We were unsure at first whether to pay admission to see "The Treasure," but we had no regrets! Many years ago, I had the privilege of seeing exhibits from the Vatican at the art institute in Chicago. The treasures found here at this museum rivaled those I saw from the Vatican. What a privilege to see these amazing works of religious art!!! The ticket we purchased also allowed us to be admitted to the archeological museum, which was also outstanding.

I came here for a wedding reception, and this was a quaint and romantic venue. There's even a small…read moremoat around the castle and a bridge crossing it. The courtyard was made of cobblestone and the green meadow in the background made for a very picturesque scene. One of the large rooms was reserved for dinner and dancing. The room was a pretty decent size holding at least 15 large round tables. There were convenient restrooms and a makeshift coat room. There were actually two wedding receptions happening on the same night, so it's good to know they can accommodate multiple parties. They had a good sound system as the music was blasting! There was also a relatively large parking lot with free parking! They conduct tours (with or without guides) until 5:30pm, but the ticket office closes at 4:30pm. Unfortunately, we arrived after the ticket office had closed. The castle looks like it would be interesting inside, and it would be a quick stopover on the way to somewhere else. It was wonderful because there was only a few people there and you can basically wander around the castle wherever you want with a book to kind of guide you. There were a couple cool audio rooms that explained more about the castle and lots of fun and games for kids. The castle is very well preserved and I can imagine being even more beautiful in the spring or summer with the mote around it. I had a great stroll around.

A lot of the explanation is in Dutch text, so ask for the English language booklet. You are led through the old building going through the making, bottling and marketing processes as well as the political factors determining where jenever was made and consumed. You finish by tasting one of the products made in the museum's own distillery.

Where else but Belgium would you find a museum dedicated to gin?…read more Genever has been a national drink for centuries and is still going strong in the country that also boasts the best beers in the world. Genever is distilled like gin but you can get different variations of it too, which you can do at the end of the tour when you get to taste the different types of delicious alcohol. The tour of the museum is unguided, so you can take your time looking and learning about how the stuff is made, from grain to bottle, seeing the equipment that is used and also, my favorite, the way that it was advertised over the years. I'm a sucker for old posters and advertisements. It only costs 4.50 Euro for the tour and that includes the free drink at the end. I actually had more than one drink but hey, the stuff is good! So if you're in the Hasselt area, or if you're not get over there and, stop by. Belgium really is more than beer and chocolate!

It was an interesting insite into the houses of the time and how people lived in them. The details in the rooms are beautiful and on a whole was relativly educational on how people in germany lived in the upper classes in the 1800s. The downside of the museum though is that the staff potentially ruin the experience. The cashier was less than friendly to me and my german speaking companion and made us both feel like we were inconveniencing him for having to part with our Euros, and then when he explained we needed to leave our bags and coats with him (which was no problem with us) he again made us feel like we had objected to this, so was angry from the start. It was only that his collegue was friendly and hospitable that we decided to continue and enter the museum. Then one of the volunteers, although well meaning followed us through the whole museum. It was good that there was someone there to answer our questions, but as we were the only people in the museum at the time i think we got a bit too much attentionperhaps it would have been a better place to visit when there were more people there.
