After reading a bunch of reviews, we decided to book this bed and breakfast for our minimoon in August. We arrived late at night but there were instructions for us at the front desk for us to get into our rooms. Right away we felt the charm of this location. The best way I could describe it is Dragonfly Inn for any Gilmore Girls fans out there. There was something so cozy and quaint about it that we immediately liked. Our room and bed were very cozy, and even had a little balcony space for us to sit out. The breakfast served each morning was delicious and a great way to fuel for a day of activities. It's very conveniently located in town, the price point was reasonable, and the owners are truly so so nice. I'd love to yell it from the rooftops - this place is PHENOMENAL. The owners, Charlie and Melissa, are just wonderful. I've never felt more welcomed and comfortable with perfect strangers. This was my first time staying at a b&b and it makes me never want to visit another hotel again. The breakfast was amazing - simple, but oh so tasty - waffles, bacon, eggs and fresh fruit. The coffee never stopped flowing. Charlie was quite the 'server' and has so many stories and relatable tales and tips to share. Chatting with him was possibly the highlight of my breakfast! The room was clean and comfortable. The shower was superb. The view was fantastic. Big beautiful windows to watch the snow fall with dainty white curtains. A great, cozy and friendly place to stay in a great location in Ouray! Highly recommend.

My husband and I pulled up on a snowy night after Christmas. I was delighted by the illuminated hanging sign announcing the Clipper Inn with its Christmas bow. Breathtaking garlands and bows lit the flight of stairs to the generous porch. The front door is embellished with frosted and beveled glass. This is only the first of the details that make this newly built Victorian a visual treasure. Once inside, the furnishings reminded me of the homes of wealthy sea traders on Nantucket and in Salem MA: for example, the Chinese Chippendale in the dining room. The building itself was designed by a navy commander, Earl Yarbrough. Our room was luxurious, with a four-poster and a floral chenille bedspread, a bath and a generous closet. The warm and experienced host and hostess, Rich and Linae Leavens, keep an eye on every detail, and the inn is immaculate. This inn has two comfortable libraries upstairs and downstairs. Each has a fireplace and an impressive collection of non-fiction and fiction, bequeathed by Commander Yarbrough. Rich made delicious breakfasts from scratch every morning: omelettes, potatoes and fruit; pancakes and sausage; quiche. I especially enjoyed their coffee. We left with happy memories. What a fantastic bed and breakfast with such marvelous, friendly, amiable proprietors. Charlie and Melissa were so wonderful and are absolutely cut out to run a facility of this quality. We are so glad we spent three quiet nights here in August, just a very short walk away from everything downtown. We enjoyed every minute of the beautiful Captain's Quarters room that we chose. We so enjoyed the aspen trees outside of our room, the windows that you can open and let the breeze in (without much risk of bugs), the ample space inside and on the private balcony, and the soft, comfortable bed. We so wanted to use the gas fireplace in our room, but the weather was surprisingly too warm during our stay, with unusual highs in the low 80s! In fact, we ran the wall air conditioner several times, and we were so glad the room offered it! We also appreciated the wi-fi that worked flawlessly while we were there, as it is hard to get away even to Ouray without some need to use the internet these days! The entire house is beautifully decorated and inviting. Although I grabbed a book about local history from one of their bookshelves and read it next to the bay window in a comfy chair in my room, I easily could have done the same in one of the comfortable chairs in the sitting room down the hall or the library downstairs, across from the dining area. Melissa whips up delicious breakfasts every day, and Charlie will cheerfully share stories and local tips with you as you eat at one of their cheerful tables for two or at the large dining table with other guests. We asked him several questions about the area, and he always had an answer. Our only regret is that he and his wife weren't around when we left so we could thank them. So I hope this favorable review will count as our sincerest thanks for helping to make our stay in Ouray as memorable as it was. For sure, we will be checking in here again if we ever come back for another stay in beautiful Ouray. :o) read more

This really is a special place! The hosts really went above and beyond to make it a beautiful experience during your stay. They are very pleasant and warm. Loved the cinnamon bread they had left for guests all day. Delicious! Even the breakfast in the morning was super nice ( coffee, juice, bacon, eggs and pancakes) and with sunroom, it only gets better. The property is super clean, elegant and very well kept! This is better experience than staying at a hotel! Would highly recommend staying here. We were there for only one night but wished we were there for longer and enjoy the room as well. We stayed in the Romance of the Seas room at the China Clipper for a couple of nights during our 20th wedding anniversary, and I must say we were blown away by how perfect it all was. Our room's king-sized bed was as comfortable as they come, and we took full advantage of our room's awesome Jacuzzi tub as well. The entire house was immaculately and spotlessly clean, and the family who runs this place is purely and exceptionally friendly. The blueberry muffins which were made available during our stay here were outrageously delicious, as were the snicker-doodle cookies. Seriously, I doubt there's any other place in this town which can provide a better experience over the China Clipper. I don't see how anything could possibly go awry should you choose to stay here. read more

