I came from Las Vegas looking for some good chinese food and my girlfriend told me about this place.i ordered a house shrimp friend rice and the mongolian beef 12 dollar combination plate.the mongolian beef was not good.it was mostly chopped up onions with barely any beef at all lol then the shrimp fried was had 3 shrimp in it.where is all the meat? I ordered over the phone shrimp chow mein and the lady says "with vegetables?" and I reiterated 2x the normal chow mein with shrimp. i open my food at home and and there are no noodles in the chow mein, just vegetables! We were super impressed with the food and speed of service here. We did take out with wonton soup and crab meat rangoon and everything was absolutely delicious. It was flavorful, the crab meat rangoon had scallions in the filling that really elevated it. I love savory rangoon filling over the sweeter ones because the sweet sauce gives that balance. I ordered to go and got the Hunan combination which was described as Hunan chicken with sweet and sour shrimp. Seemed like an interesting combination. Also got the fried wontons for am appetizer. The wontons were very oily and soggy where the meat was held. It also didn't have much of a crunch..strange. The combination dish wasn't as I expected. They serve a to-go container and split it half and half... My bad assumption for it being a Hunan style dish with shrimp added? The Hunan chicken was okay on flavor but some of the vegetables were ice cold. The sweet and sour shrimp was on the way sour side. Perhaps my own taste, but I've never had anything close to this flavor when it comes to sweet and sour and it was not preferential. This is a small cramped Chinese Restaurant. My aunts love this place so I thought why not. I got there with only about 40 minutes left before their lunch buffet ended. They even said if we needed longer they'd leave it out. That all sounds great, but the food apparently had been out a long time already. Nothing was hot, mostly the food was luke warm at best. Each time we have ordered from here it has been perfect. I try to order double the amount for good leftovers. The Cashew Chicken is loaded with cashews. I started going here years ago while working a split shift job; lunch time was 9pm and this place was the only joint close by. It was also cheap, fast and generous! That job is long gone but my family and I have remained loyal customers. We usually get take out and every once in a great while, they surprise us with a free appetizer or order of warm, sugared biscuits. YUM!!! The dining atmosphere isn't super ambient; however, it is very clean and welcoming for families with children of any age. The day time buffet is a pretty good deal, too if you want to eat in (I think they let you fill a to-go container for the buffet price, too?!). The other great feature of China City is they are adaptable to your tastes or dietary needs: just ask them and they will make your order exactly how you want it (and probably remember you wanted it like that the next time you go in to, without even asking). (Side note to those who give China City a poor review: you're right, it doesn't compare to a full service restaurant like Lai Thai or First Wok. Those places are way more expensive, for one thing; are set up for an ambient in-house dining experience; and, are not always quite as generous, either. I've had some bad meals at one of the aforementioned - more often than I have here at China City! People tend to develop a "taste" for certain restaurants for sure and a trying a new place may have your taste buds pissed off, I don't know. The portions are HUGE, you can definitely get at least two meals out of a combo dinner, and their eggrolls are greasy and crunchy and delicious (don't judge me, I like what I like). THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECIEVED. I have been going here for a few years and always had to pile my stryophome plate on top of a huge overflowing stryophome pile. This final time I thought I would merely make a suggestion so I went up to the lady at the counter and complimented her on their food but politely gave the a suggestion of cutting down on stryophome. She exclaimed that it was not cost effective to hire a dishwasher. I exclained that I completely understood but they could change over to biodegradable paper. She then got very rude and said nobody has complained about this. I then said well I think it would be just as cost effective and all around a better solution. She then said buy to me then called me CRAZY! I politely asked her for her name she said it was Sarre and then said I could talk to her manager or go and kept muttering crazy. At this point she was raising her voice and making a scene ...I still have not altered my temper and even mannered. At this point i was embarrassed and humiliated. When I first approached her I was actually a loyal happy customer!!!!! All she had to do to get be done with me was to say I apreciate the suggestion....instead she completely went ballistic called me crazy and DEFINITELY lost a customer for life. read more

One of the best Chinese rest in GR and great price.

This place proves that anyone can open a Chinese restaurant. The food contains MSG and large amounts of salt while still resulting in a bland and boring taste. I visited China City a total of 3 times in the month of July to give an honest try. Both Hot and Sour and Eggdrop soups are bland with little veggies, chicken and broccoli did not taste very good, sesame chicken was okay but the sauce was not sesame. The food price is low because they cut corners and use inferior ingredients. I recommend Lai Thai Kitchen on Leonard or First Wok on Alpine as an alternative for Chinese food in the area. read more
