Let's start by saying I'm from NY and worked over 20 years near Chinatown. It would be unfair to compare this restaurant to those in NY so I will compare China Star with other restaurants in the area. I ordered several basic dishes. If you can't get the basics right, then you're in the wrong business. Before you say anything, I did not eat all of this at one sitting. Eggroll - A bit small but not bad. Could have used some bits of pork in the filling. Fried pork dumplings - The first one I tried was very dry. I took the rest of the dumplings and placed them in a steamer for a few minutes. That brought them back to life. In most area restaurants, the dumplings are terrible. They are small with little filling and are pretty much comparable to frozen dumplings from the supermarket. Some of them probably are. China Star makes their own. While they are more like shumai than the traditional potstickers, they are very tasty and have the right amount of filling. I would probably lean towards the steamed dumplings next time and I would fry them myself. Sweet and sour chicken - This was done very well. The coating was light and not at all greasy. So many places use too much batter and overcook them. Beef lo mein - Extremely well done. Lots of tender beef with properly sauced noodles. I really enjoyed this. Spareribs and fried rice combo - This is the only dish that I had a problem with. The fried rice had no flavor. The ribs were overcooked and overly sauced. They were a sloppy mess to eat and not worth getting dirty over. Since moving to Daytona Beach Shores 4 years ago, I have been searching for decent Chinese food. Several high rated restaurants were obviously rated by people who don't have a clue. China Star is the first local Chinese restaurant I would go back to. They are definitely not great, but better than any others I have tried in the area. I look forward to trying some other dishes. I just won't order the ribs again. read more

Love there food!!! Best and most reasonable Chinese food in the area! Very large portions. My only complaint is there fried rice is to land,it needs some more flavoring it's like eating white rice it's barely yellow.There crab ragoons are out of this. Just a store-front in the Publix strip mall but great Chinese food. I always order carry-out Hot & Sour Soup, Egg Roll and some kind of chicken entree usually broccoli chicken. Hot & Sour soup is delicious. Egg rolls are crispy and chicken is tender. It's always hot and veggies are not over- cooked and reasonably priced. I got shrimp Lo main and the beef with broccoli combo. In my personal opinion I would say this is "good" Chinese food, not great. The beef is tender and tasty, the broccoli isn't mushy like some of the other places, the carrots actually taste like carrots (who knew), and the sauce is okay. The egg roll while better than some other places tastes heavily of oil. The rice is bland, I have had a lot better rice else where. The Lo main is good, the shrimp are a tad over cooked, but honestly that's just being picky. One thing I will say here is the sauce is runny, really runny. That may have just been my portion but it's almost like a soup, it's super runny. Overall solid spot, I did order on Uber eats they do charge a 99 cent delivery fee, but i mean that's more of a eh then anything else. Definitely better than some of the other Chinese restaurants in town, but one of the best ehhhhh that's yet to be decided. Also it isn't the cheapest joint either with most dishes being 12+ dollars. The best Chinese food I have had in years. I have passed this place so many times because it's just in a strip mall and it's not much to look at. But we got lunch there today, and it was very good. I ordered the beef and broccoli lunch special and an egg roll. The portion was huge and the food was very fresh and flavorful. Now I can't wait to go back again! This is the best Chinese restaurant in the area, hands down! And it's two minutes from my house, which is a huge win! I always order take-out, and I'm never disappointed. And what's funny is that no matter how much I order, the Chinese lady on the phone always says 10 minutes lol. They somehow always pump out all the food you order within 10 minutes. Also, not sure what the amount is, but if you order over a certain amount (I think $10) you get a free soda. The food is pretty good. I moved here from NYC and in NYC you can find amazing Chinese food. I mean go to Chinatown and you are all set. So I was afraid I would never find a place to get my Chinese fix in POrt Orange , but I found it. The food is very good, super fresh. They are super fast.
