My nails were in really bad shape; weak, brittle, and peeling. I don't normally get my nails done, but due to their condition, felt I needed some help. So, based on a recommendation of a friend, I outreached to the salon and got an appointment with their nail tech, Justina. I didn't have to wait too long for an appointment; there was one available the next day. When I arrived, I was immediately greeted and offered a coffee or a tea while I waited for my appointment time. My appointment started on time. Justina was very attentive and knowledgeable. She did a fabulous job and my nails not only look great, but they feel stronger and no longer hurt. Price was on par for what I was quoted at other salons. I can't speak to any of their hair services, but based on my experience with Justina and how I well I was treated by staff when I walked in, I would definitely consider trying them in the future. I requested a haircut and was fortunate enough to get Kyle. I have a had a difficult journey with my hair due to hair loss from nursing two babies and really needed a change but felt a bit scared because not everyone knows how to deal with curly hair! Kyle was friendly, professional, and really took the time to discuss the haircut with me before hand so that I felt comfortable. He is also incredibly knowledgeable and I could tell he cares about doing a good job. Bonus- he's funny. I've got to say, this is the best haircut I've had in YEARS. I feel grateful to have found a stylist I trust. Brandon cut my 4 y/o's hair too. It was my first visit to Christiaan Salon, and I guarantee it will be my last. As an Asian person, I felt increasingly uncomfortable with the treatment from the employees. I also feel that they did not understand how to cut Asian hair, and I did not receive what I had asked for. I am a college student in Providence, and I haven't found a good place to get my haircut. I saw the reviews for the salon and had walked past it before thinking it was a higher end, pricier place I would like to try. It was fairly easy to make an appointment, but I do think it's a little strange that you have to give your credit card information in order to book one. That is the least of the problems. I arrived, and I did not have to wait long. I had Mallory as my stylist, and it was 1 hour of mostly silence. She said very little to me the entire time. I was asked if I was from Providence, what school I went to, and that was about it. I listened as another stylist chatted with their customer, but my haircut was completely silent. As for the haircut, I brought in a picture of what I wanted and explained I wanted layers in the back. The back has no layers and is very, very flat. As she asked me if I liked it while in the chair, I struggled to see what it looked like in the small mirror and felt obligated to say I liked it because of the weird atmosphere. There is no way to fix it anyway because she cut the back too short for any layers to be added. When I was paying for my haircut, there were two receptionists behind the desk as well as Mallory standing there. I felt kind of strange as they all watched me pay and was given a few coupons and other items. As I turned around, I heard a woman's voice say "Not coming back." Well, Mallory, I am certainly not coming back and you did not get a tip. As a person of color in a white dominated space, I felt stared at and unwelcome. I understand that Asian hair can be difficult to cut, and I should have specified choppy layers. I thought about starting conversation several times but did not feel comfortable to do so and that is not my job. At a salon in the proximity of such a diverse college, I was shocked to be treated as an other. Only a person of color can understand the strange, uncomfortable silence and gazes that comes with being a race other than white. Looking at the way the owner responds to the other reviews by calling them out, I was unsure of whether to post this, but I think it's important for anyone who is not white to know before going to this salon. read more

