The Parish of St. Paul church was an excellent alternative site for this service, the 107th consecutive one and the oldest such caroling service in the United States. The church is beautiful, and the acoustics are excellent. The choir is amazing, and the audience is invited to sing along with some of the carols, including ones in Latin. Toward the end of the evening the audience is asked to join in singing "O Silent Night" in either English or German, a nod to the famous impromptu "armistice" between German and Allied troops on the front lines at Christmas time during the first World War. There also were Biblical readings about the birth of Christ read by distinguished Harvard professors and clergy. Admission to the caroling service is free, but a collection is taken at the end of the service, and you are asked to contribute generously to a good local cause.

Many of the luminaries of American history sat in its pews. There is a feeling of history and dignity in every square inch of the church. True to its Unitarian tradition, they have dispensed with the Trinity, the Holy Ghost, the entire Nicean Creed and revealed truth. It is a true Humanistic ritual in the nature of Unitarian Universalist thought of the Founding Fathers. The sermons are packed with young worshippers and many stay afterwards to socialize and then head off to the many coffee houses in the area. Truly an outstanding place.

The past year that I have been in Boston has involved a lot of researching denominations and trying to understand them and the SBC certainly is a hard one to grapple with for many. But no matter how many times I've ventured elsewhere, I *always* come back to Hope Fellowship. Mostly, that is because I'm convinced that Hope Fellowship is led by godly, prayerful people and that the Spirit is bearing fruit here. Again, trust me, I get the doctrinal disputes and I struggle with the SBC on certain issues. At Hope, the leadership doesn't shy from hard topics but it also doesn't give black-and-white, pre-scripted answers; nor does it give wishy-washy, ungrounded ones. I've only ever seen Hope leadership tackle highly sensitive subjects in a nuanced, thoughtful, and humble way. Even if you don't agree 100%, you know you can share your perspective with leadership and be heard and loved. Furthermore, personally, I've found that this church has a refreshing way of incorporating confession and also rejoicing in God's mercy. During each service we have a call-and-response of a Psalm and then a prayer of confession and then a passage reminding us of how we have been redeemed from that sin. It's so balanced and thoughtful and, to me, really models what we see throughout Acts as people come to faith--a rhythm of repentance and joyfully accepting God's grace. If you are looking for a church that does not shy from tough questions and that will continually extend the love of Christ to you and motivate you to do the same for others, this place does that.

If you walk by the church everyday, try stopping in one Sunday morning at 11 or for the evening Jazz service. The music is top notch, across the board. You can hear an organ played by Peter Sykes, which was designed by one of the congregants. The choir is lovely, but I'm biased. There are two ministers, Mary and Dan. Both are kind, smart, articulate, funny, approachable, and definitely in this profession for the right reasons. The congregation tends toward the academically inclined - but welcomes all types, and you'll see all types represented. I've been attending this church for about a year and a half, and every single Sunday or other day I show up for something, I learn something new about God, myself, and some fascinating bit about one of my fellow parishioners. Seats were added at the sides so that you could view the stage facing or behind the performers. The sound quality was solid, the open space allowing for a clarity of sound to come through. We attended the 7am mass on Sunday while visiting Boston, and the mass was very quick, only lasting about 45min as none of the hymns were sung. During the pandemic, everyone maintained a social distance and wore their masks properly. In fact, we stayed for as long as we did because we were looking for any possible reason to stay. Yet, in spite of all the feedback we gave, we felt like our experiences (of discrimination) were minimized and brushed off repeatedly in the 'spirit of forgiveness.' Confronting leaders one-on-one proved even less effective; we were told to be more understanding of others' ignorance, to lower our expectations with regards to general church dynamics, and to also consider not "crying so much." We felt like the worst was assumed about us, in order that leaders could continue to believe the best about themselves. While we do not blame any leader individually, we do pray that the pastors and elders at Aletheia may remember daily how easy it is to be led astray by personal pain and brokenness, by pride and a knowledge that so easily puffs up; and to remember that every sheep in their congregation is a child of God to be respected and loved and listened to; that every person's voice matters.
