Some of the best Chinese I've had in a long while, maybe ever. Although, "Chinese" isn't really the right word, as all the dishes we tried incorporated elements from several different cuisines. Chin Dian is absolutely my favorite Asian restaurant in Minneapolis. That they now offer delivery via Bitesquad proves to be very dangerous. I pretty much want to order it every day, and sometimes I do. Everything I've tried has been good, but my primary addiction is the Tofu Chow Mai Fun. There's another review on the site which describes Chin Dian's Chow Mai Fun as under seasoned. I'm sorry, but that person must have a taste bud issue. It's to die for. I am also very fond of their curry chicken, egg rolls and wontons. These are the menu items which keep me up at night. As an added bonus, though sadly not on the delivery menu, they usually offer some type of delectable baked good. I've had both their Carrot Cake and Bread Pudding. Both were worth the trip alone. They also make and sell a ginger syrup with is fantastic in tea (and I don't even like sweetened tea) or on ice cream or in a vodka martini. Chin Dian is a gem. Great food, great service. The owner is almost always there, they buy local and support local as members of the metroiba. Most food options can be made vegetarian friendly. They even offer take it to go sauce, the owner perfected a great selection of sauce that is sold at Lund's or you can get it there. The egg rolls and won tons are superb. What didn't we eat here. . . .starving when we go there because I made my friend wait while i went to spin . .. got there around 8pm - it was pretty packed - i think quite a few people in the place had the groupon (we did). The spring rolls were good - i wish they were with peanut sauce though . .. We had the samosas - also good - the mint sauce - amazing! I'm just not a huge fan of fried stuff - so while good - not to my taste - my friend was a big fan. I would get the spring rolls again and she would get the samosa again. Apparently the shrimp toast is amazing - need to go back and try that. Next up - green beans - they were HEAVENLY!!! I'm going to be dreaming of those later. . .. I got the Kwe Tieu Goreng - yum-e. That was quite delicious. The other dish that we got was the madras chicken - we didn't actually order it - but it was loud and she must have not heard quite right .. .But man am I glad the mixup happened - it was amazing. The spices in it were perfect - kind of curry-ish, but not quite . .. Wow. We didn't get any rice - didn't need it - but that would have been really good with some rice to sop it all up . .. We got talked into dessert which was a ginger bread pudding and I can't say that I regret it at all. We left very full and very satisfied. I've never had Asian food quite like the dishes I ate at Chin Dian Cafe. This place is off the beaten path on Hennepin Ave but I'm glad I stopped in. The quaint little restaurant is decorated with vibrant colors and has cozy booths along the windows. Since we were the only ones in the restaurant, we had a very relaxing meal and quickly noticed most people order take-out instead of dining in. Either way you'll get great food! I ordered egg rolls, shrimp fried rice, and Madras chicken. The fried rice wasn't the best I've ever had but it wasn't greasy - some Asian restaurants are overloaded! The Madras chicken on the other hand was fantastic - very unique curry flavor - delicious! I will definitely return to Chin Dian soon. read more

Shrimp in the Malaysian noodles and shrimp toast were exceptionally and surprisingly fresh. Hot and sour soup was a tad too salty as you continue to sip it got overwhelming. The interior is very clean, organized, and inviting. I would go back, to try a smoothie and some sassy green beans. Shrimp toast wasn't what I expected, it was battered and fried and with the mayo on it it didn't seem different from the fried cod you would get at a bar. My only experience with this place is take out. I have tried to eat in, but it wasn't open! This place is very tasty with great curry and coconut dishes. Try Chow Mai Fun. However, there have been a couple times where my household has tried to go and it has been closed! Chindian is not open on weekends at all! What? Yeah... seems a little goofy to me. They now serve wine and beer however, so I'm excited to go on a weeknight and enjoy some beer with my Chow Mai Fun. read more

