restaurant. We had an event here recently and it was absolutely perfect. The owners could not be more delightful, and they've created this really lovely and gracious space. Although I'm not a huge fan of outdoor dining most of the time, the beautiful outdoor space here is so peaceful with so much greenery and pretty tables, I would happily dine al fresco. As this was a private party, we had small passed plates - a fantastic dim sum combo plate and calamari among others. The dim sum combo was wonderful. Lately, I'm on a real dim sum kick and I was thrilled to see this on the menu. They also really excel at cocktails. They made several specialty drinks for our event and they were all gorgeous and delicious. Parking is a little tough so plan ahead for that. This is an exceptional example of a locally owned family restaurant. Put this on your list for any occasion - date night, special celebration, large party, casual weeknight dinner with friends... Chifa is one of my favorite cuisines, so I've been itching to try... Chifa for a long time. The vibe, decor, presentation, and atmosphere were exceptional. They had everything down to the detail. I wanted to start here because I think it's really easy to be lazy with this or even shallow, but Chifa avoids both approaches. Parking was street only. I went on a Friday at 5:30 PM, so I can imagine that parking can be difficult at busier times, but there were a few spots on Lincoln, the side street. The food was great. I grew up eating the straight Cantonese versions of these dishes, and I love trying different takes on them. I will say that I wanted to try everything on the menu but obviously couldn't, so I already knew I wanted to come back before even ordering and my experience did not dissuade me at all. Everything we got was delicious. My wife and I ordered and shared the Dan Dan Mian, Trinity Fried Rice, Black Pepper Prawn, Sweet & Sour Pork, Lomo Saltado, and Lai Cha Float. I'd say the winner was the prawns because they were incredibly flavorful and every bite was substantial. I love it when I can just eat the shells and you can do that with these. The fried rice was good on first bite, a mixture of subtle flavors anchored by garlic, but after that it became quite bland. I treat fried rice as a litmus test for Asian places and it passed, just not with flying colors. Every other dish fell somewhere between the prawn and fried rice scale, sitting closer to the prawns. The Lai Cha float was a fantastic way to close out the dinner. It consisted of pouring tea onto ice cream, which was novel, but I would love an option where you could get an actual float to enjoy with your meal versus having it only as a dessert. Maybe they can do that if you ask, but I did not. The service was also good, but there was just one server and she was working hard. No issues other than she took the order of a couple who arrived and were seated 15 minutes after we were. I don't think it was her fault and I was more annoyed with the couple than with her, of course. At the end of the day, I know it's not a 1:1 or fair comparison to Chinese food that you can get in the San Gabriel Valley, but the price I paid for this felt high for what it was. What I paid here could have paid for a meal for 10 at a Cantonese seafood restaurant, but I understand why the price is what it is. It's not dissimilar to how I felt about Pine & Crane in the 2010s. I just want to call this out to 1) help people avoid surprises and 2) introduce the existence of cheaper options. I'll end with this: none of the food surprised me and that's not an insult. I didn't come in hoping to taste anything unfamiliar and what I got was exactly what I expected: my favorite food done incredibly well. I could tell everything I had was prepared with care. None of it felt like it was thrown into a wok, coated with oil, and dumped on a plate. I think Chifa fills a need where this type of food can be served stylishly and be a complete pleasure to eat. Chinese and Chinese-adjacent food does not need to always be cheap and utilitarian. This food can be enjoyed the same way as a nice Italian or sushi dinner and I'm glad to have experienced it. read more

Really solid spot in Highland Park, with a few things to know before you go. Parking is street parking only, and since it's on a busy intersection, you'll likely need to park behind the restaurant on a more residential/industrial street. The restaurant is so cute, dim lighting, thoughtfully curated decor, and an overall cozy atmosphere that makes it a great date-night spot. My favorite dishes were the causa, the wok hay veggies, and the fried rice. The dishes deliver what they promise-- lots of flavor, wok energy, and the kind of care and attention to detail that makes upscale restaurants memorable. I really enjoyed the crispy shrimp and individual grains of rice in the Trinity fried rice in particular. The color of the rice is pale so I thought it'd lack flavor, but it was just the opposite! The vegan zongzi was kind of a letdown. While aromatic, it was not adequately salted and the included sugar was kind of strange with the mushrooms. I like sweet rice like sekihan, but azuki and chestnuts would have been more harmonious. The har gow was okay, but you can add any random mala