After reading a bunch of reviews, we decided to book this bed and breakfast for our minimoon in August. We arrived late at night but there were instructions for us at the front desk for us to get into our rooms. Right away we felt the charm of this location. The best way I could describe it is Dragonfly Inn for any Gilmore Girls fans out there. There was something so cozy and quaint about it that we immediately liked. Our room and bed were very cozy, and even had a little balcony space for us to sit out. The breakfast served each morning was delicious and a great way to fuel for a day of activities. It's very conveniently located in town, the price point was reasonable, and the owners are truly so so nice. We would 100% recommend staying here if you're in Ouray, and my husband and I are looking forward to returning!

I'd love to yell it from the rooftops - this place is PHENOMENAL. The owners, Charlie and Melissa, are just wonderful. I've never felt more welcomed and comfortable with perfect strangers. This was my first time staying at a b&b and it makes me never want to visit another hotel again. The breakfast was amazing - simple, but oh so tasty - waffles, bacon, eggs and fresh fruit. The coffee never stopped flowing. Charlie was quite the 'server' and has so many stories and relatable tales and tips to share. Chatting with him was possibly the highlight of my breakfast! The room was clean and comfortable. The shower was superb. The view was fantastic. Big beautiful windows to watch the snow fall with dainty white curtains. A wonderful fire place to really add ambiance. Everything about this home is striking and beautiful. I will definitely make it a point to come back! Would highly recommend.

My husband and I pulled up on a snowy night after Christmas. I was delighted by the illuminated hanging sign announcing the Clipper Inn with its Christmas bow. Breathtaking garlands and bows lit the flight of stairs to the generous porch. The front door is embellished with frosted and beveled glass. This is only the first of the details that make this newly built Victorian a visual treasure. Once inside, the furnishings reminded me of the homes of wealthy sea traders on Nantucket and in Salem MA: for example, the Chinese Chippendale in the dining room. The building itself was designed by a navy commander, Earl Yarbrough. Our room was luxurious, with a four-poster and a floral chenille bedspread, a bath and a generous closet. The warm and experienced host and hostess, Rich and Linae Leavens, keep an eye on every detail, and the inn is immaculate. This inn has two comfortable libraries upstairs and downstairs. Each has a fireplace and an impressive collection of non-fiction and fiction, bequeathed by Commander Yarbrough. Rich made delicious breakfasts from scratch every morning: omelettes, potatoes and fruit; pancakes and sausage; quiche. I especially enjoyed their coffee. We left with happy memories. What a fantastic bed and breakfast with such marvelous, friendly, amiable proprietors. Charlie and Melissa were so wonderful and are absolutely cut out to run a facility of this quality. We are so glad we spent three quiet nights here in August, just a very short walk away from everything downtown. We enjoyed every minute of the beautiful Captain's Quarters room that we chose. We so enjoyed the aspen trees outside of our room, the windows that you can open and let the breeze in (without much risk of bugs), the ample space inside and on the private balcony, and the soft, comfortable bed. We so wanted to use the gas fireplace in our room, but the weather was surprisingly too warm during our stay, with unusual highs in the low 80s! In fact, we ran the wall air conditioner several times, and we were so glad the room offered it! We also appreciated the wi-fi that worked flawlessly while we were there, as it is hard to get away even to Ouray without some need to use the internet these days! The entire house is beautifully decorated and inviting. Although I grabbed a book about local history from one of their bookshelves and read it next to the bay window in a comfy chair in my room, I easily could have done the same in one of the comfortable chairs in the sitting room down the hall or the library downstairs, across from the dining area. Melissa whips up delicious breakfasts every day, and Charlie will cheerfully share stories and local tips with you as you eat at one of their cheerful tables for two or at the large dining table with other guests. We asked him several questions about the area, and he always had an answer. Our only regret is that he and his wife weren't around when we left so we could thank them. So I hope this favorable review will count as our sincerest thanks for helping to make our stay in Ouray as memorable as it was. For sure, we will be checking in here again if we ever come back for another stay in beautiful Ouray. :o)

    Amazing breakfast by the hosts!

