The hotel is well located tovisit the nearby Bircham Windmill, Houghton Hall, and the North Norfolk coast. The hotel was built as a pub in 1860, incorporating an earlier building, and modernised again more recently, so it has a contemporary rather than an historic vibe. The hotel reception is accessed from the rear car park, but there is a front entrance opening into the lounge/bar, with the restaurant along the side. There's a lovely patio outside, shaded by an Indian Bean Tree, and next to the car park is a garden with a children's play area. Our room was in the modern extension at the rear, and was very spacious, with a nice bathroom with shower/bath. The room was well equipped - a sofa, and 3 armchairs, desk, and a spacious wardrobe. A hairdryer and desk fan were provided (there's no air-conditioning in thew rooms, though is in the restaurant). The bed was super comfy, with lovely white bedlinen; the bathroom had some nice herbal shampoos and shower gels and lots of very fluffy towels. Everything was spotlessly clean, and room service were very obliging (it was very warm when I visit, and they happily took out the duvet from the duvet cover, so we had lighter bedding). We had breakfast in the restaurant every day, and two evening meals. Breakfast comprises a selection of teas and coffee, toast with preserves, cereals, yoghurt, and berries, and a variety of cooked items, from the full English (vegetarian option available) two scrambled egg with fresh salmon, and eggs Benedict. All the items are prepared to order, with waiter service (i.e. there's no buffet). We found the quantity quality very good indeed, and service was swift and friendly. The same was the case for the evening meals; we had two courses, with soft drinks, each time coming in at just over £30 a head (service excluded). On the Sunday, we had the Sunday Roast (one beef £23, one vegetarian £20), which came with a huge Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes - and a selection of eight vegetables! The menus normally have one or two vegetarian items, but the kitchen can be flexible if asked. The car park at the rear gets busy in the evening when diners join the hotel guests, but it is possible to park in the road. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and plan to return.

Despite the server gently steering me toward the Scotch egg, I went with the unfamiliar option. She was right -- while the pastry was fine, the filling was a bit cloying, and I didn't finish it. But then came redemption: the fish and chips. All four of us actually gasped when the plates arrived. I've never seen a portion like it -- a perfectly battered, beautifully fried fillet stretching well beyond the plate, served with a side of salt-and-vinegar "scraps," which were new to me and absolutely addictive. The curry sauce was outstanding. And I didn't have to worry about finishing it; everyone at the table was more than happy to jump in.

The starters were prepared to perfection (the haddock/prawn fish cakes were amazing). The steak for my main was cooked exactly as ordered (medium) and melted in the mouth, and the accompanying peppercorn sauce was delightful. For desert the sticky toffee pudding and ice cream was warm, moist and very sweet but not too sickly!! Perfect! I would highly recommend going here, I plan on coming back but will also bring my family and my fiancées family when they visit from London. Well deserved 5 stars.