oil to normal har gow at home. Other than the color, it felt pretty homestyle but for a premium price. Chifa interests me as a concept, and several dishes were memorable. However, while eating pescatarian I didn't feel like the dinner was very balanced, and that the bill was rather high for how little protein I had. I had driven past it often over the years and loved how it looked on the outside (a small green building with a heart shaped large window). Came for a friend's bday dinner and wasn't disappointed. This place is a fusion spot that mixes Peruvian, Hong Kong, and Taiwanese cuisine. The staff helped us pick a menu that also featured vegan options (like the Dan Dan Noodles, Mapo Togu, and Tangy Cucumber Salad). The Wok Hay Vegetables were good as well, but you have to request it to be vegan since there's oyster sauce. For non vegans, we got the Black Pepper Prawns, which were delicious, and the Lomo Saltado, which wasn't too spicy. We also got basically every drink on the menu... I personally enjoyed the Dragon Toddy, which is there version of a Hot Toddy. Service was good. The manager was helping our group as we had a large party. They were accommodating with helping us with our cake and set up our decorations. Parking can be a struggle if you can't find street parking, as I'm not sure if they have their own lot. I parked by the CVS and walked over and didn't have any trouble. The bathrooms are shared with the outdoor space though, which wasn't the worst, but does mean you may have to wait to go. I'll start off by saying the winner of the food experience was the pollo ala brasa! The brine/dry marinade was so good and made the skin very crispy. A hearty portion with some fries, good for sharing. Must get the chili oil on the side! Their chili oil is so good. Tried the Dan Dan mien, pretty solid but I'd say for me it is on the saltier end. I probably wouldn't get this again but it may be a preference thing. Appetizer wise - The tiradito was good, but this is definitely a higher end appetizer as it's a tiny portion. The sauce was good though. Also tried popos wellness soup and this reminded me of something very homemade in Cantonese household. I've been wanting to try this place because of the cute interior. It is on the higher end of casual dining, good for dates, small group gatherings, girls nights. Pricey ish for sure, you can expect to pay at least $50 per person for a well rounded experience. Definitely not a place I'd come to regularly, but perhaps on slightly special occasions or as a treat. Based on other reviews and thoughts from mutuals, this seems like a hit or miss place depending on the dish you get, you have to know what to order! Overall the food was really good however it's on the pricier end and I recommend sharing. Wok hay vegetables: surprisingly a very delicious vegetable dish. My friend and I aren't the type to be confrontational or leave bad reviews like this, but this one was something else. We got seated, and it took about 10 minutes just for them to get our drink order, which is fine. But after he brought the drinks and took our order, the waiter knocked over my wine glass, also spilling the drink all over my pants. Accidents happen, but the problem was how it was handled. He whispered a barely half hearted "sorry," as if it wasn't his fault, and then proceeded to clean in silence and then walk off. We had to ask to be moved while they mopped around us, and there was still no formal apology or acknowledgement. During the meal, the only attention we got was a single water refill. The other tables were checked on, and they made us feel completely isolated and neglected. We were absolutely shocked by the lack of accountability and hospitality from not just the waiter but also the entire staff. And the food? We were confused by how anyone can mess up cucumber salad. The pork char sui was absolutely drenched in glaze that we took one bite and stopped eating. When your service is this bad, at least the food should be good enough to forgive it but it wasn't. We were walk ins with no reservation, but they were able to seat us in the back patio. It was very pleasant, shaded with planters. The place is family owned, and they said they opened during the pandemic, I assume for take out only, and expanded since then. The food is a bit of a Peruvian-Chinese fusion which melds beautifully together. I particularly loved the seafood on top of spiced noodles, which I believe was a play on the lomo saltado. I cannot recall the exact name on the menu. It was large enough to share. Also the spiced okra with Szechuan spices was wonderful. And the house made black sesame cheesecake tart was well balanced and not too sweet. The perfect bite. The signature cocktails are creative, especially the Lychee Butterfly with gin, pomegranate, lychee. My friend had a cocktail with chicha morada. Very light and refreshing. Beautiful restaurant with green decor, green walls, marbly green tables. Service was great. Attentive and helpful. The server noticed that my son didn't drink his soda and they offered him another drink free of charge. The food was by no means bad, but frankly it wasn't excellent either. Nothing was crazy delicious or memorable. We needed more saltiness and flavor. read more