This really is a special place! The hosts really went above and beyond to make it a beautiful experience during your stay. They are very pleasant and warm. Loved the cinnamon bread they had left for guests all day. Delicious! Even the breakfast in the morning was super nice ( coffee, juice, bacon, eggs and pancakes) and with sunroom, it only gets better. The property is super clean, elegant and very well kept! This is better experience than staying at a hotel! Would highly recommend staying here. We were there for only one night but wished we were there for longer and enjoy the room as well. Loved the experience!!!

We stayed 4 nights for our wedding in Ouray at this beautiful bed & breakfast. We loved everything about our room "Captain's Quarters" from the comfortable bed to the charming balcony under the aspen trees. Melissa & Charlie really go above and beyond to make you feel right at home. They were so sweet & helpful and made our wedding day even more memorable just by the kind words & support they shared with us. And let's not forget the delicious breakfasts Melissa prepared every morning & warm cookies welcoming you back after your days of adventure in the afternoons.

Quite simply, The China Clipper is a slice of heaven. Charming, clean, quaint setting with no detail left unturned and owners that don't miss a beat. The breakfast service is quick but inviting and delicious. Charlie and Melissa's time as dairy farmers prior to owning this beautiful property is apparent in their constant attentiveness and hard work to make everyone's stay something to write home about. My husband and I will never regret our long weekend with them and we will be back.

We stayed in the Romance of the Seas room at the China Clipper for a couple of nights during our 20th wedding anniversary, and I must say we were blown away by how perfect it all was. Our room's king-sized bed was as comfortable as they come, and we took full advantage of our room's awesome Jacuzzi tub as well. The entire house was immaculately and spotlessly clean, and the family who runs this place is purely and exceptionally friendly. The blueberry muffins which were made available during our stay here were outrageously delicious, as were the snicker-doodle cookies. Seriously, I doubt there's any other place in this town which can provide a better experience over the China Clipper. I don't see how anything could possibly go awry should you choose to stay here.

    Our incredible room. Wow!

Wow! Customer service is alive and well at the China Clipper! Our Innkeeper, Ingrid, greeted us with a warm smile and a beautiful Bed and Breakfast. Breakfast was wonderful, and fresh! This is the place to stay, if you are looking for a warm atmosphere, clean, beautiful room, and a fabulous breakfast! We are already looking forward to our next stay.

A cozy, romantic bed & breakfast

The China Clipper Inn made our stay in Ouray a memorable one. The hosts, Melissa and Charlie are wonderful, accommodating, and their breakfasts are so delicious (quiche, sausage, potatoes/pancakes, eggs, bacon)!! Every day a treat was placed on the buffet for guests (homemade cookies, pumpkin bread) as well as coffee and tea. The rooms are cozy, very clean, and we really loved the fireplace!!! A romantic stay, highly recommended, you'll love Ouray even more!!

We stayed at this delightful bed and breakfast for 2 days during slow season. Melissa and Charles welcomed us and gave us run of the house...as they put it. Charming decor, wonderful breakfast, easy parking and a warm reception! Our room was unique and so accommodating to relaxing. Easy walk to Main Street, shops, restaurants, etc. Also only a short drive to the wonderful hot springs. Highly recommend this lovely location!

Wonderful Inn! The owners are so hospitable and provide a welcoming environment. The food was great, rooms were clean, we are dreaming about our next trip to ouray to stay here already!

Claire C and I came to Ouray over Thanksgiving weekend and stayed at the China Clipper for two nights. I am so glad we did. It is beautiful and the inn keepers are so nice and friendly. We stayed in room #8 on the second floor looking North. It was super cool to wake up and look out the windows at those amazing mountains in the mornings. And I was even happy to get up before 9:30 when breakfast ended because breakfast was so darn good. The first day was a great omelette and the second was a serve yourself hot breakfast buffet. We noticed the walls were a bit thin one night (if you know what I mean) but hey we are all adults and after a great dip in the hot springs and a few beers from Ouray Brewing who could blame them. I would highly recommend this place to anyone making the trip in from out of town. I bet Claire C and I will be back. Thanks China Clipper

