My experience with Marvin Chinchilla was completely positive. We trusted him with a very large job on a commercial property. A hall that has very high use as a venue for events. He went above and beyond what I expected. He was extremely easy to work with, has great communication skills, was able to work with our other contractors easily (we had the ceiling replaced with acoustic tiles), had great advice about fixtures, and also interacted with our staff seamlessly. He spent a lot of time on line finding a match for the old installed yard lights, for no charge. He came back to adjust the angle of the motion activated light he installed, so it went on sooner. His prices were very fair and he stuck to them even though my fusyness required more time. He was great at keeping in touch about when he could come. Later i hired him to update the wiring on our daughters house in Richmond after dealing with a non responsive electrician. He came in and took charge. He took out the knob and tube and updated the wiring throughout. He corrected noncompliant work in the kitchen. Marvin did a great job on a number of projects in my old 2 story house: he ran new wires for electric dryer, future induction oven range and helped me hook up a new studio office I built in my backyard. He and his helpers were very professional and respectful, they were super helpful and tried to make everything as clean as possible with minimal impact on opening walls etc. I'm especially grateful that Marvin helped me save a bunch of money by minimizing the trench length (he suggested to run most of the wiring in the crawl space and provided a connector on the outside the house--probably shortened the trench by 70%) I needed to do to connect my studio. Not only that but he also helped me put additional conduits and pull cat6 cables for wired networking so I could have fast internet in my office as well. We hired Marvin Chinchilla based on a superb recommendation from an experienced and trusted bath designer with whom we've worked at Ashby Lumber in Berkeley. He had used Marvin for electrical work during a remodel at his own home. Marvin did extensive work at our house over a 2 week period, even worked on Saturdays to stay on schedule. Both Marvin and his employee were extremely polite, respectful, punctual, hard-working, efficient, and clean. I was home during the entire time. Marvin communicated very well in advance about all changes in scope of the project and costs. There were no surprises about money. He asked for a small deposit the first day of work and asked for payment in full after he had completed all of the work. Other people (caroenters, painters) were also working on our house at the same time and Marvin worked very well and coordinated with everyone. We called Marvin last week to come back and fix something other workers at our house damaged after Marvin finished. Marvin came back without delay and took care of the problem. Last month Marvin rewired all knob-and-tube wiring in our attic and added external lights to our deck. He provided a fair estimate and stayed with it. I hired Marvin to replace my electric panel. He made time to meet me even though he had several projects in the area at various stages, and did a thorough check of the existing panel. He then explained the various options and issues I might face. I appreciated his forthright manner, and once I saw the bid, which was reasonable, I decided to hire him. Marvin did a good job of keeping in touch due to the delays caused by PG&E's backlog and scheduling issues, but since I wasn't in a rush to get the job done the delay didn't matter to me. Once the work started, everything went very smoothly; the work was done expertly and carefully and passed inspection without any problems. We had a great experience working with Marvin - from estimate phase to execution to post-work follow up. Marvin upgraded all (okay 98%) of our 1925 knob and tube wires in our house and installed new electric panels and breakers. He did a meticulous job ... and made suggestions other recommended electricians didn't make. He also fixed some improper wiring from a previous owner's remodel. (He basically did a full audit of our entire electric wiring to ensure it was safe.) With the upgrades, he had to run new cables to the basement electric panels. The other electricians said they'd run the cable on the exterior and place a metal cover as there was no other solution. I assumed this would be what Marvin would say but he walked about, tapped a few walls, then said, "this wall. I can run the cables from the attic to the basement inside this wall." And that's what he did (even though it made his job harder as he had to navigate a small crawl space in the basement) ... and after patching and painting, we can't even tell the wall ever had a large hole in it! His work in the attic is super neat as noted by the HVAC guy when he went up. And Marvin installed a new car charger for us too. We can go on and on, but just want to say he's great, super knowledgeable and easy to work with. He's a good person (and licensed), which is important to us too. We've referred him to many friends who have used him as well. read more
