Then lots of fried stuff: Arancini, Mozzarella, Fries, Crochette etc. And drinks (beer, water, soda). Prices of the pizze start as low as 3.50. Most cost tops 6 Euros. Only the seafood pizza costs more: 8 Euros. I ordered the "Vocione". A pizza topped with ham, mushrooms and salsicca (an italian sausage). Since it was busy it took a while. But it was well worth the wait. The Pizza dough is freshly made by hand and all pizze made right then before your eyes. Quality of the toppings were high. Good meat and mushrooms. I saw it occupying several adjacent openings between columns in a corner location in an indoor shopping mall named Centro Commerciale Il Delfino. It was close to lunch time. I asked a nearby merchant what they thought of it and got sort of a shrug. Yet I kept on looking at this place - Sarni Ristorazione - and saw a few packaged lunch specials and that there were decent prices attached to this "pranzo italiano." Sarni is also a company that has gas stations with attached food service in autostrada service areas. Here, I learned that they also have stand-alone restaurants in shopping centers and in neighborhoods. This one is such a location. I looked at the "pranzo di terra" combination, which means "lunch of the land," meaning that there's no fish, but meat or poultry. That said, the lunch deal is composed of a meat or poultry entree, a plate of pasta (that does not have fish), a side, a bread roll, and some base mineral water. First, the ladies who work at this Sarni are very helpful. After a few times of getting mostly the same things, they knew that my side of choice was the spinach and that they'd have to prep it a little. Along with that, I usually had a chicken breast, which they prepare and is very tender, along with a plate of pasta, of which there are various choices, one of which ought to satisfy a person. You pay at the end of the counter and then take a seat. With you comes the buzzer that tells you when meat or poultry items are ready. You sit in a well illuminated area and the tables are cleaned fairly regularly. If it sounds cafeteria style, it is. The Italians call this concept a "tavola calda," which literally means a "hot table." When I was a kid, I thought this was so funny. I thought that they were referring to the actual tables being hot. So I would then say, "La tavola calda, dove ti siedi e ti bruci il culo." That means, "the hot table, where you sit and burn your rump." I didn't get in trouble and I would periodically make this remark upon mention of a "tavola calda." My parents just gave me the look that I was being ridiculous. You've got a lot here at this Sarni Ristorazione in the shopping center. There's a variety of good food, portions are hearty, prices are fair, and the employees are reliably pleasant. It's far from fine dining, so the clientele is mostly local area folks. Note that if you come in later during the window of time for lunch, they may run out of the meat/poultry/fish or type of pasta you might have had your eye on.

It appears that there is another Margherita that is in the general area, but not quite in the city center. I rolled with my friend's recommendations because I am not that familiar with this region. With a name like Margherita, you would think it's primarily a pizzeria. They do make pizzas, but it is also a full-service Italian restaurant with a focus on regional cuisine, that being the cuisine of Abruzzo. It was very full that evening and what still continues to amaze me in Italy is that people routinely make reservations for everyday restaurants and pizzerias such as this one. In North America, one is accustomed to making them only for upscale restaurants. Cutting right to the main event, I opted for a plate of pasta based on a recommendation. It was mugnaia, and it is a popular regional pasta. With that, we ordered arrosticini, which is skewered meat apparently sourced from livestock in the Apennines, which are the spine of the region and separate it from Rome on the opposite side of the peninsula. Arrosticini seem to be Abruzzo's answer to Greek souvlaki skewers! Individual servings of the house tiramisu were also ordered. I have no doubt that this regional food was true to form and properly prepared. That said, I didn't really enjoy the doughy rope-like form of mugnaia and I found the arrosticini a little gamey. However, one must keep in mind that these are popular in this region and people are used to them. On Italy's island of Sardinia, the two principal types of of pasta - culurgiones and malloreddus - are very different from pasta on the mainland and a paradigm shift of sorts is needed. My friend liked the food. The service was definitely helpful and low key. The pricing appeared to be fair. Margherita is popular and most people seem to like it. It's possible that, based on my choices, I might not return because, in a secondary city such as this one, and considering its beach strands, there are many restaurants to sample. It seems that sticking to the more generic Italian pasta and entree staples at Margherita would have been more to my liking. However, if my friend who hails from this region gives it the thumbs up and the service and prices were on point, I should just be fair and give Margherita (in Centro) 4 stars.

While planning my trip to southern Italy, I discovered Trabocci and after reading about them knew…read morethat I had to track them down so that I could see them in real life and take photos. From Wikipedia: A trabucco is a massive construction built from wood, which consists of a platform anchored to the rock by large logs of pine of Aleppo, jutting out into the sea, from where two (or more) long arms called antennae stretch out suspended some feet above the water and supporting a huge, narrow-meshed, net (called trabocchetto). IN other words, its a type of pier that fishermen use to fish right off of the beaches along the Abruzzo coastline. What I found during my research was that some of these amazing structures actually have restaurants on them and I did some searching and found Trabocco Punta Cavallucio was one of these restaurants and I made a reservation. The experience was fantastic. It can be a bit tricky to find, but luckily I had noticed the sign while driving past on the way to our hotel earlier in the day. The Google Maps was sending us to the WRONG location! We arrived and it was in a dark area on the beach, but was lit up with little lights. We were the first to arrive (they eat so late in Italy!) at 8pm and the gate to the bridge was locked. I had a bit of a panic attack but then someone came out and opened the gate and we headed into the restaurant. We got to pick where we wanted to sit so chose a "window" seat, although the windows are covered with a plastic covering that makes it difficult to see out. I believe they can open these on clear warm nights and they also have outdoor seating, but this night was a rainy one. It works like this. Everyone arrives and gets seated and everyone is served together. If you're late, they will catch you up. For 50 Euros, you receive your beverage: wine or beer or both, and then the food starts coming out! There is no menu, you are served what is fresh that day. I have posted photos of the crazy stuff we ate that night! We spoke very little Italian and they spoke no English so there was just no way to even know what we were eating except for those few items we recognized, but we tasted everything and enjoyed the experience and everything tasted pretty good. The service was wonderful and friendly even though we had a language barrier. The restaurant was warm and cozy and clean. The restrooms were outside and back on land and while they were a pit style, they were clean and easy to use. This was a restaurant in which we were the only tourists. The people dining were locals or friends. It was casual, but still nice. They frowned when I asked about credit, so I just paid cash. They may take credit, but don't want to. This was just the kind of experience that is completely unique and we enjoyed every moment. It was one of the highlights of our vacation and I highly recommend this restaurant and experience to anyone who finds themselves in the San Vito Chietino.

They appear to be putting in a little kitchen in back and have shrunk but improved the main room (although the large painting of a rear end will be sorely missed.