We got take out here a couple of weeks ago...the food was just okay, I think there are better places in the cities for chinese. We ordered cream cheese wontons and one of the orders had been over cooked and the wontons were burned and all the cheese had melted out of them so that was incredibly disappointing. The yellow chicken curry was very good as was the pork lo mein. The rest of the dishes that we ordered were relatively forgettable. My sister loves this place. I don't. There are plenty of great places in the Twin Cities, however, this place does not cut it. After dining here, the immediate thought that came to me, "starter food". Meaning, a decent place for the inexperienced to first strike out into the world of Asian fare. As for those who have more sophisticated taste buds, I'd avoid this place completely. Service here is not great. The waiter who greeted me was terse, yet, greets the "regulars" by name and enthusiastically. Whether I'm a regular or not, I would have loved a warmer reception. I ordered Vegetable Samosas and Vegetable Chow Fun to-go, placing my order online. I was really put off by the attitude of the employee who rang up my order when I picked it up. She was snotty and not at all friendly. The food itself was good. The samosas were really tasty and the mint dipping sauce was refreshing and spicy all at once. While both items tasted good, the price was a bit high for the portion size. The chow fun only had 2 pieces of broccoli, a couple slivers of carrot and a few pea pods - very disappointing for a $12 entree. You can get a lot more for a lesser price at The Lotus - and it's just as tasty while the staff are super friendly. If you don't mind an inflated bill, it's a tasty place to eat. I have had several things from this place. I typically go during lunch as its close to my job. The decor is nice, clean & the staff are friendly. Ordering online is easy too but you have to pay with a card (no cash) which I didn't initially realize. Now I tend to order in house so I can pay cash. The food has mostly been great! I've tried the veggie samosas several times. They are SOOO yummy & the Mint sauce is AMAZING!!!!! I've also had shrimp in black bean sauce & the veggie egg rolls.... Both DELICIOUS! Their ginger tea is truly the best I have had anywhere ever. My coworkers rave about the Vietnamese salad too but I have yet to try it. Last week I was craving so bad & decided to try something different. I ordered the general Tso chicken and was utterly shocked. It was the worst I have ever had anywhere. I was totally caught off guard because everything I've had up to this point has been amazing. The sauce was great, always is. But the chicken was weird. Chewy and fatty, all dark meat with a rib like texture. I kinda wondered if it was poor quality pork?? It definitely was not chicken. Even taco bells chicken would beat this. At first I thought I got a bad piece but then I tried another & another. It was all the same! Needless to say I couldn't eat it and just ate the rice. The most annoying part was that I paid nearly $10 for this disappointing lunch & had no time to take it back or I would have. While the sauce was great I would seriously stay away from this dish and stick to all the others I mentioned above. We ordered online and that process was smooth. Between two of us we got egg rolls, cream cheese wontons, chicken fried rice, and Nasi Lemak. The egg rolls were slightly burnt and the sauce looked like it was supposed to be some sort of Thai sweet/sour sauce. It didn't have a lot of flavor and seemed way too sweet for what they were aiming for. The cream cheese wontons were pretty good, but the sauce was super sweet and oddly thick. My girlfriend got the chicken fried rice which she felt was a decent portion for the money, but got something mushy that she wasn't sure about. I'd give it 3.5* The Nasi Lemak was the most interesting piece we ordered. Overall it was a decent dish, with the chili paste and cucumbers providing contrast to one another, and the rice was cooked well. However...when I order something "hot", I expect it to be spicy. This didn't have much of a kick and would have been a lot better if they had kicked it up a notch. Also, the egg was very overcooked in the dish, so that took away from it. May return if we really want chinese...but nothing special here honestly. read more

The manchurian has absolutely no sauce, its really dry and has a ton of onions.. if you are looking for veggies dont order this. If you want spicy, the rasam is delicious! They have a ginger drink that is really good too. So overall a decent place, a little on the 'hole in the wall' spectrum but very nice people. I've had really ups and downs with Chin Dian. It is a menu that fascinates me and dishes that are hard to find in the Twin Cities, but the experience can be very inconsistent. Recently my partner and I went in and had Nasi Lemak and a bowl of curry noodle soup with beef. The Nasi Lemak is great - and the handmade sambal is the real star of that show. The portions of chicken are rather small, but I'm guessing (hoping?) that this place is probably using high-quality organic meats. The curry soup was a completely different story. It had very little flavor - not even a noticeable seasoning kick from the curry preparation or any noticeable coconut milk notes. Again the amount of meat was minuscule, but I'll chalk that off to the earlier issue. But what was worse was the meat had a chewy texture and lacked any distinguishable flavor - of course it's possible the chicken or pork would have been a better choice, but I don't think I would go back to try it again. Compare with the slightly different, but extremely delicious take on this soup at nearby Camdi. We've had great experiences here in the past, particularly with their creative appetizers and Chinese-style dishes. They add a unique dimension of Malay-inspired seasoning to many of these dishes that really sets them apart from any other Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities. The noodle dishes are usually excellent, as well. Frankly, in terms of Chinese take-out, I will now dial up Chin Dian for take-out before any other Chinese place in the area including Pagoda, Peking Garden or the two or three small HK-style places that have popped up along Washington (MSG and oil is what you get at these little spots, but if that's your thing...). The extra $2-3 dollars for each dish is more than made up for by the high-quality of the ingredients. read more

The vegetarian selection is very good, and the rest of the menu has options for just about everyone else. Terrible service, after being seated waited 35 min before we were greeted from our waitress to get out order taken then additional 40 min to get the food! whole time the workers were blaming on how there were too many groupon customers that made the place busy but the total of 1hr 15 min that I was sitting there before I got my food, I was watching the servers serve and they barely came out of the kitchen to service their customers!! They blame on how busy it was but in reality they didnt bother to give good or decent service because they figure most of the customers there were groupon customers,, The WORST service ever at a eatery in my life and oh believe me cause I used to be a waitress so that excuse of "oh too busy" are just an excuse... btw the food were not the great as some reviewer have said it was average or below,, our food was luke warm/cold when we got it...the seasoning and the style of cooking were not anything special at all.. :sigh: I will never be coming back there again for sure! read more

