We've tried Chinese food all around Rochester Hills, Shelby Township, and Troy, and this is hands down the best spot. It's carry-out only, but the food is always fresh and hot. We regularly drive 20-25 minutes past other restaurants just to come here. Our go-to dishes are the fried fish tofu casserole and the sweet & sour chicken (definitely get the sauce on the side). Everything we've tried has been delicious -- we honestly haven't had a bad dish yet. Very good takeout here that lasts multiple days if you aren't super hungry and don't finish it all. They have many different options to choose from here and also offer a small dine-in area. We typically get it to go and enjoy at home. The takeout containers are jam packed with food and are very hot still by the time we get them home. The plastic containers really help with that! Small authentic Chinese restaurant located across street from royal palace, another authentic Chinese restaurant. This is takeout only. We ordered the pork belly, shrimp and egg, and beef chow fen. All three dishes were on point with no major problems. Beef was nice and tender, large pieces. Good portion. Egg and shrimp was also cooked well with nice texture. Pork belly melted in mouth, like it's supposed to. Sauce was sweet salty and umami and pairs well with rice. It's hard to find a Chinese restaurant that's open on Mondays. I did a bit of searching, and found this one. I ordered takeout chicken lo mein. I tried to get an eggroll, but all they had were spring rolls. So I passed on that. The chicken lo mein was good. I guess I was expecting a "typical" lo mein, but this one had huge thick short noodles. I think I was disappointed with it at first, but after trying it, it was really good. Based on two visits, one recently and one several years ago, I'm giving them a 4. I've been unable to nail the perfect dish here for me yet, but again I've only been here twice. They offer a large menu so there are many dishes I'd still like to try! Tonight I had their pan fried dumplings and they were very tasty but I wasn't a fan of the sauce that they came with. I also had their pan fried chicken with a lot of veggies, and it was ok. The sauce was blah, at least for me. I had to add a lot of chili oil to give it some flavor. Others may love it as it is, but I wasn't a huge fan. It might be because I ordered more of a Cantonese entree and I'm more of a Szechuan fan... The lady behind the counter was very nice and the place was clean. My food came out fairly quick as well and there's enough of the pan fried noodles for at least two meals. This place may not look like much and is the last thing from fancy, but don't sleep on it. It's probably one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in the area. Their menu is a mix of classic American Chinese, Cantonese, and Sichuan flavors. They have a seating area, but takeout is preferred as they don't have staff to wait on tables. They can get pretty busy over the weekend as I see people walk out with huge trays of food for takeout so call ahead if you don't want to wait. The wait time for your orders may be 35-40 minutes long as they're that short-staffed and it's pretty busy. The lady assists the cook, takes care of the cashier, answers the phone, and even cleans the table if someone prefers to sit. But your patience will be rewarded with good food. I like the sweet and sour pork chop and the shrimp in a sweet cream sauce (I usually call it Asian shrimp mayo). The mapo tofu is also good. Upon entering there was a line at the counter to order. There were only a handful of tables and two or three people probably running the restaurant. We wanted to sit in and eat so we needed to order the food at the counter first. The menu has a lot of dishes options. My husband ordered for us since he has a better understanding of Chinese food. We sat down as the cashier said she was going to bring us the food at the table. Inside is nice and clean, not as nice as other restaurants but there were a lot of people picking up food and waiting in line to order. It smelled so good inside we couldn't wait to start eating. Our order probably took about 20 minutes to get to us. One thing to know if you decide to dine in, they only give you disposable utensils and plates. Our food arrived as if we were picking it which was stacked in food containers inside a plastic bag. We didn't care, we were mostly interested in how the food tasted. We ordered deep-fried calamari, Pan fried noodles with beef and spicy beef with bamboo. The portions did not disappoint when we started to open the containers full of food. Everything was pretty good and tasty. We did order "Asian" spicy for the beef and it did not disappoint, I think that the dish could have been spicier for next time. The calamari were cooked right and had the right flavor. The pan-fried noodles were so good, the beef was tender with thick pieces. We had a lot of leftovers for another meal afterwards. My sister and mom and I stopped here on Thanksgiving Day since not many places were open. The space is small! Only a few tables. We ordered green beans, Szechuan chicken, chicken fried rice, and crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon was chunky on the inside but pretty good. Wow, China Chef is a gem! I was craving Cantonese food and a lot of Chinese food in the midwest leans Szechuan. While China Chef has ALL the options Szechuan and Americanized offers, their Cantonese food is stand out & reminds me of the cantonese cafes in California and food I've had in Hong Kong. We ordered: *Deep fried pork chop with salt and pepper (椒鹽肉排) - I don't usually order this but wanted to because it seemed like a Yelp favorite! It was nicely fried BUT I thought it lacked a bit of flavor. I wanted more salt & pepper flavor! *Beef Brisket Hot Pot (蘿蔔牛腩): Wow, super flavorful & the brisket was really tender. They gave A LOT of turnip but that's okay - I'm a fan! *Beef Chow Mian: Make sure to get it liangmian huang -- meaning that it's crispy!! I really enjoyed the tender cuts of flank and the fact that it wasn't super oily. *Sautéed Pea Shoots: this dish isn't on the menu itself. It's written on a pink piece of paper taped to the wall. If you haven't had pea shoots, I highly recommend it! It's pretty mild and is almost like a more robust spinach. For the 4 dishes, we spent $58 pre-tip. The price points are higher than I'm used to in SoCal but we had leftovers for DAYS. read more