I don't get my hair cut often but when I do I only trust Sacha to do it. I have very thick hair and she is able to get it looking great in a reasonable amount of time. She has also managed to wrangle my mane into an updo on a few occasions (including my wedding) and I received numerous compliments for those looks. I went in for a facial and lash lift with Allyse. From the moment I stepped into the salon I felt welcomed and completely taken care of. While I filled out my guest questionnaire, Allyse let me sit in one of the massage chairs so I was totally content! I loved that. When I stepped into her room I was instantly relaxed. Allyse has set up a very peaceful atmosphere. The table(bed I wish I could take home with me) was heated and extremely comfortable. I also had my first facial ever. My facial was the best thing to ever happen to my face and I will without a doubt be going back for another. Following my facial I got a lash lift. I really want to like this place because it's only 5 minutes away but I am afraid I can't because I am super picky about my hair, the stylist and how I'm treated at a salon as a consumer. I know it sounds very princess-y but unlike restaurants who get second chances, I have limited tolerance towards bad haircuts. I have a similar experience with other yelpers below, the receptionist isn't the friendliest. I made an appointment on the phone and the receptionist made it sound like it was almost impossible to get my name on their books and that they chose me rather than I picked them. Seriously now, you are a hair salon. When I showed up for the appointment, the receptionist acted more superior than she was and treated me as belittling as possible (maybe because I was new there). For some odd reason, I quickly saw past that but I kept thinking to myself, do I have to talk to unfriendly people every time I call back for an appointment? mmm... I got assigned to a stylist and she did not listen to what I said. I don't like when stylists think they know what's best for you (ok sometimes they do) but my basic rule for a stylist is to listen to what I want for MY hair. She didn't listen so of course, surprise surprise, my hair was not trimmed and styled the way I wanted. I won't go back. It was not a pleasant experience from start to finish. If I could give it 3.5 I would. The pros is that I always find parking even though its in Providence and they always run on time for appointments. Also I have yet to have a bad haircut. Now I wouldnt say they are awesome, but for the price it is definitely worth it. The problem I had was that both receptionists were not very friendly. They both seemed like I was wasting their time and they had better things to do. She is a perfectionist who takes her time and ensures that you always look and feel your very best. Her gel manicures are second to none! This place went from being amazing to one of the worst experiences at a salon in just a few short months! All it took was me coming in to the place, not being acknowledged and when I was, have the receptionist roll her eyes at me, have the stylist be running late and then talk about me under her breathe to the receptionist, etc etc. I will NEVER return to this salon and will no longer recommend it unless I know someone who likes judging others and feels they are superior in one way or another. As a recent resident of Providence, I've had to find several news go-to places for different things: burgers, bars (still looking), books, beauty. Ha! I didn't mean to alliterate, but I did! Anyway, while I loved my salon in Boston, the rising prices and the length of time it would go there for a service just didn't make sense. When I realized Christiaan was just a short walk from my home AND in a purple building, I thought I'd try it out. My first appointment was with Sacha, who helped me get my brown hair back after a year of dying it different shades of red. She gave me a quick trim and really turned my hair into something I love. She was incredibly friendly and we had a nice chat about different things to do around Providence and all the private stuff you talk about with your stylist. I immediately booked my appointment and I am so excited to go back in a couple weeks to finalize my red-to-brown transition! In preparation for a job interview coming up, I made an appointment for a mani and pedi with Olga. Three words: I. Love. Olga. But first, the services. The pedicure was hands down the best pedicure I have ever had. You keep your feet in the spa water for 15 minutes and you are left to relax and enjoy. Then you get the usual treatment: trimming, filing, buffing, etc. I don't think anyone has ever spent so much time exfoliating and buffing my feet before. After another round in the tub and an aloe-wrap, it was time for the food and calf massage, followed by the painting. My toenails have never looked or felt this great before. The manicure was equally great. I have really small nails and I like to keep them short. Olga did a great job working with my short nails and they look beautiful. Olga may have also convinced me to quit my nail biting. I know, it's gross and you shouldn't do it because it's bad for your nails and teeth and the skin around the nails. But Olga told me the worst part about biting are the germs beneath your nails. Ew! I never though about that! She said you don't even want to know what can live underneath your nails, and I think she may have officially made me kick my habit. Beautiful nails and a break through! She's a miracle worker! I also just had a really great conversation with Olga, and I'm absolutely going to rebook an appointment if only to have a few minutes to talk again. She's adorable and so sweet! In short, you really have to try Christiaan Salon. I have every intention of trying all the services they provide, and when I do, I will be sure to come back and update this review with five stars :) read more

First time visiting this wonderful salon ! They've been in business for 35 years, and the free parking is the best. I had the most fabulous facial with Ashley. The solutions used for my "anti aging " treatments smelled and felt incredible. Then she massaged my shoulders, neck and arms-I was so comfortable I fell asleep! I do not recommend this salon to anyone who gets hair colored....inexperienced stylist, unprofessional and no customer service or satisfaction exists here! If you are unhappy with your services, the salon/stylists don't back up the service. I'm New to area and had my hair colored. I brought in pictures to show what i typically get and look lke to make easy for stylist. I was very unhappy with color and stylist was very unsure of herself with coloring. I understand coloring can be tricky so I tipped stylist but wanted to make appointment to lighten up as it was way, way, way darker than pictures I showed stylist. TWO WEEKS later I received a message from stylist leaving a casual message to call her back. No apology, no sense of urgency and definitely not a sense of pride. I left a very nice tip to ensure I could get the incredibly dark color( 4 times darker than I requested) and unbecoming color , corrected asap and this is what I got!!! I was so irritated at the complacency and the feeling I've been blown off! Ladies, unless you are sure with what this salon provides to you, beware.....they will NOT stand behind making sure you are happy with what you pay for. Stay away!!! read more

