Our stop and walkabout…read morewas made specifically to take a peak at the current condition of flooding affecting the Lake, beach, and campground area there. We drove down to the campground area, and were able to park on the road, just to the front of the highway signs, and barriers that had been erected to stop any further passage by vehicles, and warnings to those on foot to be careful. Most of the beach and campground areas were totally under water from the river and lake flooding currently affecting the area. It looked, and felt strange to see roadways, sites, signs, and most everything we know so well at this location, submerged in water!! We talked to a couple of area residents, and were told that this particular area of Kilby floods each year, and although flooding this year was significant, it was not nearly as bad as some previous years, when more of the area homes, cottages, et al, were also more directly affected. They said that conditions had basically stabilized at this time, and retreating of the water should be taking place soon. Hope for all their sakes, retreating of the water has started for them, and this lovely area of Harrison Mills within the Kilby Historic Site, will be back to normal soon.

The Marine Life Center is a fantastic free opportunity to get close and personal with some local…read moremarine wildlife. The Center is run by volunteers who have consistently been upbeat and eager to answer questions while caring for the animals. Touchtanks are currently closed due to a sickness with seastars but there are still several small aquariums to peer into full of local marine life. The Marine Life Center is excellent for children but also a fun experience for adults too!

Exploring science museums is one of my hobbies whenever I travel, and I really enjoyed Science…read moreWorld; the FIFA theme was cool to see. Buying tickets was pretty easy at the counter, and they asked if there was intent on exiting and re-entering - of course not, one go! Compared to other science museums that I've been to, Science World feels smaller, probably because it is mainly one large floor with a ground level. However, it's very spacious and has many interactive and interesting pieces. My favorites were the flipbooks to learn about the human body, the tactile demonstrations of hinges in the body, and the amount of many integrations of physics and music / sound. One critique is that it felt more biology and physics heavy than chemistry, but the variety of stations that they did have were very impressive. Some outstanding ones on the chemistry side include their geology exhibit, including crystal structures. The ecology and earth science stations were also fun to explore. By the window, there's also a nice view of the bay / pier. It looks like there are a few things downstairs, although there aren't too many signs for it. My friend and I actually got lost and had to ask for re-entry - oops! Coming with children? They have some neat children exhibits, too, including a little treehouse!

Pioneer Park is the perfect combination of a beautiful outdoor park plus the chance to take in some…read morelocal history. When you first enter the park you're greeted by a row of hand-built, historical buildings made by Whatcom County's earliest settlers and relocated to (what would eventually become) Pioneer Park. If you go on a day that some of the houses are open, for a small donation you can take a tour hosted by volunteers who know pretty much everything about the history of Ferndale and the county! The tour houses are set up with relics from the past - it's so interesting to see how the early settlers lived. Past the houses are open spaces where concerts are held, and the iconic barn which is the home of weddings, dances, and beer gardens throughout the summer. It's always fun to attend one of Pioneer Park's signature events, the Old Settlers Festival, where you are greeted with a ribbon denoting how long you've lived in these here parts, and then you get to enjoy the various vendors (and of course food!) before embarking to the barn where you will pretty much run into everyone you've ever known! Pioneer Park is also home to the beautiful and amazing Star Park, a children's playground build entirely by community volunteers. So now there are fun things for the little ones to do here, too!

Do not think the Natural History Museum in London or the Met in Manhattan. That would be an - apples & oranges comparison, with the former two leading the way when it comes to museums worldwide. The MOA while not as grandiose as the Met, really stands out on its own showcasing mainly First Nations art along with other various artwork. It is a splendid museum. Budget to easily spend a minimum 3 to 5 hours here but definitely give yourself more time & do not rush. There's a lot to see here. There are guided tours available with your paid entry fee. Check at the front desk for more information. Make a note to also go outside of the museum & check out the Totems. Make sure you have a big brekkie or lunch before coming here. The cafe here sells limited items & you cannot bring drinks or food into the museum. Do check online for opening hours in order to give yourself enough time here. Limited parking is available. I parked at the Student Union building then walked over to the MOA along Main Mall & then through the Rose Garden to get here - approximately a 20 minute walk one way. It wasn't cheap but I was with visitors from out of town, so I didn't mind as I was showing them around UBC at the same time. Honestly, I can't wait to go again.

The docent that greeted us was friendly and informative, telling us that the museum was at one time six separate one-room residences that were dismantled and rebuilt to make this current museum. Full of many early and late century household items, placard's describing the way of life on the island, and has loads of interesting artifacts, photographs, and materials showing Orcas Island early community and civilization.