I decided to take my girlfriend to Ouray to celebrate new years because Id seen how special it was in this cute town, and wow did it not disappoint. However, despite all the town had to offer, the greatest part of our stay was being at the Clipper Inn. Kristen went above and beyond to ensure the comfort of our stay, including giving me her personal cell number in case I needed any help or had any further inquiries. Every single breakfast I had was world class and made me excited about the morning (that's not typical of me). Her and her sweet son were always on standby to help for whatever the reason, and I have nothing but love and prayers for her and her family. Charming decor, wonderful breakfast, easy parking and a warm reception! Our room was unique and so accommodating to relaxing. Claire C and I came to Ouray over Thanksgiving weekend and stayed at the China Clipper for two nights. I am so glad we did. It is beautiful and the inn keepers are so nice and friendly. We stayed in room #8 on the second floor looking North. It was super cool to wake up and look out the windows at those amazing mountains in the mornings. And I was even happy to get up before 9:30 when breakfast ended because breakfast was so darn good. The first day was a great omelette and the second was a serve yourself hot breakfast buffet. We noticed the walls were a bit thin one night (if you know what I mean) but hey we are all adults and after a great dip in the hot springs and a few beers from Ouray Brewing who could blame them. When I hear the term B & B my skin kinda crawls. I think of plastic sheets soaked in fabric softener, scented room fresheners, overly-perfumed soap and oodles of cutesy Hobby Lobby style adornments. Welcome to The China Clipper where the owners, who are not only totally sweet, but finely tuned to their property. It's kept immaculately clean so there is no need to overburden the traveler with an assault of conflicting aromas. The rooms and beds are solidly comfortable with nice sheet, towels and pillows. The breakfast is delicious. I think Hans makes the muffins which can be dangerous even when spending the day hiking in the area. All in all, I agree with the other reviewers: I've never stayed in a B & B this nice and comfortable. Ten stars would be more appropriate. I will make an effort to return here. I would give this B&B more than 5 stars if I could. Stayed here for a ski vacation in Telluride as the accommodations are much more affordable (Telluride was $400-$500 a night). I'm so glad we chose China Clipper Inn. The town of Ouray is beautiful and scenic, the "Switzerland of Colorado". It's surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, and while there are tourists and vacationers the town has a laidback relaxed vibe. China Clipper itself is a charming property. The rooms are well equipped with comfy beds and many have their own built in jacuzzis. The best part of the stay were Charlie and Melissa, the inn keepers who are incredibly gracious hosts. They serve a hearty breakfast every morning and went out of their way to make us food to takeaway when we had an early departure. The Inn itself has beautiful common areas to lounge about, read a book, do work or enjoy a bottle of wine. I recommend sitting into the indoor patio overlooking the entrance! read more

China Clipper has set the bar for my opinion of what a Bed and Breakfast should be. It's just a block off of the main street, easy walking to distance to all of the local spots. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and I loved that we had bath robes. What makes China Clipper such a memorable stay for us wasn't the room, or the hot tub (which was a huge plus), or the breakfast (which was so good every morning), but it was the staff who made our stay so pleasant. Ingrid was an incredible host, and made our stay what it was. She was very welcoming, kind, and gave us tremendous advice on where to go hiking and where to get dinner. Wow, this is probably the nicest B&B I have ever stayed at. The host's were super nice and attentive to every detail and request we had. The accommodations were beautiful and very clean. The house was built in '95 as a B&B in the Victorian style and furnished with many antiques. It has all the character of a historical property with all the modern amenities. The breakfast was awesome. For dinner, check out Outlaw's restaurant just around the corner- great food and ambiance. I have traveled the world, and this has to be the best B&B I have been to! Hans and Ingrid are a lovely couple who take so much pride in their establishment. The breakfast was amazing to the point I didn't even need lunch every day. I am I writer, and the sitting areas provided me a place to write over 10,000 words with ease. Actually, I was not even planning on writing while in Ouray, but the spirit moved me. I sat in their main room with a fire in the fireplace, the Christmas tree twinkling with white lights, great views of the mountain outside my window with 6 inches of new snow falling throughout the day. The locals are amazing, and the small town has great karma... But avoid the Mexican restaurant (Horrible Margaritas and food!) The activities are endless, and the Hot Springs are a must! Rarely do we stay at a Bed & Breakfast but on our recent visit to Ouray the China Clipper was recommend by a local restauranteur. Needless to say my 5 star rating says it all. This is the best hotel I've ever visited. Hidden gem, definitely. The room is so beautiful. I feel like I am in the palace of an ancient kingdom. We arrived at the China Clipper after driving from South Fork. Charlie greeted us and it was a wonderful experience immediately. He showed us where the ice was, got us into our room, showed us the fresh pastries, fruit, etc. Our one night there was magnificent. Melissa was super nice and accommodated my breakfast needs (GF). Great B&B with lovely innkeepers and friendly, young owners. Just a one minute walk from Ouray's Main Street. We stopped upon a recommendation from the Ouray visitor center and were not disappointed. Innkeeper Pam was lovely, the building meticulously clean and well kept, and the room well sized with all amenities needed. Especially the large tub and the fireplace stood out. The breakfast was homemade and solid. The coffee was great, fresh fruit was served, along with a homemade quiche, sausage, pancakes, breads and muffins, cereal, and yogurt. Wonderful experience. The B&B is about 1/2 block from main street and the central part of town. The innkeepers are very, very nice and extremely helpful with regard to where to go and what to see. I believe they said they had 13 rooms. We looked into several of them which, along with the common areas, were immaculate and smartly furnished. This place is so lovely! Ingrid was so warm and welcoming, not to mention an amazing cook! Breakfast was delicious, the inside of the inn is absolutely beautiful, and the whole of the property inside and out was immaculate. This was my first stay at a B&B(ever!) and I would definitely recommend this place. We were able to book the downstairs suite, which is semi-private, so we were able to watch the snowstorm that came through from our front door. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is because of the bed. Our suite had a bed in the bedroom, and a Murphy bed was available for pull down. Both mattresses were horrible!! They were very springy, and terribly uncomfortable. Other than that, this place is perfection. read more
