The first would be that I think it is a bit misunderstood. While I didn't always like it, (what High Schooler really loves being in school?), St. Joe's was a special place. As I have gotten older, I have grown to appreciate that more and more. In the years since leaving its halls, at this point, nearing 15 years since I graduated, I have run into a great many other alum and it has a very family feel. My class was stacked at 54 students, the largest in years at the time, so for those of us who make it through St. Joe, we do become family, it was more than just a number. The best part of St. Joseph, believe it or not, are the teachers. As you grow older, you realize that those people were really caring and did have a love because teachers in general are underpaid, especially teachers in small Catholic schools. Anyhow, I recommend this spot. There will be those who hate any school you send them to but at least you will know your kids are among a special group.

My older daughter entered St. Joseph academically at or above grade level. While there, she fell significantly behind, particularly in math, while her teacher consistently blamed her. After transferring to public school, she caught back up remarkably quickly with proper instruction and support. We also had serious concerns about the way one of her teachers treated her, including inappropriate comments and interactions. When we brought those concerns to the administration, we felt the focus became defending the teacher rather than seriously addressing what our daughter had experienced. Two days after we escalated our concerns to the Diocese, our daughter was the only child in her class not given lunch, and we were never notified. I cannot say whether the timing was intentional, but given everything happening at the time, it was deeply concerning. That was her last day. We withdrew our younger daughter as well. During a field trip, a teacher transported her in a personal vehicle. Despite being of an age and size requiring a child restraint, she was placed in the front passenger seat without one. That raised serious concerns for us about basic student safety and oversight. Parents should also understand that St. Joseph does not require its teachers to hold Hawaiʻi state teacher licenses. Going above the administration accomplished virtually nothing. Despite being informed of our complaints and concerns, the parish and school pastor never responded to us. Not once. Zero response. We found no meaningful accountability from the Diocese either. Our experience was academic decline, serious concerns about a teacher's treatment of our child, questionable student-safety practices, and a lack of accountability from the school, Diocese, and parish leadership. Both of our daughters are now out of St. Joseph. Our only regret is that we didn't withdraw them sooner.

He was always available for confession and warmly greeted everyone with a smile before each Mass. St. Joseph did a good job at greeting guests visiting Hawaii before mass. However, as a young adult, I struggled with loneliness and finding a sense of community here--especially because there was only another person who was around my age, and he only attended my mass twice. St. Joseph has done some work to host "Epic Nights" to attract a community of young adults, and I commend the counselors who run it weekly. I didn't know St. Joseph had this until a few weeks before I left, so I wish I could've attended again.

The calendar constantly changes and they did not really care to check anyone's ID during pick up for safety of the kids in the first week. My child left with a bad taste and it ruined her first day of kindergarten during her real school year. She thankfully came to realize that it was only Haili Christian summer school that's a little wonky. No wonder it was a little cheaper than other summer school places.

This was not what I expected to hear coming from the pulpit of a UCC church. As I left, I told him I disagreed, and that I knew in my heart Jesus would have been celebrating the decision. Kahu Brian, your words are important. Your words are not going to change someone's sexual orientation... this is how God created them. But your words can drive the LGBT kids in your school to feelings of alienation, desperation, running away, running off-island, and even suicide. Some studies estimate gay and lesbian kids are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual kids http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_among_LGBT_youth. If you have several hundred kids attending your summer program, statistically speaking you have several dozen LGBT kids in the program whether you know it or not.... do you really want them to be hearing the message that they are not welcome in your church? Also, Kahu Brian, it seems quite likely to me that you have at least one LGBT person leading your worship service... maybe they are not openly LGBT... but how do you think they feel when they hear your words? Do you really think Jesus would not love them just as they are? That Jesus would not be willing to celebrate and affirm their loving, comitted relationships through marriage? Jesus never said a word against gays. He was however willing to break the rules of the old testament to bring justice and healing (Luke 13:10-17) and rightly called out those who chastised him hypocrites for picking and choosing which old testament rules they would keep or break, when the need for healing was obvious. He also said "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." (John 10:16). I know calmly and fully in my heart that Jesus would have (did!) welcome lgbt people to his church. We too are his other sheep. Yet do many of today's Christian churches never connect the dots between their staunch upholding of last century's proudly ignorant and discriminatory viewpoints and their declining memberships today. I attended Keaau High from 02 to 06 and felt accomplished upon graduating. Over time, however, my…read moresense of accomplishment eventually turned into relief upon reflection. Keaau High, from my experience, was mediocre at best school and horrible at worst. Many students were out of control with their behavior, and I bore witness to many fist fights (I was thankfully never part of one). I found the disciplinary plan to be laughable since they practiced in-school suspension in which the school forced offenders into isolation on campus. Whatever happened to writing on the blackboard for an hour or two after school sessions? Many teachers were either too strict or lenient with their course plans, consequently marring students' academic potential. Few teachers cared about the students, a couple whom I still contact. But most were there for a paycheck, which breaks my heart. Following my high school days, I struggled a lot in college. I partially blame my high school for how they failed to adequately prepare students for college. Ironic, considering that they talked a lot about the importance of college but failed to teach us what to expect. I wish I could think of more positive things to say about my old high school, but nostalgia aside, I'm thankful I never have to go to this high school again. If I had children, I would do everything in my power to keep them from attending this joke of a high school!
