They have an extensive menu with lots of choices, including a healthy options section. So last night (before a vegan talk) I ordered stir fried pak choi with oyster sauce (Yes I know that's not vegan) and some soft noodles. Wow was it good, perfectly cooked and seasoned and more than enough to fill me up. I tried some of the salt chilli tofu as well which was pretty amazing too. The service is great and its a popular spot which I always think speaks volumes. (It was busy on a Tuesday night before payday!) My only downside is the décor which is bright and clean but a little dated. With a few very small touches I'd up this to a 5 star in no time. Oh and did I mention, its Bring your own! Macau is a regular spot foe me when I go out with the great bunch of girls I used to work with. One of the group goes to Macau every weekend with her family and she is always greeted like a member of family and by association we are greeted as long time friends too. This isn't the fanciest restaurant in terms of décor and furniture but who cares when the food is so good. I have never had a bad meal in Macau, or indeed an average meal. The food is what I would call authentic Chinese cuisine - no gloopy sauces or unnatural orange colours, just fresh ingredients, crispy vegetables and lots of spice and flavour. The menu has some unusual choices and lots of fish, including a special depending on what fresh fish they have. Last time it was a whole turbot in ginger and chilli which was hard work to eat but worth the effort. The flesh was light and firm and the broth it was in was also light and had beautiful flavours. I had noodles and beansprouts with my fish and some of the special fried rice and both were lovely. Now for some more good news - Macau is byo which means you'll have a fab meal and be able to keep the costs down. Large groups will enjoy the buzzy atmosphere but families are also very well looked after too.

It's not the cheapest chinese place in Belfast - you'll pay about £18 for a fish dish like seabass or dover sole - but I wouldn't say you're paying over the odds either as the quality is good. Beef and chicken dishes - the beef in plum sauce is great and an unusal combo to see on a menu - is from memory over a tenner, but the sides of rice, noodles etc are only £2 so it kind of evens itself out. You can also get pak choi as a side order which again is slightly unusual and really tasty. If you want to go for the full three courses, the set menus would probably be a more cost effective option. I haven't gone for that as I tend to OD on starters (crispy shredded chicken and the old favourite of duck pancakes, plus chilli ribs) and then grind to a half way through my main course. For those who don't like chinese food (and presumably go to a chinese restaurant by mistake) there is the usual chicken maryland or steak. The shame of ordering those though. You may get lucky enough to get parked on the road outside, but I can't vouch for this as I only go out at night by taxi! It's also really worth a visit for dim sum - you have to request the menu. The starters were amazing and set the bar high for the mains. The main course duly arrived and consisted of butter chicken, Rogan josh, saffron rice and nan. The taste was so real it was as if I was sitting in India and eating it!!!! There is an extensive wine and cocktail list- which looked very appealing!! Wine was nice, service lovely and the Artist studio style interior of Cafe Conor ensures it's still one of Belfast's most beautiful restaurants. Unfortunately all this is for nothing if food is a let down. I rated Conor 5 stars over a year ago but now it's a 3. This is not just based on tonight's visit alone, instead in the past year I've had a couple of lunches and dinners here, each flavourless and a bit of a let down. I kept returning because a couple of years ago the food from Cafe Conor was fabulous, tasty and luscious. Their halloumi, green bean and poached egg salad would have topped my list of all time favourite dishes. Sadly this dish is no longer offered.
