Coelho's ('rabbit' in Portuguese), from what I've been told, has been around at this same location…read morefor quite some time. In fact, the street it's on & its cross-street are both named for members of the Coelho family. "Great--but how was it?" HUGE disappointment.
The food: they offer a buffet lunch (charged by the weight) & they offer 'rodizio' (if you've ever eaten in a Brazilian steakhouse, it's where the servers come to your table offering cuts of various types of meats that have been cooked on skewers) plus buffet access for a fixed price.
We chose the second option so we could have a better idea about the quality of their offerings. We got here on a Friday at 1PM for lunch and the buffet looked like it had been picked over by locusts. Even though some guy in a chef's coat seemed to be overseeing the buffet, most hot dishes had been sitting long enough to have coagulated; gravies and sauces had skins on them (how hard would it be to at least stir the dishes?). The absolute worst was a carcass of a fish that only the head was left (maybe they thought someone would want to eat the fish eyes...). It was on the buffet from when we arrived until I took a photo of it--about 90 minutes later (see photo).
I've seen photos of their sushi on Google & TripAdvisor and it looked very nice. That was not my experience. There were 4 sad, lonely pieces of sushi that sat on the buffet from when we arrived until we left--never replenished and never removed.
The dessert on the other hand was delicious.
The service was mediocre. Our waiter was hard to find; he forgot our coffee. When the check came, he said we couldn't pay the tip on the credit card, but only in cash.
Maybe this place used to be good or maybe we caught them on a bad day. Maybe they think they can survive just on their reputation. If we ever happened to come back, it would just be for the dessert.