No formal check in, the key was in the door of your room for entry. They were outstanding for our entire stay. Breakfast each day was delicious, Elizabeth's stuffed French toast was the best. They asked each day if we had any food limitations which was nice to add or delete ingredients for a breakfast made to order. The last day friendly Laura was the chef for breakfast and did a fabulous job. At 5:00pm they had a happy hour with beer, wine and delicious cookies. We met other couples and visited in the reception area daily each with adventures of the day in Ouray. The location is beautiful and quiet with a short walk to the main street of the town. Parking is perfect right in front of the manor. The outdoor hot tub was the best after daytime hiking. Towels and robes were provided in a basket in the reception area. The hot tub had 7 powerful jets on your back and feet and it was never busy. Room 10 on the second floor at the end of the hallway was spacious with high ceilings and a jetted bathtub. It was nice to have 2 entry doors, one from inside the manor and a 2nd door to enter from the outside to the outdoor hot tub. This was our 1st stay at a B&B in the USA and it was a wonderful experience. The staff at Black Bear Manor made you feel welcomed and at home. Thank you Elizabeth, Conner and Laura!

I was a guest of my family's and they booked a room for them and then they booked a room for me and my guest. I was along for the ride. My family said check out was at 11, but it was actually at 10. This was our bad and mistakes happen. I mean, we travel all over the world staying at hotels and we got our time wrong for the first time. It happens. Apparently, this was a major mistake that sent their housekeeping operation into a frenzy. We went to breakfast around 10:10 after packing our stuff up so we could quickly grab it by 11 and head out. Around 10:36, I received 5 back to back calls, plus two text messages from the hotel. I answered the 6th call, as my phone was stored away from being able to feel the vibration. When I answered, a woman told me that check out was actually 10. I apologized profusely and said we would be right there. We left immeadiately and headed over, and I sent a text to them explaining that I had been told a different check in time. When we arrived to our room, our keys had already been deactivated. No problem, we planned on going to the front desk. This is where problems began, I turned to my family and said our keys had been deactivated. At that time, a woman came towards me in the parking lot yelling that check out time was at 10. I told her sorry I was told a different time and we just needed to grab our stuff and we would be out within 10 seconds. She unlocked our door, still lecturing us, and FOLLOWED US INTO THE ROOM STILL COMPLAINING THAT IT WAS AFTER CHECK OUT. She stood there and said we signed a paper stating we would check out at 10 (okay, my bad, I thought my family had asked for a late check out). And then pointed towards the door and kept saying "Did you not read on the door that check out was at 10?" Tapping it over and over again. I just stopped engaging with her. It was very rude and annoying. I stated it was a mistake and came to get my things right away and was still treated like that. The worst thing is that this was our last resort hotel because every else was booked. The front desk was so so nice and relaxed, but whoever the lady was needs to learn some hospitality. It was an honest mistake and I was followed around and lectured like a child. We will definitely not stay at this hotel again. Lesson learned, booked earlier. The AC smells musty there, but other than that everything was okay.

My mother (65+) had the best of intentions to book a stay here for our family including my 90 year old grandmother. She booked it a month in advance and was asked to pay ~$300 in advance for a "suite," and room for all of us. As a word of caution, it is never ok for a hotel to ask for all the money up front. A deposit is normal but not the entire amount. After driving for hours we arrived. Upon arrival, the entrance was not clearly marked. Upon searching, there was a gate with a cell number to call to check in. I called this number and a man shows up in beatup truck with a dog in tow. He immediately told us that he had given part of our room reservations away. There was never a phone call to let us know about this change. He also told us that there were two beds in one room without a bathroom on the bottom floor but we could use the shared bathroom upstairs with 3 other rooms. (I believe that this is a hostel situation?) When we expressed concern about my grandmother's mobility, he offered us a bucket to use. When he showed us the room, the stench of urine punched us in the face. I am not sure other guests elected for the "bucket offer." Additionally, the mattresses appeared to be in accordion arrangement with dirty linens. As tension built, one of the people in our party requested restitution for the inconvenience of getting there and our room being double booked. When this was requested, the owner told us that we needed to leave. According to many reviews we have read in retrospect, this is a common pattern from the owner of this hotel. In the midst of this chaos I took my grandmother across the street to get a soda and food. We learned more about this business from the owner of the restaurant. We learned that he has been in conflict with other business owners in this town. Avoid this place at all costs as nothing good can come from doing business with this hotel.

