We learned that Christ came here not to condemn but to be merciful. We learned that none of us are perfect , and it is by mercy and grace that we are saved. Sermons preached at Rise come from the Word of God, and not someone else's opinion of what they think it means to be a Christian. We have learned so much and we are grateful to have a church here in Abilene that is truly concerned about others. We have seen so many lives changed through this church and highly recommend it.

Mark Hewitt has made it his pluriennal mission in life to gain both trust and respect of the homeless in the Abilene/Midland area. His Ministries have started with a crazy idea of helping the homeless with free food/clothing/health care/job hunting/moral and spiritual support. And it is now one of the most flourishing ministries in the area. Completely run on a voluntary basis, it offers 1 comforting and flavourful meal per day to those in need. It allows 15 minutes per week into their free thrift store, filled to capacity with great clothes and shoes for all shapes/sizes/ages and sex. It allows those who are not covered by a health insurance to access prime care for free, be it a dental need, a routine Dr. appointment, a mammography, an optometrist check-up... All funded by the good heart of the common citizen and his/her need to do as the Lord say "help those in need, for they shall help you gain the greatest richness upon earth". I only wish there were more ministries as loving and caring as this and less elitarian ones across the globe.

I have noticed a lot of churches share the words but miss on the works and the follow through of…read morethose words. In visiting three Sundays, attending a bible study as well as a third event, I believe The River of Life Church to be true to their words. This is a place that is as inviting for the 99 as it is for the 1. This is a place where the hellos and greetings are genuine and not just the "get them at the door" hello and then go cold. This is also the first church I experienced in Abilene where I was invited to connect immediately with other members as well as having a great conversation with Pastor David Skinner... who, texted himself. I was not shoved in to some AI database and did not feel like a number instead of being seen as a person. The services feel as engaging to someone new to faith as they are for some one who has that cup runneth over faith. While, I have tried a number of churches in Abilene and of course, not all of them; I have found The River of Life Church to be true to the word, true to the Gospel and an authentic, engaging and connecting church unlike anything else Ive experienced in the area.

When I first started coming I was immediately welcomed with open arms and felt at home. Through these last 10 years that hasn't changed. No matter who you are or where you come from you are welcomed with open arms. I recently left for a few months to just explore and get a feel for other churches. And as great as they all were nothing came close to comparing to The River! So I found myself coming back home. The children's, youth, and adult ministries are all great and I would encourage anyone to get plugged in and become a part of one or all of these ministries. Our family lives out of state and we were desperately in need of a priest to administer Last Rights…read moreto our son (39 yrs old) who was given one to two days to live while in Abilene. The hospital gave our family a list of four Catholic churches to contact. Of the four churches that we left urgent messages to (on a Sunday, the busiest of days) only Father Albert returned our call and met with us at the hospital and gave the "Special Power Prayer" on that Sunday! Father Albert told us that God told him that he was to meet a "Good Guy". Of course, being family we said, yes, our son is a "Good Guy". Then Father Albert says, "No, you don't understand, God told me that your son is a "Good Guy" and that I had to meet him". Father Albert explained he has never used his cell phone to call the office directly to check messages. Never on a Sunday, the busiest day of the week. Father Albert knew this was God's hand reaching out to him to administer the "Last Rights" to the "Good Guy". The prayers and passing service Father Albert gave to our son was beautiful, calming and if I can say Father Albert, was a delight. Our son went to hospice the next day and passed a week later.