I love that my coming to Christiaan to see Amanda and get my hair colored! I bring my laptop and use the salon's complimentary free wifi so that I can get some work done while Amanda works on keeping my locks shiny and golden! I'm pretty much a frazzled mess most days but my time at Christiaan is always relaxing, indulgent, and productive! The upstairs is set-up so there is a communal table with loads of magazines to help pass the time if you're not a workaholic like myself. It is really a great salon atmosphere with soft music going, ladies gabbing and discussing the latest in Providence. They also have a coffee or tea available which I think is a very nice touch and Amanda keeps me caffeinated through out the process. She is always helpful with styling tips and product information, too, but not in that pushy way that some salons I have experienced. Having moved a lot finding a salon that you enjoy and a colorist you can trust can be trying- I'm so happy to have found Amanda and Christiaan Salon! read more

Typically I am very uncomfortable going outside of my comfort zone, but in the spirit of trying something new I decided to get a lash lift. The salon and its parking were easy to find. Upon arrival I found that the salon was very clean and staff were very welcoming. Immediately putting my reservations at ease. Christiaan's is one of many reasons I miss being in Providence! It's just so hard to come by a salon that does such an excellent job with cutting and styling short hair -- specifically, Melissa! I'm never comfortable getting chatty when I go to get my hair cut, but Melissa always polite, charming, and respectful and never made me feel obligated to talk, besides asking me specific questions about how I wanted my hair cut. I noticed some of the reviews talks about bad receptionist experiences -- there was one time the receptionist scheduled me on a day that the salon was closed, but I have had no other problems beside that one instance. Granted, I lived within walking distance! Price wise -- around $40 for a women's short hair cut (with tip). For a college student, it burned a a slight hole in my pocket, but well worth it for a haircut of that high quality! read more

My stylist knows what she is doing and really engages me througout. Whenever I get my hair done, I always use my friends and family as my judging panel and they have loved the past two cuts that I have had. I'm sure this salon must do something right, however, DO NOT get HAIR EXTENSIONS done here. They use a system called So.Cap which is totally overrated and from what I have now learned is for beginners. THe hair is supposed to be top notch (I've seen better...it's all marketing). ALthough they take a training class from So.Cap it does not mean they are hair extension specialists. Actually, if you research it a little further, you will know that you should steer away from any salon that uses it as it is basically an advertisment that they don't know what they are doing. $1200 down the drain. Ugh. I feel tricked. I was told that I had the perfect hair for them and bla bla bla. I told the stylist that I saved up for a year to get them and it is expensive and that I wanted to make sure it was blended and would not look like extensions. My extensions from Christiaan looked like hair extensions. They did not blend them and looked trashy. I've actually done extensive research and have discovered other clients of Christiaan with awful looking extensions too (some think they look good but are just tricking themselves since they spent so much $). If you are going to get extensions, DO NOT go to the amatures at Christiaan. read more