I also appreciated that two of the pools are adults only, which made it feel even more relaxing. The caves were open during our visit and included both a dry sauna and steam room. There's also a water filling station inside, which is honestly a smart touch considering the heat and altitude. I booked directly through their website and chose the "Lodging, Spa & Spritzer Package," which was a really good value. It included: * Breakfast buffet each morning * A bucket of spritzer wine at arrival * Two robes * Daily hot springs passes * A $25 credit to the Mineshaft restaurant * A $100 spa credit at Sage Spa The breakfast buffet actually exceeded expectations with a good variety of options, and the pizza at Mineshaft was delicious. Service throughout the property was friendly and courteous. We arrived during a warm, sunny stretch in mid-April and left during a snowy day, which honestly made the hot springs experience even better. The pools stay open during snowfall, and soaking while snow falls around the mountains was such a cool experience. The only downside was that it was off-season, so there was some construction happening around the property and we could hear power tools during parts of the day. The rooms are also a bit outdated right now, but it's obvious they're actively working on upgrades and renovations. The evenings were much quieter and the relaxing spa music around the pools helped create a really peaceful atmosphere. Overall, this was a great getaway and I'm excited to come back once the remodel updates are complete.

We had a king accessible room so it was probably a little different from the regular rooms. It was spacious but one of the lights wasn't working so we had to drag a lamp over to the table area. There was a microwave and good size fridge and a small, pod coffee maker on the dresser. IMO the coffee was pretty good. Our couch also pulled out into a bed. They had coffee/tea in the lobby and passed out brown bag breakfasts in the morning. Our bathroom could have used some counter space but there wasn't any. The shower was tiny but did have a bench and grab bars. The whole thing was porta-potty sized and only had a hand held sprayer with very weak water pressure, but it was clean. They did provide bar soap and had shampoo and body wash dispensers in the shower. The whole room was pretty clean and almost bug free - which for Colorado mountain towns says a lot. It was showing some wear but it was nice to have the air conditioning unit even if it was noisy and didn't work very well. There was also a portable floor fan in the small closet along with a luggage stand and bench for the shower. If someone needs an accessible room this one was very complete. I chatted with John, the owner, a couple of times and he is very nice and pretty mellow. His daughter Laura is also very friendly and sweet. Really the biggest issue we had was lack of maid service. When I went to ask about clean towels, John told me to put our used ones on the chair outside our door. We did that the next day at 7am, got back to the room about 3:30pm and the used towels were gone but there were no new ones. I went to the lobby and got towels and when we left for dinner there was a stack of clean towels on the chair. No one ever emptied our trash or even checked the room the whole week. It wasn't that we needed much but the website and handout we received both stated they had daily maid service. For $250/night I would have expected better communication. I did really enjoy the firepit area and hot tubs and we were able to have friends over one evening to socialize on the patio. They had games outside on the grass for everyone to play. The kids staying there really enjoyed those. I even saw guest sitting outside in their chairs, reading books, and enjoying the scenery. It was also a very quick walk to the Main Street in town. Only a block away. This place will hold a place in my heart forever.

This is our second time staying at Ouray Inn (24 & 26). Upon arriving, it was their HH and they had…read morewine and fresh baked cookies. . There were s verbal groups talking and enjoying the sips and treats. This trip we stayed in a king room (108). It was very clean and had a nice homey feel to it. Our tv had a little glitchy and Mark came right away and got it working for us. The bed in this room needs to be replaced. It has seen better days with both of us sinking together in the middle. The pillows were way too firm. The shower was hot and had great pressure. We both woke up early and decided to hit the road. We thought we would get some coffee before we headed out (7:25a and breakfast started at 7:30). Mark and Phoebe were the greatest. They made the best included breakfast we have ever had at any hotel. The eggs were cooked perfect and their sausage was so good. I had 2 and my BF had 3! They also served roasted potatoes that were so flavorful. Homemade muffins too. . We also met several nice people and talked with Mark & Phoebe. We ended up staying g till 8:30. This Inn is located a block from everything. I would stay here again when I'm in Ouray and recommend the Ouray Inn.