This is a nice family owned restaurant that serves authentic, high quality Chinese food. I came here with my family and we enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. The rice noodles with beef and black bean sauce was really good. They used fresh instead of dry rice noodles and there was a generous amount of beef and bell peppers in the dish. The deep fried pork chops with sweet and sour sauce (aka Peking pork chops) were great. They use center cut pork chops, so the meat isn't fatty like it is at a lot of other restaurants. The sauce was pretty tasty, but a touch more vinegary than I'm used to. I also didn't like how much food coloring they put in it. We got a mixed seafood warbar that had a good mix of fresh seafood, vegetables, and fried crispy rice. I didn't try the salted fish and chicken tofu pot since I'm not a fan of that in general, but my family said the tofu was fresh and it was delicious. The dishes here have large portions and are reasonably priced. It's one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area and we'll definitely be back. read more

Stopped in to this small family restaurant based upon the great Yelp reviews. After one meal here I need to add my own shout out to this excellent restaurant. I find that many Chinese restaurants in metro Detroit produce food that doesn't seem very homemade. Not so at China Chef. I had the delicious deep fried pork chop with garlic appetizer. The peatip leafs in garlic stock was amazing. Best thing I ate tonight. My daughter loved the beef brisket and wonton soup. Brisket was nice and tender while not too fatty. My wife recommends the Mongolian Beef which was tender with good vegetables. We will be back. read more

Wow...I really do not understand the reviews for this place. In my never ending quest to find good, flavorful Chinese food, I decided to give this place a try based on the reviews, but I have to say it was disappointing. We love crab rangoons and fried dumplings, so we try them at every new Chinese place to get a baseline comparison. These were good...nothing spectacular, but a solid choice. We also tried the chicken fried rice, another staple of ours. Again, it was solid, but unspectacular. The entrees are where they really missed the mark. The beef pan fried noodles were unimpressive. You could barely pull apart the noodles because they were so overcooked. The beef was tough and not very flavorful. We also had the Szechuan chicken, which was another disappointment. We asked for medium spice, but it was shockingly bland. The vegetables were in giant pieces, which made it difficult to eat. One additional annoyance: while I like getting the most for my money, the packages were ridiculously overstuffed. You couldn't get the food out without making a mess! To their credit, they did do a nice job with handling the pickup process in accordance with good social distancing and safety guidelines. I'm glad I gave it a try, but the quest for the perfect Chinese restaurant will go on. read more

I'm giving this place 5 stars because authentic Cantonese cuisine is hard to find in the metro Detroit area and this place happens to be the best one I have found so far. Why do I think this place is authentic? Well for starters this place serves classic dishes that you won't find in Americanized Chinese restaurants. Second, having eaten Chinese food a majority of my life, I think I can recognize good Chinese food when I taste it. The food here reminds me of my childhood!! Also it doesn't hurt that when I walked in I could tell I was in a Chinese restaurant. Chinese calendars, writing, and decor were visible a mile away. We got the spring rolls, yang chow fried rice, and xo fish filet eggplant hotpot for takeout. Everything was delicious!! Portions were also very big. We had enough for leftovers the next day. After having been in China for a few weeks I was in need of some good, authentic Chinese food. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend who said he comes here when he's homesick for Chinese food. It hit the spot. The food is fast, fresh and delicious. The restaurant is located in a strip mall tucked in the corner. The inside of the restaurant is small, only 7 or 8 tables but some are large round tables that can seat at least 5. It is very simple inside, minimal decor, plastic table cloths. Service is great, fast and attentive. Their menu is extensive relative to the authentic dishes, lots of seafood options along with beef and chicken, a few vegetarian dishes as well. On the back of the menu they have locally, popular dishes available like almond boneless chicken, general tso, and sweet and sour. We ordered the chicken and pan fried noodles, chicken with black bean sauce hot pot, pork belly with sautéed cabbage, and kung pao chicken. All were equally good and served in sizable portions enough for four persons. The chicken with pan fried noodles was especially notable as it had a light, tasty sauce with sautéed fresh vegetables and chicken on top of the fried noodles. Prices are reasonable for the portions served. This will be a go-to from now on for Chinese food. read more

