I made an appointment online and was excited for my evaluation. The "club" aspect of paying a monthly fee and then walking in whenever you want sounded great! I arrived to signs on the building asking everyone to wear masks for the protection of self and others, but when I walked into the Mind and Body office no one was wearing a mask. Not the doctor, not any of the three patients, and no masks or hand sanitizer, nothing. And there's more, I've been to two different Chiropractic offices and I am used to them servicing multiple patients at a time. What I am not used to is it all being in one open room where everyone is just laying on a flat massage table waiting to be serviced. I'm used to my own space with a minimum of curtains, hot packs, bolsters, or a motorized roller chair to loosen me up prior to adjustments. Looking around the room, I didn't see anything that made me think these prep options would be available. The doctor approached me at the reception desk and hastily outlined the documents for me to fill out. They appeared to be mostly about joining the club and no Anatomy page to note personal problem areas, no health forms about past surgeries etc. This last comment is my personal perception and not a fact, but my gut told me that the Dr was very uncomfortable and possibly even offended by my anti-racist t-shirt. The t-shirt simply says: "Hi, Don't be racist, Thanks." I obviously can't make any definitively factual statements about this, but after clearly reading my shirt (which you can see takes about 2-3 seconds tops) he kept flicking his eyes from my shirt to my face and back to the shirt. It was definitely distracting to him and I felt made him uncomfortable. That's what I have to say about my 5 minutes in this office this morning as I simply wrote on the intake papers that the office was not for me as no one was wearing masks and left.

In addition, in the last couple of years I have been in a couple care accidents that have brought on significant back, neck and migraine issues. I am very "specific" about how I am adjusted. Dr. Vern is a chiropractic I trust and value his adjustments. Since Dr. Vern has to be very gentle with my neck at times and other times he can do a more firm adjustment I know he has the ability to cater to all spans of needs for children to older adults! I have been going for a couple of years now and appreciate his drop in hours, affordable prices, that he takes time for each person and will listen to what my body is needing (manual or activator adjustment etc) based on what I tell him, he is not one to push his thoughts, opinions or ways on a patient. I have been in to see him last minute for severe migraines and he takes the same amount of time with me as he does when I would arrive early or mid shift. The flat fee takes anxiety out of unexpected costs or a "sales pitch". The open room approach did take a little time to adjust (maybe 2 visits?) until I realized when its my turn to be adjusted he is focused on adjusting me and others in the room are doing their therapy or stretches and paying no attention to me. As I mentioned previously, not having to make an appointment is also a huge plus! New to chiropractic or have had a bad experience in the past? Relax, give Dr. Vern a chance, call him and make an appointment. Communicate to him your anxieties and pain and he can work with you to start feeling better! Oh and wiggle your fingers and toes as you get adjusted, it helps your body stay relaxed to allow for a better adjustment and less resistance! (that's me as a former Chiro tech talking now!) ;)
