The people here were extremely nice and welcoming. They showed me how to go up to light incense and raise it up before placing it on the alter. They had live music and many table of food. The Chua Dai Bi temple, which is located next to a church in a residential area, is gorgeous on the…read moreinside and outside. It has a team of volunteers cleaning and decorating the temple, which seems to be new, and a couple of monks living on site. Everyone is very generous and kind with the utmost patience and passion, especially when teaching Buddha's lessons and praying. There is the rule of removing your shoes upon entering the temple as well as respectful behavior (no shouting or running, and appropriate attire only), both of which are common courtesies. Also, the monks can speak English, so to all of the curious non-Vietnamese speakers, please feel free to explore the temple and religion.

This is a Chinese Pure Land temple. Their main practice is reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha…read more(the Buddha of Infinite Light and Eternal Life) and taking refuge in him in order to enter the Western Pure Land at death, a place of liberation and eventual full realization of our Buddha Nature. The building is a converted office building. They have a spacious recitation hall on the second floor. The first floor has a library, bookstore, and dining room. If you go on a Sunday morning, don't expect to be a casual observer. They'll give you a black robe, lead you to a meditation cushion, and expect you to participate in the chanting. You'll probably be the only non-Chinese, but everyone is very nice and friendly, very helpful, and very devout!. They'll even feed you lunch (vegetarian food) for free. They don't ask for donations and offer you books and CD's in addition. It was a cool and refreshing experience. The prostrations (full bows) were the hardest part--kept tripping on the robe! It helps to know something about this form of Buddhism, but it's not a requirement. You'll learn by doing!

After the lesson, a vegetarian lunch is provided free of charge (which was very good). While eating lunch, you have an opportunity to mingle with others who visit the temple. I found everyone to be very pleasant and open to answ ering any questions that I had. In addition to the temple, there is also a very nicely stocked library which is divided into two sections. The one section offers a variety of books, CD's, DVD's, and other print material to anyone who wishes to learn free of charge. The other section provides a variety of material that can be checked out and then returned. Donations are accepted, but they are not required (they are tax deductible if made however). No one at the temple solicited anything from me besides my willingness to learn and to participate in the discussions and other activities. Overall I was very happy with my experience at the temple, the people, and I plan on returning next weekend. I would definitely recommend this temple to anyone who wishes to learn about Buddhism.

All plates, cutlery & cups are disposable. This week is Chinese New Year of the pig and it was festively decorated everywhere. SERVICE: Self-serve for the most part. TIPS: Get there early, at 11:30 to get the freshest and hottest dishes. Also, it starts crowding in at 12 & after. Last, bring your own glass /cup in as they only have little 4 oz cups for water or hot tea.