I used to come to Christiaan Salon a lot, but have recently not been a customer. Christiaan Salon has some great hairdressers. I've never come in with a picture or idea of what I want my hair to look like, but I always leave really happy with my hair and impressed with my hairdresser. I've had haircuts from at least five of the hairdressers, and I'm confident that all of them are great. Another great perk to this salon is its location. Benefit Street is one of the most scenic streets in Providence, and the building is adorable and well-maintained. However, I won't be back for a few reasons. First off, the esthetician uses soft wax. Soft wax is fine for eyebrows, but for the bikini line, some women (including myself) prefer hard wax. My second reason for not returning is a sentiment shared by another reviewer: the attitude of the receptionist and other employees who hang out at the front desk. I got my hair cut and colored here about two months ago. And although I loved the outcome of my hair...I have never had such horrible customer service. I came in about 10 minutes late for the appt and I understand that it is unacceptable to come late to an appointment, but the girl was so unbelievably rude to me when I got there that I almost just walked out, but I love my hair too much I couldn't wait to get it done. I immediately started apologizing when I came in for being a few minutes late and the girl did not even crack a smile and said "well since your almost 10 minutes late we usually don't take clients, but I guess I can see what we can do with the remaining time". Well my hair appt took two and a half hours so I don't really see how those 10 minutes made such an inconvenience. Also I told the girl that I wanted at least 3 inches off with short layers and angles. The girl told me she would take some length off of my hair quick then start coloring my hair. So she trimmed it really quick and it was not what I wanted at all so I thought she was going to continue to cut my hair after the color. Two hours later my hair is colored and they start blow drying my hair. There was a different girl who was coloring my hair (who was actually really sweet I wish I could remember her name) so I asked her if the other girl was going to come back and cut my hair. She replied that she already did, so I was alittle confused considering she did not cut it how I said I wanted it. The girl did come back up and finish cutting my hair, but she was very rude about it the whole time. In the end I was very happy with my haircut and color, aside from the horrible customer service. My hair was a dark brown with a purple tint and I absolutely loved the color. Although, I paid almost $200 for that appt so I assumed that the color would stay for at least a week. I waited three days to wash my hair, and when I did all the purple washed right out leaving my hair just a dark brown (which is my natural hair color). So I basically feel like I paid $200 just for a haircut. I stupidly made another appt when I was leaving. I paid with my credit card and gave them my phone number to remind me about the appt in two months. Well they called my mothers phone (I don't even know how they got that number) and left a message about MY appointment. My mom was in Arizona for the week so I didn't get the message until she came back the day before the appt. As soon as I found out about it, I immediately called and canceled because I had work that morning. Well I woke up the next day with a message on my answering machine saying that since I canceled the day before they are going ahead and charging $55 to my credit card for the color. I called back right away and was very nice at first and asked them if they could please not charge the $55 dollars considering I canceled the appt. The lady on the phone was so rude (I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same who cut my hair) I actually got into a fight with this girl over the phone. She refused to not charge me for the hair color that they didn't even put in my hair. They already have my credit card number so there's nothing I can do about it unless I cancel my credit card. I explained to the girl how they didn't even call my number and that they called my mother who was out of state so I didn't get the message. She replied that it wasn't her problem because it was my responsibility to remember a hair appt that was two months away. Well I clearly remember giving them my phone number and asking them to call and remind me before the appt. Well they lost my number and they did not contact me so according to them that gives them permission to basically steal 55 dollars from me. Also, when I made the appt I was not aware whatsoever that there would be a cancelation fee of 55 dollars. The cancelation fee for a doctors visit doesn't even come close to $55 so I think that the cancelation fee is way over priced and just completely ridiculous. I had to hang up on the girl because she was being so rude!! Worst customer service I have ever had, I highly recommend you don't go to this place unless you want to throw down hundreds of dollars for hair color that won't even last a week. read more

Pretty solid service. I called in the morning and got a 5:30pm appointment. They wanted a credit card number to hold the appointment which I found rather strange. I mean, I understand that cancellations are bad but it seems very disconcerting to a new customer... Anyway, I was a little early to my appointment and was offered some coffee while I waited. I agree with other reviews that the receptionists could be a little more welcoming. The one working when i went seemed a bit aloof and bored. Sasha, my stylist, took me right on time and I got my wash and cut upstairs in the main hair area. Sasha was nice and did a good job with my cut, snipping and razor cutting with speed and skill. Her layering works perfect with my thin hair and I was happy to see my cut come out looking sophisticated but still young. I've been a regular at Christiaan's since 1996 and this is without a doubt the most professional, yet friendly and fun, salon in the area. The staff and owners (Bill and Sherri) are the nicest people and they never make you never feel as if you have to "look fabulous" when you go in for an appointment - but you'll certainly look great when they're done with you! I've been to Christiaan's for routine hair cuts, color/highlights, manicures, pedicures, and eyebrow waxing and I've never had a bad visit.