The owners are nice and there's always locals enjoying their meals. there's a lunch menu or my go-to is the dinner menu so you can pick a couple entrees to share with friends. Start off with some hot tea and then order some appetizers like salt n pepper tofu and the calamari. It's seasoned just right and the crunch from breading is quite delicious. For the dinner entrees, there's so much to choose from so perfect to share. We would order the XO sauce with eggplant and deep-fried fish fillet hotpot (arrives sizzling to your table!), Deep Fried Pork Chops w/ Pepper and Salt, Spicy Ma Po Tofu, Curry Beef Brisket Lo Mein, Shredded Beef Udon w/ Black Pepper Sauce, and Seafood Fried Rice. Still stuffed as I write. My friend introduced me to this small, lively family spot. Placed at the end of an unassuming strip mall on Rochester Rd. We arrived early on a Saturday night and the place was already hopping. We had a wait for the table and got to witness the frenetic pace of the place. Lots of take out, leftovers, and food. We ordered a lot to get a taste- well it was ordered for me- and I tasted everything. It was all great! The fish fish was my favorite of the night, closely followed by the shrimp, noodles, and chicken. The hot pot was my least favorite. However it was tasty and stew like in its consistency- well made. I called twice no one answered. I arrive to the restaurant at 7:00pm. After waiting 10 minutes at the counter, the owner comes to assist the white customer who just walked in. She then proceeds to tell me they do not have enough rice for shrimp fried rice and it would 35-45 minutes for a small egg drop soup and wonton soup. This was definitely a case of racism or being overwhelmed. read more

I can't believe I never reviewed this place. This has got to be my favorite authentic Chinese restaurant. Whenever we visit, this restaurant is packed and I can understand why. The food is ridiculously delicious. The only item I wasn't too fond of was their crab Rangoon but everything else was amazing. The food always comes out fresh and hot with big portions especially their noodles and fried rice. My favorite dishes are their fried pork chops, beef hot pot and salt and pepper squid. Their pork fried rice is probably the best I have had. All the noodle dishes I have had were all tasty. Don't forget their spring rolls... amazing!!! My husband and I usually get carry out but there is seating areas but just limited. If you order carry out, I would recommend calling ahead since the wait might be a little long. Probably one of the best Cantonese Chinese restaurants in Metro Detroit. The HUGE drawback is the place is very small (8 or so tables) and they do not take reservations pass ~5:30PM on non-Holidays. No reservations taken on holidays, PERIOD... It would be wonderful if they can take reservations guaranteed by a credit card and charge $100 or more for no-shows. We drive a good 45 minutes from the western suburbs to dine here and don't want to risk a long wait. Regardless, when we can get in, it's always a delight as the cuisine is very authentic. The restaurant staff is very stretched so don't expect "service". Just be happy they don't bark at you ! read more

First time here and there were 4 people waiting for carry out and 2 diners. Small inside and lack of decor however the reviews state this is more of a carry out place. Two women working and were pleasant. Menu taped to counter a wide selection. I proceed to order and wasn't told how long the wait would be so I sat on a chair next to the counter. Noticed that they serve beverages in a can and there was a loud noise every few minutes which sounded like a giant fan! Both tables checked out while I was waiting and everyone said the food was excellent so I was super excited waiting. The dumplings were good filled with plenty of protein. Won ton soup needed just a little more salt (preference) and the General Tao's chicken was very delicious. Large pieces of chicken that was tender. Again a little more spice for me, I ordered it medium - not much kick! Next time I will try there noodle dishes and I know to order spicy. read more

This place is the best Chinese food around. It doesn't seem like much when you drive by but this place is a hidden gem. Family owned and operated they have ALWAYS made my family feel comfortable and they always take care of us. I have Celiac Disease and am gluten free and they make whatever dishes they can for me specially gluten free! Delicious authentic Chinese food! They are so cheap for so much food they give and if you ask them to do something special they go above and beyond. We are a family of 3 and usually order 1-2 dishes and that feeds us 2-3 meals. Ever since they changed owners here, I have been very pleased with their food/service here. It is best to come here with a bunch of people so you can do family style and sample a little bit of everything. The last time I came here was on Christmas; they were super busy but still managed to make the food come out quickly and taste just as delicious.