For so long, my boyfriend and I have been searching for a quality, affordable and tasty place to eat gluten free Chinese food. We found it at ChinDian! We ordered the fried calamari (yes, it was fried AND gluten free)... so delicious with 5 spice seasonings. For dinner, we ordered the mai fun noodles as well as sweet and sour chicken... both very fresh and flavorful! It's also cool that they serve beer/wine here too (burning brothers gf beer). I got the Nasi Lemak which I found pretty bland aside from the sauce, which was served on the side and pretty good. Unfortunately it also came with packets of cheap, imitation soy sauce (ingredients: water, salt, MSG, caramel coloring). I would have tried some of their other dishes before dismissing Chin Dian, but you have to have some deep level of contempt for your customers to try to give someone colored salt water as soy sauce. That tells you all you need to know about what they consider an acceptable level of quality. EDIT: reducing my rating from two stars to one because of the owner's unprofessional attitude. read more

A couple of problems with this place: 1. Overpriced $12 for an entree for this little cafe? Double price for fried rice that you can get at any chinese fast food place for $5. 2. No vegetarian options There are only 2 dishes on the entire menu suitable for vegetarians- and neither of them are any good. Don't be misled by their paneer, tofu and other seemingly vegetarian options- you can't eat any of it. 3. Indian or Chinese? I have had great Indo-Chinese food but this place has two separate menus- a Chinese menu and an Indian menu. No real fusion, except for the name. 4. Inconsistency First time I had the ginger tea, it was great. The second time was COLD and gross. And I felt cheated because I can get a nice Chai Latte or something legit for the same price. 5. Rude staff When you enter, a bunch of Indian guys who work there will stare at you. Like state for a few minutes straight without blinking. Also, it depends on who you get but one of the East Asian ladies was very rude. Maybe if your food was good you could get away with being a jerk to your customers. But your food sucks and no one wants to deal with your horrible attitude. read more

It's peculiar, since Nina's family's restaurant, "Rainbow Chinese" on South Nicollet Avenue has been so consistently good over the years. Additionally, they are NEVER open when I would like to give them my business. Their hours are 11:00-2:00, Monday through Friday. How can you run a restaurant that is only open 15 hours per week?! Unless they have transitioned into doing mostly big catering gigs, I won't be surprised when this restaurant fails. I just finished eating leftovers my brother didn't finish from us visiting this restaurant yesterday. I was standing in my kitchen eating at the counter and said, "Holy crap, this is good," to my cat. That's something. I ordered the chicken Chow Mai Fun and asked for it hot. It was actually spicy, not Minnesota spicy which I really liked. I couldn't eat it fast enough because it was so good. I'm not actually sure what my brother's dish was that I finished today, but it was wheat noodles with chicken and tofu and DELICIOUS. We had the chicken wings and cheese wontons for starters and both were excellent. I'd give this place a 5 if they gave free soda refills instead of just a single can. The owners (one of whom was our server) stopped by numerous times to see how we were doing and were very pleasantly attentive without being at all annoying. I really am trying to think of excuses to go back now so I'd recommend trying it. The decor isn't amazing but it's hard to care about that at all when you're eating super tasty food. read more

This place is amazing!!! I should preface with I live a block away and it has taken me over a year to try this place. I'm so glad I finally did. It is a Chinese Indian fusion menu. My boyfriend and I walked down when it was 1 degree outside and it was totally worth it. We started with the chicken dumplings. They were absolutely fantastic, nice and chewy with a sauce that knocked my socks off! We also had the chin dian fried rice and the chow mai fun. Both dishes definitely had an Indian twist to them and a nice heat that paired well with the sparkling sake. The owner was so nice and chatted with us and even brought us a complimentary order of spicy garlic green beans! The service was outstanding and the food was the best of both Chinese and Indian! Unfortunately, we were invited here for a dinner party. It was greatly overpriced and not very good. Two simple entrees and a beer became $50. The sauces were very sweet. I went to Chindian Cafe for lunch after reading all the good reviews posted on Yelp. But I have to say I was a little disappointed at the food. This is a small establishment on E Hennepin Ave, right off hwy 35W. The dumpling in the appetizer menu is not what you expect from other Chinese restaurant. It was very small and over fried (maybe that's their style). The Chow Mai Fun I had was dry and spicy. I recommend most people should get "mild" instead of medium like I did. The Indian spice pretty much masked all the taste of the dish. For lunch, expect to spend average $13/person. I will give this place another try next month and see if other dishes are better than the ones I had today. read more

Located not in a business district but a neighborhood, this restaurant is too spendy for what they can offer. The "Malaysian" food served is not even authentic. I think I don't have a picky taste bud and I still think it doesn't taste as good as other restaurant that serves a Malaysian menu.
